GE-Proton 9-8 and 9-9 fixes Resident Evil on GOG, various other game fixes

Quoting: ssj17vegetaJust a question : do specific changes made in GE get eventually backported into mainstream Proton ?
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but no changes from GE gets backported into Proton since they contain video codecs and other libraries that cannot be distributed unless a license is paid to allow it. This is why Valve doesn't include certain video codecs with Proton (which is those colored bars that appear during cinematic scene) and has to use workarounds to make it play nice.
That's part of it yes, Valve cannot legally provide support for the codecs used, GE works around it.

As for "backported into mainstream Proton", a lot of what is pulled into GE is directly from upstream Proton (and it's related packages) just it's sometimes faster (but again, less testing and no real support).
Shame too since having the old pc versions of re available drm free is a big win for preservation, but having licensed codecs takes away from that abit

I'm glad there's workarounds with these sort of things, same reason I can enjoy my wireless xbox controllers on linux using official dongle as well

Quoting: Doktor-MandrakeDid they not fix the issues with it? I was initially interested in it, especially with it having splitscreen

But all the issues people reported just put me off wanting to get it unless it's ever on a BIG discount
According to the Steam forums they fixed some issues and introduced others.
But I think the problem is that even if the game was practically bug-free, by now way to many people lost interest in it. That is a death sentence for a multiplayer game.
Ya I remember the original version getting updated to no longer rely on gamespy

Seems like this new version is completely pointless (at least for pc users) .. splitscreen is the only reason I could see myself ever buying it

Quoting: neolithWhile they are at it, can they turn back time a couple months and unfumble the Battlefront release?
I am incredibly disappointed in how that went. It should be impossible to screw up a re-release of an old game so badly, that the original still has a way higher playercount...

Loved Dogz growing up, actually been playing Petz 4 (catz and dogz combined) lately, had to use VM though even with wine I couldn't get it working right

Canonical detail improvements the Steam Snap, work to advance gaming continues on Ubuntu

Quoting: grigiIt's a laudable effort from Canonical to try and harden the linux desktop by using sandboxing as standard.
Just, why do they always have to do the Not-Invented-Here thing all the time.

True, Snap supports more use cases than either Flatpak or oci, but its such a closed ecosystem that nobody else dares adopt it. So it just develops at a slower pace, and gets less testing. And sits with horrible performance for years, etc...

It's basically the reason I tell people to move off Ubuntu as their snapification of everything is really breaking things.

Frustrating that Ubuntu (Means: Working together well) is not working together.
What do your suggest for the people you tell to move off ubuntu?

I'm on ubuntu atm and mostly stuck with ubuntu to keep things as simple as possible for me, I was enjoying linux mint prior to that but don't like how further behind mint is with things like wayland ect

Valve faces a £656 million lawsuit in the UK for 'overcharging 14 million PC gamers'
13 Jun 2024 at 12:50 am UTC

I'm sort of conflicted because tbh I really love valve and like them as a company (most of the time lol)

Can someone more intelligent then a simpleton like myself just assure me.. that they're being very harsh against valve?

There's been drama before about the cut they take to sell games on their platform ect... but as a uk citizen I feel the price of the games they sell are EXACTLY the same as places like gog and epic games?

Maybe on GMG or something you can get a steam key and it's cheaper, but I don't really understand how I'm being overcharged specifically by valve.

Sorry if this post is abit stupid, just abit confused what valve has done wrong compare to any other high profile platform to buy pc games like epic or gog
