I have managed to make some more progress, I followed a YouTube video about updating punkbuster to get a little more familiar with the process and got punkbuster updated for both games. The issue I have remaining is that Steam's own browser in big picture mode has no options to change the user agent for BF3 meaning that the only way that I can get it working is in desktop mode.

Okay, I got some time to look at this. This only applies if you bought the games through steam and not those of us that bought the games physically and then had to register them through the EA app of the time. This is quite a big caveat as installing the EA App and launching the games from there means that a lot of things like the layouts don't seem to be available and the punkbuster update didn't go as planned (though I need to look at that again).

Also, I didn't figure out the user agent switching from the big picture mode interface, only from the desktop interface for BF3.

I own both of these games and a Steamdeck so I might give this a swing at some point. I stopped playing FPSes after BF4 and moved into MOBAs, but my Steamdeck is usually just an emulator for my stack of SEGA and PS games and it's good to give it a workout sometimes.

I actually have this game on my shelf of CD/DVD games. I think that I tried to add this and Battlefield 1942 to Steam some years back, along with a long list of others without luck. At least this is one game that I'll be able to play on Linux from that collection 🎉
