Steam purchases now clearly state you're just getting a license not ownership

Quoting: CaldathrasI think that software licensing confuses a lot of people, who are expecting an ownership model such as you get when you purchase something like a hammer.
. . . or a physical book. Which is not unreasonable.

Complicating things in the other direction, software licensing seemingly "confuses" a lot of software licensers, who often claim rights in their licenses that they are not, in most jurisdictions, legally entitled to claim. Just because some software company puts "use of this software entitles us to your firstborn child as slave labour" deep in their license doesn't make it real or enforceable even if you click.

Minetest breaks the chains of being a Minecraft clone with a new name — Luanti

Well, reasonable that they changed the name. As names go, it's a nice enough name for some sorts of things . . . it would be a fine name for a random open source infrastructure project, or a Linux distro or something. It has a pleasant sound and a clever derivation. For games though I do tend to prefer that names be sort of descriptive, I find these abstract names are unmemorable, don't give me anything to hang onto to remind me that this name belongs with that thing.

Quoting: Linux_RocksI find it funny how Nintendo ends up getting blamed in the comments somehow. Could you imagine the PR nightmare it would cause if they were found out? Nintendo isn't stupid enough to do something like this. Even if some of their actions (especially as of late) have been questionable. I'm not saying that a big company isn't or couldn't be behind this. I'm just saying that I highly doubt Nintendo would be the ones to do so.

Then as far as it possibly being a false flag to cause Palestinians further issues. I could see that. Seeing as how petty western imperialist countries can be with their bullshit, actions, and propaganda.
How would they be found out? Whoever did it could have paid a hacker, who could have been in a differrnt country AND using proxy

I can totally imagine someone like Nintendo who dont always play by the rules to do this.
I assume huge companies would attack Internet Archive with their huge lawyer armies. Legal battles can have lasting effect on how the Internet Archive works.
To be clear, I don't think a big company did this. But, there is a potential motivation for using hackers instead of armies of lawyers: The Internet Archive is popular. Going after them officially could involve a significant PR hit. Hire some hackers and if you don't get caught, nobody know it was you, no PR debacle. Of course the downside if you DO get caught is pretty huge, so most companies' decision-making probably wouldn't consider it worth the risk.

I liked Pandora: First Contact. I was looking for an Alpha Centauri-type game, and it came out and so did Civ: Beyond Earth, and neither of them quite felt like what I really wanted. But I played both a fair amount, and played and enjoyed Pandora about as much as Civ: BE, which is impressive considering we're talking MUCH smaller budget.

So I'll definitely think about giving this a shot.

Quoting: StellaI don't get why anyone would want to attack the internet archive??? That's like bombing a library. What's the frikkin point
Yes, well, when it comes to the bombing a library thing I keep expecting that to happen in the US. Lot of people these days that don't like libraries lending people the wrong books. Most of them simultaneously claiming to be free speech absolutists . . . some people make my mind boggle.

Quoting: ShadowXeldronThat was well timed. I've actually been considering a distrohop on my laptop to something KDE-based recently. I've just installed Plasma on top of Mint 21 for Wayland support but it's only KDE 5 which does irk me a bit. I haven't currently got the means to back up all my data though which has held me back a fair bit.
Since Mint doesn't really support KDE in the first place, if you're going to install it couldn't you install any KDE you wanted to?
I'm using the package that was on Ubuntu's repository because I'm lazy.
Fair enough. That's why I use Mint in the first place!
