Quoting: GuestI'll never stop using Windows as my main. Steam Deck and running Unraid on my servers is the closest I will get to using Linux.
Huh. I suppose you're the first example of something we may see more of in the future: Someone hanging here at Gaming on Linux because they use a Steam Deck, even though desktop-wise they're purely a Windows person.

So a complete product is not one that only gets the basics right.. And I love to see that there's people / companies out there that still care for that and don't do a release that's rather some kind of public beta.
But that is exactly what they did by releasing it under early access and treating it like a normal release, with typical post release additions and all that. The only ones that get shafted here are the original backers that paid the full price for the final release version that gets postponed all the time while they add DLC like features and do sales promotions to attract additional new customers.

If anything this is a typical case of what not to do if you care about releasing a finished game.
Do you know if the game is still "unfinished" in any playability sort of sense? How much does it matter what they call it? If it's more "finished" than many games given full release, is it a problem that they prefer to call it "early access" still?

I've been reading all the talk about this but it occurs to me that I don't actually have any games it applies to. Not because I've deliberately avoided the company, although I can imagine doing that, just because that's how it worked out . . . I guess their games aren't generally in my genres or something.

Quoting: Purple Library GuyIt's odd . . . I tell myself I care about the gameplay, not the graphics. And I sure enjoyed the heck out of Civ II back in the day, and its graphics were pretty basic. Master of Orion I, too.

But when I tried for instance Free Orion, I found its major lack of pretty made the experience so abstract that I kind of lost immersion--I didn't have this mental/emotional feel for either my bunch or the alien bunches, so instead of playing a faction I just felt like I was moving symbols around a screen, kind of. So I wonder if I've gotten too used to Civ V eye candy to enjoy going back to a more rudimentary look.
You might like https://www.remnantsoftheprecursors.com/ [External Link] then. Pretty graphics for an open-source game, but old school MOO gameplay.
In fact I do like it.

Dwarf Fortress on Steam is a smash hit, devs confirm future plans (like Linux support)

I guess the thing about Dwarf Fortress is there are a lot of people out there who have heard it's cool, but who never had the motivation to sort of hunt it down and figure out what to do with it. And now, there it is on Steam!

Quoting: samurroIts double the weight of the switch, at least to the quick google search I did. So I am not sure where your arguments are. I even said "mobile gaming".

But I get the feeling this forum is not accustomed to different opinions on anything...
Well, I've got weak nerd arms and I'm playing with it. I'm sure this is true for some others here.
What I've seen a number of times is people saying that while the weight is greater than the Switch, it's actually easier to game with for extended periods because the ergonomics of the grip are so much better--it fits naturally into the hands, where the Switch is thinner and requires a more active hold that is less comfortable to maintain.
Mileage may vary, no doubt.

Quoting: cprnActually, can they legally make improvements and not contribute the changes back upstream? Doesn't Zlib license forbid that? I know it doesn't say so explicitly but it was approved by FSF and I though all FSF approved licenses were based on this premise. Also, if it doesn't, how can it be described as "compatible with GPL"?
The GPL says you have to provide all the code, including your changes, to the people you distribute the software to. "Upstream", by whatever name, isn't a concept in the GPL. And I think this is by design; the GPL is intended to as it were democratize software, not to give more power to original developers or central repositories.
