I probably won't be tempted to get a laptop upgrade until the second generation of thunderbolt 5 controllers are released. Second generation because adopters of the first generation are basically beta testers.

I probably won't use snaps for the foreseeable future because they don't support symlinks. Using a setup where your home directory passwd entry is a symlink shouldn't be a controversial configuration but it's not supported by snaps and breaks them. You can use bind mounts as a workaround but that's not as elegant as a symlink and flatpak has no problem with symlinks.

Oh that brings back memories; I played Putt-putt, Freddi fish, and spy fox as a kid in the 90's. Spy fox was probably my favorite.

I wonder when we'll start seeing linux preloaded on the more mainstream budget conscious models of laptops. With how much tech has advanced the vast majority of users are comfortable with laptops in the sub $500 range and it'd be neat if you could pick up one of these already low cost models and then save an extra little bit on sticker by opting for a linux distro pre-installed. Although to be honest I imagine OEM's probably only pay $10-20, or less, per install so it'd be a really insignificant savings for users.
If you can't login to World of Warcraft or WoW Classic on Linux, here's a quick fix for now

Quoting: lejimsterI played for two or three years myself and I still consider Burning Crusade to have been the best game experience I've ever had. Unfortunately I have an extreme habit-forming personality and so I avoid MMORPG's because I'm still at a point in my life where I need to be proactive with other things.Quoting: PieOrCakeI played WoW for over a decade, but thankfully managed to kick the habit before the BfA xpac was released. I've been WoW-free for a couple of years now, and holding steady!I played it for a 2 week trial thingy years ago and I barely left my room during that time. When the trial expired I decided against buying it for my health lol.
Valve are asking for help testing "ACO", a new Mesa shader compiler for AMD graphics

I get the feeling this is an instance of Valve closing a gap between the open source AMD drivers and Nvidia's proprietary drivers that has existed from the start and not them using some novel new method that surpasses Nividia's implementation.

Quoting: gradyvuckovicThis is fantastic! This is really just cutting straight to the heart of gaming issues on Linux, tackling the real hard problems like improving minimal frame rates and eliminating stutter. This will have such a positive impact on gaming performance under Linux. Of course, it's just for AMD GPUs. NVIDIA, getting the hint yet? Open source your drivers if you want some of the open source love!I can agree that it's good to involve the community and prefer things to be open source but in this particular instance would Nvidia really benefit from implementing the idea behind this mesa shader branch? Valve got these good results because they had been using LLVM as their compiler and, like their post says since it's a general purpose compiler and overall affected by commits from people with other use cases, it didn't make sense to keep using it. But Nvidia's proprietary driver very likely doesn't incorporate LLVM and has probably had a gaming specialized shader compiler from the start.

Is unigine used for anything other than their benchmarks these days? Last I recall it was pretty rare to see a game, let alone a AAA game, running with it.

As a kid I remember playing Putt Putt saves the zoo, Spy Fox in Dry Cereal, and Freddie Fish. Were a lot of fun as a kid and at like age 7 or 8 did occasionally stimulate thinking.
CodeWeavers on how Proton (Steam Play) helped improve Wine 4.2

Quoting: GuestThis is a success story of OSS. Steam, Wine and Proton made Linux a viable gaming OS - and that's something to behold, thanks to Valve, Codeweavers and the hard-working linux community! It's really my own personal hell as I made the decision last month to uninstall Elder Scrolls Online. Game works beautifully on Wine with DXVK but I'm not a person who can actively play games and work on adding beneficial habits/studying to my lifestyle. Just not at a point in my life where I can truly enjoy the now flourishing linux gaming scene :'(
