The problem is that game development on Linux is a work in progress and Valve has given it a new momentum. Still, there's a lot of work to do and some of us hope to have performances on par with Windows.
We should keep in mind that DX has a 15 years lead of development on us.
I'm very confident that things are going to get better over time but in the meanwhile I understand why some of us are disapointed.
Maybe we should see the state of gaming on linux like a big beta and we are contributing to make it better?

Seriously I found this website about racing games on linux. Anyone tried some of these?
http://www.lgdb.org/category/genre/racing [External Link]
Looking forward to Grid2 and Project Cars.
Edit:
In fact, I don't look to what's out on Windows. I just play the games that are offered to me on Linux and I'm quite happy with what's being offered.
I have 41 games, that I have played, in my librairie and 44 more in my Wishlist that I want to play.
Ive had a lot of fun playing The Witcher 2 and look forward to The Witcher 3. Right now, I really enjoy XCom: Ennemy Unknown. Played through Metro Last Light and the Half Life series and enjoyed them. And today, I got this news about Pillars of Eternity and Chivalry Medieval Warfare and these are 2 games that I will enjoy too. What else? Sanctum 2 and Natural Selection 2 that I had fun with. I also keep an eye on Interstellar Marines and Wasteland 2 and I hope to see Homefront 2 and Metro 2033 appear in the Steam store in a near future.
Forgot to mention Portal and Portal II.
Oh! War Thunder.
Not a bad lineup, IMO...

Quoting: GuestYeah racing is what's really missing right now. Hey?! What about Super Tux Cart? :)Quoting: MohandevirShould have re-read myself. No worries ;)… What I meant is: there is not a single (good, native, not top-down) racing game on Linux. Very few (playable, fun) solo FPS’s. The only western 3D action RPG is pathetic and unplayable. Very few and no good (Starcraft-quality) RTS.

What I meant it's that with 786 games on Steam only... we are beginning to have an interresting offering. Could have more AAA titles (I hope it's a matter of time)but in comparison with the situation 3 years ago, when we could barely play on Linux whithout wine, It's much better now.

Quoting: GuestSorry you are right. The way I wrote it, it's like if we had the same choices than on other platforms and it's not true and it's not what I meant either. Should have re-read myself.Quoting: MohandevirThis is what's great in the gaming offerings... There's plenty of choices for all kind of players. And now, we have that many choices even on Linux!Unfortunately that’s just not true.

Fallout 3 looks great but it's absolutely not in the same category.
Pillars of Eternity is the evolution of games like Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment, Neverwinter Nights and Icewind Dale.
Of all my experiences as a gamer, this is the kind of stuff that gets me dependent. You'll need a crowbar to get me off my pc screen! Probably because, in my youth, I was an AD&D Second Edition hardcore player (just gave you a hint about my age). :)

This is the game I am waiting for since early 2013. But I will not pre-order.
I'll wait for the official release and, maybe with a little luck, it will come with a Steam sale discount.
What I like it's the fact that they never had any doubts about the Linux version. They never played with that aspect and announced it early in the development.
It's my kind of game and it looks awesome!

Exactly, just from the start, if game developers could switch from DX to OpenGL, to develop on windows, it would be a first step and the ports to Linux/MAC would get a performance boost and be much easier to make. OpenGL would get much more love from developers and would become much better.
Spin that wheel! :)
But let me guess... DX is required and OpenGL is not available on Xboxes... That would be Microsoft way of doing things.

Just thinking about it... The problem is not the fact that Steam doesn't run on Windows 8. It always did.
At the beginning of the SteamOS adventure, the major points that Valve put forward was the need to be independant from MS thecnologies because they feared that MS may decide to stop supporting the Steam client, in a future version of Windows. It's all about the windows store being in direct competition with Steam and D3D12 being a nightmare for developers.
Being able to replace Metro with Steam Big Picture doesn't change that in any way... I might be wrong...

Dropping SteamOs development after that much efforts and money invested feels kind of big.
My other point is can you thrust MS on the long run?
Personally, I don't. They have the right to implement the Big Picture mode in Windows 8, but what about windows 9 and 10? Don't forget that Steam Machines are in direct competition with XBone (even win8 with big picture).
What if MS decides to pull the plug, once Valve has dropped Linux support?
Valve will have to start all over again... What a waste of time! It doesn't make sense to me. Valve would still be dependant on the goodwill of MS. I would not be safe if I were Valve.

Nvidia are working with Valve for the Steam Machines development and AMD proposed to supply Mantle (in part or in totality, I don't know) for the development of OpenGL-5.
Valve never said it was going to be an overnight revolution. In fact, they said many times that it would be a slow build-up.
We have to keep faith... :)
