Quoting: The_Aquabatyep I was checking my weather forecast and tomorrow it will be 25C and it's winter :dizzy:
but last week we had below 0C temperatures... global warming sucks
Yes, well, for a little while a few weeks ago, here in British Columbia there were places with the third highest temperatures on Earth. That is not supposed to happen in Canada. One town beat its previous climate record by 4-5 degrees C for days on end, hitting mid-40s, and then spontaneously combusted and burned to the ground. Really, WTF?!

I'm now a true convert after using a Vertical Mouse

Quoting: ZlopezI recently got myself Logitech MX Vertical [External Link], because wireless mouse is better fit for my ergonomic solution and it's a really good mouse.
Lefties need to remember that vertical mice are definitely not interchangeable between hands. And of course we lefties are an afterthought, if a thought at all. So for instance, that website lets you add one of those to your cart--simple, easy, no fuss. And no left-handed option. Left-handed ones of those may exist, but they're not making it obvious.

What all this makes me wonder is, are there egg rolls out there that are . . . inglorious?

To be honest, in my neck of the woods we switched to calling them "spring rolls" maybe 30 years ago at least.

Valve talk about learning from mistakes with the upcoming Steam Deck

Overall this is not a bad talk. One thing I notice though is that the "lessons learned" they're talking about are all fairly low-level. I mean like hardware, enabling software like Proton and stuff like that.

There is no mention of UI polish, availability of extra services like video streaming, or failures of marketing. I hope that's just because these are low-level-stuff kind of guys and not because none of those lessons were learned.

Linux has finally hit that almost mythical 1% user share on Steam again

Quoting: Purple Library GuyDid you read my post beyond that point?
yes, I did. But as I've written later on my observation is that people don't care about that as much as they probably should.
That's OK. They don't care about getting a different UI at all. Windows users don't want that. Nearly anyone considering switching from Windows is doing it because Microsoft is making it in some way difficult to continue using Windows, or they've had it up to here with some annoying thing Windows/Microsoft is doing--not because they don't like the basic traditional Windows UI.

Hence I don't see why you think it's so important to give Windows users something they don't want, rather than give them something like Windows without the pain-and-annoyance points.

Quoting: Purple Library GuyWhat's annoying about Windows is mostly all the Xtra Proprietary-ness.
But you do realize that most of people do not care about that? We may, but most of the folks just want to get their job done.
Did you read my post beyond that point? I spent the next paragraphs itemizing all the annoyances in Windows, most of them flowing directly from the proprietary nature. People might not conceive of all the annoyances in Windows as coming from its proprietary nature, but they still experience them and find them annoying.

Quoting: Purple Library GuySecond, there are two main reasons musicians, graphic designers etc. use OS X. The first is that it has an excellent software ecosystem for that kind of people
yes - and its backed by the OS. For example - on OSX you basically connect an audio device and you have low latency audio out of the box.
On Windows you need to add some special drivers. Oh, and have you tried it on Linux? Yes, in theory it is doable but you need to fiddle with JACK and preferably custom kernel. I doubt most of musicians would go with that - not because they're not capable to learn it, but because fiddling with systems is not their job.
That's what I think when I say "we should do better". We should offer better OS tools that would grant user better experience when they're trying to get their job done.
Sure, I'm perfectly willing to agree to that. So OK, rather than "two main reasons . . . neither of which is the UI" it's "three main reasons . . . none of which is the UI". But none of that has anything to do with Gnome vs Mate vs Windows UI vs Mac UI. You are arguing off to the side of my point.

At this point, are you arguing for a position or just quibbling for the sake of it?

Quoting: s8as8aIf you don't need macro compatibility, perhaps you would also like ONLYOFFICE?
Maybe. Looking at those links, it seems potentially decent. But I like LibreOffice fairly well, and I have confidence that it will continue to exist and see updates, and it's open source--does ONLYOFFICE get me anything LibreOffice doesn't?
I meant to use it in addition to LibreOffice, not instead of it. In fact, I too prefer LibreOffice overall; what ONLYOFFICE offers is superior Microsoft Office format compatibility (supposedly because its native format(s) is/are Microsoft's proprietary format(s), and it therefore doesn't have to convert from Microsoft's format(s) to its own open one(s), like LibreOffice does), and, as can be seen on the Flathub page, ONLYOFFICE is also free as in freedom. (I should probably have said that last time. ;P)

Also, for what it's worth, in my case, using ONLYOFFICE on the cloud also allows me to have a free-as-in-money office suite that is more free as in freedom, has better compatibility with Microsoft Office and is less likely to spy on me than Google Docs (or Office 365!).
Interesting points. I might look into it, especially if I find myself wanting to do some cloudy-stuff.
