Microsoft wants to buy Valve... Probably a "courteous call" to gauge the interest and possibility, only. "The worst that may happen is a -No!" and it's probably what happened. Still, they made "the call" and are free to spread the FUD. Pure Microsoft strategy.

Still, it's logical for Microsoft to try... Imagine if Gaben was "foolish" enough to acccept... It would permit them to make Steam incompatible with Win7 & Win8, upgrade it so it gets locked to UWP and then start to dissolve it, over time, into the uwp. As a bonus, they put their filty hands on Valve's games ips and do wathever they will with it. It would be a glorious win on all boards, for Microsoft!

Edit: At least, Valve and "Lord Gaben" are now aware that Microsoft is looking to "up their game" and that the statu-quo is about to change. They should get ready accordingly.

Personnally, I don't really care but I understand Chepati's point of view. It's true that many purchases could get postponed for the official Linux release if us, dualbooting gamers, knew earlier that the game was coming.

I guess the opposite would be valid as well, lots of people would then buy the Windows version before Linux release date as soon as it is somehow on sale..

Maybe too... But at least there is GamingOnLinux to warn them not to do that. :)

The most effective thing Microsoft as ever done is to buy competition to make it disappear. It's probably something along this line that's about to happen, if ever the rumour reveals to be true. Which I highly doubt. Else, everything they touch, they destroy.

P.S. Maybe Microsoft wants Valve to be a game publisher again and make HL3 for Xbox one as an exclusive. Samsai, that one is for you. ;)

Me neither; though one thing to keep in mind is that without almost complete feature & performance parity with windoze, Linux-only sales would end up generating quite a bit of resentment. Nowadays, Windows licences are nowhere as expensive as they used to be; if you're a student (at least in the US), they push the damn thing on you for free anyhow (that's how I got my several perpetual [not tied to student status; valid after graduation] licenses); and people getting their windoze pcs pre-built don't even realize that they're paying for the OEM license -- that being the case, being platform-locked *on the same hardware* that could run *the same game* better at little to no extra cost would be perceived as a pretty unfair deal, by someone who isn't already a Linux user/supporter for gaming-independent reasons.

Yep! That's why I wrote IF. Sometimes, consequences are hard to predict.

But one can't say that we don't want to. Though I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't buy a Witcher 3 port, just out of boycott.

Got no problem with that, your motives are your own, but when compared to all the games I played exclusively on Linux/SteamOS, since 2012, The Witcher 3 is the best game I ever played, by far. Just sad that I had to reinstall a Win7 drive to play it. Thing is, after having played my preferred games a couple of times each, and since I'm using my computer mainly for gaming, my rig was beginning to collect dust, at this point. I really like Shadow of Mordor, Mad Max, Deus Ex Mankind Divided, The Metros and Bioshock Infinite but at some point, it's not enough anymore.

ID Software moved away from Linux a while ago. I don't think their interest in Linux is any greater than Bethesda's itself, these days. And Beth's reluctance to release their games on our platform is of a borderline religious nature. Some of their games run pretty well in WINE and probably could be ported with minimal effort, but I think Beth needs a new CEO before they will consider it.

Safer bet lies in Codemasters, 2K Games, Sega, Square Enix and (maybe) Warner Bros. Did I forget other AAA studios? The fact that WB didn't release Shadow of War on Linux and never mentionned it makes me doubt about their futur intentions. Even if Before the Storm seems rock solid, could it be?
