GNOME Twitch releases a major update with notifications, offline channel searching and more

since Gnome Twitch added the emote, notifications and account login support i've started using this full time. I was using Orion from the AUR. which allowed for account login and notifications, while keeping a native looking UI.

ARK: Survival Evolved has a major update with a needed UI refresh

Quoting: CyberRatThe design is half done and not consistent, the main menu, server browser and options screen are still in the old style. So it clearly is unfinished. Next to that, on the center, it rains with a clear sky, and thunder sounds without the lightning, so that is still broken too.
it was a couple of months ago, maybe December time frame that at least for me, the clouds (for the most part) are there in a more volumetric way but they don't have special effects.
the rain and high quality ground textures are now working, except I feel that there may be some special cloud effects missing, but it does have better shadows in the middle of the nighttime when it is supposed to get darker it actually does, at least in my experience with the game so far. I can even go in caves without the crazy water effect issues now, although it's bright as daylight, which it should be very dark.
The storms I've seen on the Scorched Earth map actually seemed to work, with lightning working. although the shaders are off a bit, it does get darker and has wind effects.
the downside right now is after about 2 to 4 hours of playtime I will end up getting the shader artifacts associated to the rain and water effects, it happens randomly, turning it into the odd black and multi-colored artifacts. there are still issues with waterfall effects, inside caves.

I'm not claiming this game to be perfect by any stretch, it still has a number of bugs across all platforms. but I have noticed that it has gotten better in past 3 to 4 months, for at least some of us, I highly doubt I'm the only one. it's obvious to me that Mac and Linux are not much of a priority, nor did I expect it to be. I just hope they keep fixing the Linux client to make it more playable. all we can do is keep reporting the bugs and hopefully they get fixed.

if not then chalk it up to a lesson learned.

ARK: Survival Evolved has a major update with a needed UI refresh

the overall layout of the UI seems a bit better but the design is meh... I haven't had to much of the graphical glitches anymore. the textures and lighting seems to be much closer to the windows version from my more recent test plays.
btw, there's beta options now in the game properties. there is a newrenderer option which i've been using, which gives me a bit of a fps boost. nothing huge, mainly a more stable 60+ fps, but it does seem to have a bit better lighting and texture quality than the "stable" version of the game. also it still uses the older UI which is nice as well.

I hope planet explorers gets the 5.6 unity upgrade, it could really use it :)

Mad Max meets Vulkan in a new fully public beta for Linux, benchmarks and OpenGL vs Vulkan comparisons

very nice work there Feral :) I tried the benchmark with and without the steam overlay and it didn't seem to matter the steam overlay on the current steam beta didn't effect the results.
A general note on fps from the steam overlay option shows ~120 fps while general roaming on the map, ~100 fps during a storm, ~90 fps in the strongholds. This is very high settings with 8x anisotropic filtering.

i'm not sure if the steam overlay fps counter is correct, but I ran it during the benchmark tests and it showed similar numbers to what the test shows.

my benchmark tests at very high settings:
Camp - Hollow Point
average - 117

Stronghold - Tyrant's Lash
average - 66

Cutscene - Hope, Glory, and Dog is Dead
average - 108

Cutscene - Landmover
average - 119

Quoting: FuriousI don't have Vulkan capable GPU, but maybe someone try -vulkan -sm5 ?
Vulkan last I checked with Epic is not in the Linux builds.
I tried ./UE4-Linux-Test UnrealTournament -vulkan and i see in terminal LogRHI: GL_NV_draw_vulkan_image is loaded. but I tried UE4-Linux-Test without the -vulkan flag and noticed the vulkan image is now loaded by default.
I also get 60 to 80 fps with max settings using a gtx 780 ti on my system.

I was getting 30 to 45 frames at max settings with the original default setup.

I also see GL_NV_draw_vulkan_image is loaded with ./UE4-Linux-Shipping UnrealTournament -vulkan as well. the fps aren't quite as stable as the test version. I get framerate lag spikes more-so than on test. mainly when picking up new weapons. but overall it stays 60 to 80fps, but the lag spikes drop it down to the ~20s but it quickly jumps back after the weapon pickup.
That GL_NV_draw_vulkan_image shows up even when not adding a Vulkan flag. It's an OpenGL extension.

I see no difference when adding the "-vulkan" flag, and as I said last time I spoke to Epic, Vulkan was not enabled in the Linux builds.
GL_NV_draw_vulkan_image is a vulkan api. it was introduced in the 1.0 spec. This extension provides DrawVkImageNV() for drawing a rectangle to display some/all of the contents of a two-dimensional Vulkan VkImage.
it is an opengl extension.

This extension also provides functions for synchronizing drawing between Vulkan and OpenGL. Basically the extension provides a way for presenting rendered Vulkan content within an OpenGL context.

I think -vulkan and -opengl4 must change the renderer to the same config. because I had horrible fps on the default config (i'm assuming it was opengl3)and I've only tried the vulkan flag so far.

The developers of 'Ticket to Ride' have abandoned Linux support for their game
28 Mar 2017 at 9:23 am UTC Likes: 3

they even have one of their main feature bullet points as: True cross-platform: players can challenge on other platforms including Steam PC and Mac, Linux, Android, iPhone and iPad

that would constitute false advertising in the US. I'm sure if people sent a support request through steam they would most likely get a refund. but hard to say really.

It looks like we may be getting a Planescape Torment Enhanced Edition

I think I might grab this just for nostalgia and I enjoyed this more-so than BG because of the unique story and world of Planescape: Torment.

although I'd really like to see something new for a change, Spelljammer is probably one of the most exciting yet is never touched.

Interview with Feral Interactive about their ports and Mesa drivers, Steam keys offered for Mesa developers
22 Mar 2017 at 8:32 pm UTC

I really appreciate the work Feral have been doing, they have become a great addition to gaming on Linux as a whole. I hope they continue to do such great work which will help give Linux some sort of standards as far as the gaming community goes. this will undoubtedly become a huge help for all distros that want to support the gaming side of Linux.
it looks like MESA could use a new feature for an on-disk-shader-cache :)
