Garry Newman of Facepunch mentions working with EAC for Rust on Linux with Proton

Quoting: sfjuocekrYou understand there are more Linux users than the Steam Deck users?
Well, since there are currently zero Steam Deck users that's trivially true. But I don't think we know any such thing about what the situation will be once Steam Decks have a year of sales under their belt. If the Steam Deck makes 2 million sales, there will be nearly twice as many Steam Deck users on Steam as destkop Linux users on Steam. That would be a good outcome for the Steam Deck, but not a really extreme one.

In Spindle you become Death and figure out why no one is dying along with your pet Pig

The premise sounds cool to me. And I have nothing against Zelda-esque action adventures. But the combination seems weird. 'Cause, like, Death is apparently just some schmuck who can be whacked by a slime or something, which feels wrong to me, plus if they succeed it raises all kinds of existential questions. And, Death, and even Death's pig, seem to go around killing things left and right when the premise says the problem is nobody can die. I mean, I can see an exception where nobody can normally die but if Death exerts his power personally it's still curtains. But how's the pig doing it?

Edited to add: Also the trailer seems to show Death needing to hit things multiple times. Not even bosses, just random-encounter-looking thingies. Shouldn't it be like "I am Death. Taste my scythe . . . briefly." one touch and gone?

PulseAudio 15.0 rolls out with new features and hardware support

Quoting: wvstolzingAbsolutely; & with a bit of tinkering, even the latency is tolerable for things like video chat.
I have zero issues with latency on pulseaudio for all normal uses including gaming, conference calls and netflix. And obviously it's not notable on music playback.
The sole reason I use Jack for is music production, where one wants a very low latency. But in all other settings I don't even notice there *are* any latency at all. To be honest I think one has to be extremely fixated on detecting latency in order to be bothered with it.
Y'know, it's when I read knowledgeable commentary like this about Linux sound that I realize,
I don't know Jack about it.

Frozenbyte are now telling Linux users to use Proton, even for their older games

Quoting: ElectricPrismAll the AAA simping and white knighting of why AAA games can't support Linux cuz "tem not has enough li nuks mons 4 coleg" is completely dashed to pieces by what we saw at Activision+Blizzard. No wonder their catalog has been absolute trash for the last few years.
Holy Bacon! I went and looked this up--what a bunch of complete vicious incompetent assholes.

Splitgate gets an extended Beta, developers raise $10M

So initially I was thinking in terms of using the portals to go somewhere and get the drop on the enemy. But presumably you could also set up a withering crossfire somewhere and use the portal to drop enemies into it.
Not that I'll ever play this game--I don't actually do FPS, both because my reflexes are certainly not up to it and because I'm more of a strategy game kind of guy. But the tactics of portals in combat seem like they'd be interesting.

Feral no longer porting A Total War Saga: TROY to Linux, citing less demand since Proton
28 Jul 2021 at 4:59 pm UTC Likes: 4

Quoting: JahimselfI always prefered Feral port to proton which is full of glitches and bugs. Feral port are always smooth with good sound implementation and 0 bug.

The problem is since the main member of feral left for Unity, there is only total war game, and I don't like total war series.
Well, silver lining there: I think there's a good chance that a good Linux developer in Unity would have a broader impact making Unity generally make Linux games well and painlessly, than the same person in Feral helping to port one game at a time.

Get a closer look at the Steam Deck's Trackpad and Gyroscopic controls

Quoting: LoftyI see the same thing with the steam deck, the need for two haptics is limited.. one i can see for use as a mouse but two i don't really get..
Mostly, I suspect, because having a big chunk of blank space there on an otherwise symmetric control scheme would be weird, but you can restrict either touchpad to particular regions of the screen so you could use the left mouse just for minimaps, mini-menus, macros, and things like that, while the right mouse does right mouse things.
Also having that blank touchpad-sized space on the left could be quite disappointing for left-handed players.
I resemble that remark.

You know, it occurs to me that Valve are doing the hype a bit better this time. They certainly seem to have IGN sewed up. But also, they keep coming up with little things about the Steam Deck to talk up, so they can put out stuff about one feature today, another feature another day, and keep the thing in people's vision.
This in turn is one more thing that's useful about them making the thing themselves. With Steam Machines, they couldn't really talk about its features because there were a bunch of different ones and they weren't in control of any of them. With the Steam Deck, they have one unified thing--there are specific facts about it that they can talk about. Plus they seem to have put a fair amount of love into designing it, so they're happy to brag about it.
So far I think the PR is going fairly well.
