KDE Plasma 6.2 adding a pop-up for donations, plus they want to make a next-generation KDE OS

I approve. They're not being dicks and forcing it on anyone like I imagine lesser developers would be when they want money (COUGH COUGH WINDOWS 11 COUGH MICROSOFT EDGE COUGH). All I ask is that making "don't ask again" a more visible option instead of just "no thanks" would be a good idea.

Battlefield 1 gets EA anticheat in September - will be left broken on Steam Deck / Linux

Still, no refunds will come for those who are outside the normal Steam refund policies, even if your primary way to play is a Linux-based platform and that stings to just have a broken game.
My best friend got a refund for Rocket League after hundreds of hours of playing over the course of years, when Epic Games pulled Linux support and sucked it into their Fortnite monolith. So it's not impossible. Just unlikely.

Quoting: hazukashiidesuActually this really is a bummer.. I've got a few workmates I join for early saturday morning BF1(only time we all have available anymore with kids and all), maybe we'll find another game, but I'm going to miss how it is now.
A lot of the DICE developers who worked on BF1 left to go make THE FINALS, it's more of a TF2/Apex like shooter but it's worth trying and I see a lot of Battlefield fans getting into it. Just beware the bugs... lots of them...

There's also indie projects like Battlebit Remastered which is more directly inspired by Battlefield and has anticheat support whitelisted on Linux.

Microsoft donates the Mono Project to the Wine team

I usually have slightly more respect for the SDKs Micro$oft puts out as their developer tools and resources are typically less slimy than average Microsoft shenanigans. But this just seems like a PR stunt.

This doesn't matter at all. If Microsoft killed it, it would just get forked. If Microsoft kept it, nothing would change, or they'd screw it up and it would just get forked. If Microsoft transferred it (here)... oh wow, we could have just forked it!

And I want you to pay special attention to that part where they talk about migrating all your stuff to use the proprietary .NET instead, because it has all of the benefits of Mono (????), or something. Sounds a lot like typical Microsoft anticompetitiveness and "please bro use my stuff bro" to me.

Just ignore it. Big corporations aren't your friends.

Humble is doing a big Resident Evil Bundle again that's worth a look

I don't think anything Capcom is worth paying for after the Enigma DRM controversy.

Remember they retroactively broke Linux support for a few games with that malware.

Microsoft breaks some Linux dual-boots in a recent Windows update

Quoting: soulsource
Quoting: Claude_LibI have Windows on a separate drive for rare occasions when I need it. The only clue two systems have about each other's existence is that Windows messes up the clock because I keep forgetting to set the RealTimeIsUniversal registry key.
This update might break exactly such setups. The list of revoked keys is stored in an EFI variable (-> mainboard memory), and if Windows is unaware that there is a Linux installation, it will happily update that list - making Secure Boot prevent the execution of GRUB versions signed with the now-revoked keys.
I actually remember there being something about this previously around the time Windows 11 first leaked, where there was some concern that Microsoft was going to force OEMs to keep secure boot enabled with no opt-out, and then since the secure boot keys are only their keys by default you don't really have a way to move off of Windows any longer. It didn't end up going that route, or if it ever does, at least not as soon as some of us expected.

NVIDIA stable driver 560.35.03 released for Linux with Wayland fixes
26 Aug 2024 at 7:14 am UTC

Any progress forwards is a net positive, even if I personally have zero interest in using Wayland ever for various reasons.

But I am also seeing that with this news, a lot of people are blindly jumping into Wayland on GeForce expecting it to be flawless now, and then either being disappointed or denying that it's causing them problems when they inevitably find a major performance hiccup. Mostly some less experienced users in Discord servers I'm active in. I think we need to remember this is still years out from being a complete stand-in for X. Give it time.

I haven't run an upgrade from 555.58 yet, so I can't speak on whether or not 560 causes the aforementioned issues with Proton.

Descent 3 open source project gets a first release
26 Aug 2024 at 7:01 am UTC Likes: 1

I picked up a Sidewinder Force Feedback Pro earlier this year specifically for Descent I & II but never got to use it due to some soldering accident with the necroware game port adapter. Haven't gotten around to un-screwing the PCB and I don't want to start over and make a mess out of the DA-15 port already attached. Or give myself second degree burns again.

Perhaps this is good motivation to finally use it.

Steam Beta adds many more Game Recording improvements
14 Jul 2024 at 6:11 pm UTC

Steam game recording runs horribly for me, I get like 10 frames per second in the video regardless of the encoder used or the quality, and after all of that, the timeline thing doesn't work. They also don't have a clip sharing feature, it's essentially just glorified GPU-screen-recorder. I appreciate that it exists, and some of the game integration features are actually really cool but I think I'll just stick with what I already have.

Quoting: nnohonsjnhtsylaySteams game recording feature is unfortunately not hardware accelerated yet on nvidia, it doesn't even use nvenc (it uses libx264). It's hardware accelerated on amd though (at least on steam deck).
Yeah my experience seems to reflect that. It looks like they designed it mainly for the Steam deck and not much else.

PS2 Emulator PCSX2 2.0 is out now and it's a huge upgrade

PCSX2 is up there with the elite league of golden quality emulators, it already was for a while but I applaud the continued dedication.

Now all I wish for is a Cell PowerPC port so my PS3 can play wipEout fusion...
