So I'm a little unclear about all the complexities and drama of the different filesystems. exFAT is the filesystem that was FAT but then it went on a diet, right?

Quoting: GuestAm I the only one wonder how this adds up to Linux Gaming except of being a Linux distro? o.O
There were just articles for Elementary OS and ZorinOS and now you're asking about this?
Liam always does articles on distros. Often DEs as well. I guess they're what you play games on. And also Liam does not restrict himself--he's always said if he wants to do an article about N, he'll do an article about N. And there's nothing we can do to stop him! Bwahahaha!!!

Quoting: scaineElite Dangerous is now playable without workarounds?? If true, that's a huge amount of .Net work that's happened behind the scenes - their launcher is an absolute abomination and a constant source of pain.
Hmmm . . . I wonder if it's worth trying again the only game I ever bought hoping to use Proton, Galactic Civilizations 3. It has a dodgy launcher too.

Quoting: Guestwhat's the point of providing a windows 11 layout? Not even windows users want that. The first thing I see them doing is to try to find the setting to put it back in the corner.
Uh... Old people already accustomed to that windows if I had to find a use case.
I think pcavaclanti's point was more that exactly that kind of people would rather have a Windows classic look (which apparently ZorinOS also has), more along Windows 7 lines, than a Windows 11 look.

Far as I can tell from the article, the Windows11 look is actually included more because they think it works well with smaller touch screens.

I look forward to all the improvements KDE Plasma will get with the Steam Deck

Quoting: Sputnik_tr_02KDE Plasma is awesome, it was actually one of the reasons that I switch to Linux back in the day.
Plasma isn't that old, is it? Hell, I remember the KDE 1.0 release and why Gnome was created in the first place (literally because Qt wasn't GPL).

I tend to think that the Steam Deck should be Plasma Mobile unless docked though. Or the Deck needs a stylus... using KDE on that small of a screen with how many options it has will be... not as great as if they used Gnome.

Say what you will about Gnome-shell, it does sort of succeed at being touch friendly and desktop friendly at the same time, where KDE has a separate shell for touch / small screen footprints.
KDE will certainly improve in that regard, and not only the shell. KDE mobile goes way beyond the shell and making plasmashell touch friendly isn't really the problem.
Regarding Stylus: You realize the Deck comes with 2 quite advanced touchpads and a LOT of buttons? I'd be surprised if we couldn't get some quite comfortable mouse simulation/input that way.
Touchpads are generally trash for cursor movement (yeah yeah, MacOS supposedly has great touchpads. I still prefer the little TrackPoints on Thinkpads). Zeroing on tiny options with the touchpads may be problematic. Guess we'll find out when they start shipping.
Be hilarious if you end up using the gyros for fine cursor positioning.

Quoting: LachuMaybe not related to topic. Could I install normal Wine as compatibility tool to play Civ5?
You'd be better off joining the GOL Discord [External Link], or starting a forum post for a query like this. However, judging by the ProtonDB comments, the only reason you'd want to play a native game like Civ5 under wine is for multiplayer with Windows players... and that's reported to be extremely flaky under wine, with either immediate disconnects, or one player reporting that they were kicked out every hour on the hour. Probably not recommended.
Outside of multiplayer . . . I for one have never had a moment's trouble with the native version, and I've racked a few hours of Civ5.

why ?
For one, because if you install Windows, and then install Steam's "new big picture == same interface as the Deck" on it, every time you start the device you'll still be booting into Windows and only then using your controller stuff (which Windows is not intended for) to start Steam. It'd be a pain.
Keeping SteamOS on, you boot and your games are right there.
There is already an option to start up Steam when you log in and also to start Steam in big picture mode (obviously will be changed to whatever the new mode is called).
Really? I had no idea. Well, scratch that point then.

Quoting: LoftyWho knows how aggressive MS will be about proton and Windows 'emulation' in future, they have the power to make a new APi (DX13) that everyone uses and takes months to be compatible with proton. Im okay with playing a vast library of Native,DX11.DX12 games but those people who might be from a Windows or even console background might be scratching their heads a bit.

I don't expect Microsoft to be as petty as this though.
Microsoft has certainly always in the past been as petty as this. But that wouldn't IMO be a huge issue. It would take some time to get people to start using their fancy new DX13. It took years before there were noticeable amounts of games running DX12, and everyone agreed that DX12 was a thing that had a good reason to exist, for similar reasons to why Vulkan needed to exist. With the momentum Proton, DXVK etc. have currently (and the strength of Valve's motivation), they could probably get a DX13-->Vulkan thingie going before there was even any appreciable uptake. Particularly because developers would probably not be all that receptive to a DX13 basically just created to nobble the competition, and because if it was a rush job done for that reason it would probably suck.
They might get quicker uptake if it was really just DX12 version 1.2 with a few little jingle bells stuck to it . . . but then it would be really easy for Proton to adjust to it.

In general, I think it's at least as difficult for Microsoft to move the target, as it is for Valve to adjust their aim.
