GOG now using AI generated images on their store

Regardless of any thoughts on it one thing remains clear - the more AI generation is used for the little things "it's just this, it's just that!" - the more it will be accepted, and the more it will replace actual people. We'll see less actual art, less real intentional character in what we see - and more slop with melting consoles.
Gotta be real with you, this sounds hollow when you constantly promote ARC Raiders. Regardless of wether or not the actors signed off on it, there's nothing in there that needed it and it's just a severe cost cutting measure that'll lead to lower quality voice work the more accepted it is.

Nexus Mods say they are committed to supporting Vortex on SteamOS Linux

Better than nothing but you'd still be better off using dedicated managers than Vortex... Hope they can improve Vortex itself but I would give it a few years.

Ghostship - the new Super Mario 64 PC port gets a Linux release

Other ports of Mario 64 would get their compiled releases taken down but if you look you can still get the source code, this was because they'd get compiled together with the rom and so would include the assets within the build, which would be unauthorized distribution.

Only later on did it become standard to make N64 ports that would get the assets from a rom after the fact, which I think we first saw with Mario 64 on the co-op port, so that's why only those have releases sticking around in the open.

Nintendo rarely goes after you when they don't have a good angle, and using their assets or asking for money beyond just donations (see how Yuzu had early access builds behind Patreon) is a big no no.

Valve tweak Steam AI disclosure form for developers to clarify it's for content consumed by players
18 Jan 2026 at 2:17 pm UTC

All I'm gonna say is two things:

Vibe coding is a joke for a reason, too many problems arise from it, ESPECIALLY when it comes to security (and you should care about the security of your machine!). Wasn't the whole AI code on Windows thing a hot topic just about now? You realize why?

Far as I know, there is absolutely no punishment for not disclosing AI specifically anyway, so whatever rules Valve puts up on this doesn't really make it enforcement and won't encourage honestly either way, which means we can never be sure.

Steam Machine verification will have "fewer constraints" than Steam Deck - but text sizing worries me

I hope a good scale in 720p is required for full verification, entirely because as much as the high end crowd is already beyond 1080p, a lot of average people still carry ~720p screens around (myself included).
It's still HD and actually looks fine!

Even more AMD ray tracing performance improvements heading to Mesa on Linux

Whatever the price may be, I'm hoping Valve can at least make the new Machine a very stable experience with all the lessons learned through the Deck and with these updates. We should all care a bit more about the easy on boarding for people unfamiliar with Linux and PCs perhaps, especially in keeping performance up.

GOG plan to look a bit closer at Linux through 2026

Even without Linux as a factor, Galaxy by itself *barely* feels like something you can put much trust into in terms of functionality. I hope they can get developers that are capable of actually fixing it up, possibly redoing it as a whole, and take that as a basis for Linux support.
One can dream I guess, but I don't really count on much from GOG, just that their installers will be convenient someday.

Linaro reveal they're collaborating with Valve for the Steam Frame

The ARM SteamOS project runs so deep huh, I honestly have been less apprehensive about the adoption towards this architecture as of late since so much work is being put into compatibility for it. Hopefully this can help keep hardware budgets at least a bit somewhat in check.

Start 2026 off right with the massive 77 map mod Quake Brutalist Jam III

They have put up a standalone release in their website now, also simply bundles it in with librequake. No need to own Quake and give money to the Microsoft mob indeed :>

Epic and Steam banned it but HORSES is out now on other stores

I have to wonder how possible it is that there's some sort of organization targeting this game like what happened with payment processors recently. These companies (not necessarily Valve, but could again be payment processors or some partners of them too) can easily use the call of an angry organization, no matter how small, as an easy excuse to act on something they agree with but know will draw bad PR, but the excuse hasn't been put up yet so it's hard to say. However all you really need is the right push a lot of the time and censorship gets worse, this should be unacceptable to make sure we can still have art at all in the future.
