The best Linux distribution for gaming in 2025
4 Dec 2024 at 10:14 am UTC Likes: 3

Just because this thread is not nearly long enough... :D
I used Manjaro KDE for about two years. It was mostly good, but dependencies trouble and such made me move again. I like KDE, but some things never really worked on that Lenovo Legion of mine. So, now back again to Linux Mint. I can absolutely confirm that gaming, even FPS do work fine for me. Wayland seems to be trouble with my AMD/nVidia-Combo on every platform. At the end, its not important on which OS i get my back kicked in Valheim again.

As i just learned this from user TherinS, there ist the fantastic input-remapper [External Link] out there, and this can be really gamechanging. You can do timed macros and keypress conditions with that, and you can switch between special sets of them. This could be handy for those who are struggling with the lack of buttons.

Quoting: TherinSIn case you are looking for a way to rebind keys on your Razer (or any) devices, I would like to again suggest "input-remapper".[...]
Awesome, thank you! I've been looking for something like that for a long time!
I love this forum. :)

Steam Game Recording has officially launched

Quoting: TharvasI hope we soon can choose audio inputs natively as with built in forced microphone recording it is rather annoying. it is fine for now as I mainly use it to record bugs or cheaters to send proof where sound is not needed but I don't think Valve intended this to be it's primary function.
Hmm, you could choose to record your microphone in one of the last betas. There was a checkbox toggle switch for it!
Was i missed was the option not to record default output. Example: whem i play with friends and have mumble (a voice chat client) in the background, they get recorded too.

Manjaro Linux want your system info with their new data collection tool

I was quite some time on Manjaro and had a good time with it, but the problems with their own repositories drove me to EndeavourOs (feels really good( for toying around and Mint as daily drivers (perfect for kids family). If i had not made the switch already, this would have triggered it. If it would have been opt-in, i absolutely would have enabled it.

Steam Deck SteamOS 3.6.20 Beta has an updater fix and Metaphor: ReFantazio performance improvements

On the topic of game recording: i still did not find a way to record game-only audio. I can choose to include my microphone, but the voicechat (mumble) in the background get recorded, too. Currently i am running Linux Mint on Pipewire, but i cannot seem to find a way to isolate the different sources. Other than that, i really love this feature.

Quoting: Purple Library GuyWhen I think Spy vs Spy I think Mad magazine . . . there was a game?
Yes, it was based on the comic from the Mad Magazine. Even the gameplay was a little bit off, so they did it quite well. :)

Get your own UFO in the latest No Man's Sky update during a really weird Expedition

Ah, No Mans Sky. I really like what the devs did here, the game looks absolutely awesome, and there is tons of content. But no matter how often i retry it, after a few hours i feel the grind, and my motivation is lacking somehow.
Elite, its biggest competition (in my opinion), is way less dense in content and grindy as hell, but for me, it feels a bit more rewarding and... real. I wonder what Hello Games had to do in order to get me hooked for longer.

Subnautica 2 arrives in Early Access in 2025 with 4 player co-op

Wow, this is great. I really loved the original Subnautica. The first night underwater, the things glowing in the reefs, and the soundtrack of Simon Chylinski kicked in... that was awesome.
Basebuilding with friends? Hell yeah.

Survival game Valheim adds a new feast mechanic and The Bog Witch in testing

Quoting: ShabbyXHow can I survive the wait? Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah
Welcome to my world, been through that since the first release! :)
These changes are really appreciated. I always disliked that farming and cooking were no skills, because i tended to our player base a lot (valheim can be such great comedy with friends). I hope they make fishing a lot more relevant to the gameplay, because fishing in this game is one of the best implementations i have ever played. If you are really hooked, there is some cool "valheim lore explained" videos out there, they made me re-read the Edda even.
