i think you guys are under estimating microsoft, they made a few trillions of dollars with windows, windows server (nowadays azure) and office, nowadays xbox can compete on how much money it does with windows.
how many dollars are they willing to lose to kill any chance of an competition to rise?
i wont be surprised if they put an ridiculous low price like 100 USD, until steamdeck fail, and if they lock the bootloader so you cant install linux.
they might as well give a lot of free games or gamepass to create an perception of value.
the average gamer wont care about any steamOS advantage, only the ones who owned an steamdeck or a few tech enthusiasts who watch youtubers talking about it or people who already own an steamOS device will know about it, existing users may keep using it but it wont grow any futher.
and lets not forget the elephant in the room, we lost support for GTA5 online and GTA6 will launch soon, on consoles first but if they count xbox as a console, then this device might have it! not to mention fortinite and others.
another thing to consider is that this thing has an 80whats battery, twice as big as the the LCD steamdeck, steamOS can be better but wont do miracles unless its runing on the same device.
valve also said that they wont be making exclusives so we cant count on it.
now microsoft will have an xbox branded device that can play sony games, pc games, and probably will figure out an way to make the old xbox games work on it as well, even if they only support a single hardware to make things easier for thenselves.
and even if they cant do that, they will use vaporware tatic to FUD steamdeck, just like they did with project milo, promisse the impossible and never deliver, the goal was not to make something cool and sell it to make a profit, the goal was to make the competition look obsolete to kill the desire to have it.
kinect was a flop? accessories that arent bundled with an console are a flop in general, but i wouldnt call 27 million units sold a flop, its a subset of the xbox360 user base but a quite large one, the only issue is that they had a bad PR at xbox one gen and the casual market was not loyal as they expected, because if it came bundled with the device it would have 100% of the marketshare of the console, definitely wouldnt be a flop.
on the flipside, this might harm nintendo sales, people may say their loyal fans will purchase anything they sell and they dont have to worry about with their exclusives , that is not true, otherwise gamecube and wiiU wouldnt have sold so poorly.
not to mention this might harm playstation sales as well, the next gen graphics arent that impressive compared to the previous gen, so people might be willing to play current gen games with graphics from the previous gen for portability sake.
if microsoft can harm nintendo and sony marketshare to the point they strugle to get thirdy party support they might try valve strategy, that would be our last chance and could be our best, an gamechanger that completely change the industry forever...
but im skeptical, i think microsoft, sony and nintendo will keep their power and steamOS/Steamdeck will lose share.

unfortunatelly brands like "xbox" and "windows" will help this sell a lot, i mean, if a lot of people purchased playstation portal, despite the steam deck doing everything it does + a lot more, why wouldnt an xbox portable sell a lot?
and i know xbox is struggling to sell compared to playstation, but it still sell a lot compared to the steam deck and the value proposition of an portable is much bigger than the home console.

a lot of people are against exclusives, now thanks to our lack of marketshare we have some games that on linux are exclusive to some devices, but on all other platforms arent exclusives...
and its not because vave paid then to have an exclusivity deal, but due to an issue on our ecosystem

Holyfuck!
when i saw an new device announced on the thumbnail, i was already happy thinking: ok, steam OS device right ?
HELL! even better! another linux device, companies wont be relying on SteamOS only!
the fact that they are begting on linux, not just on a valve branded one is quite promissing, i would say, the success of this device is more important than the success of steam deck or the other steamOS device that i forgot the name, this can prevent another android scenario!
now dont get me wrong, i will still purchase games mostly on steam and gog as a second option, and if/when i can afford, purchase an steamdeck instead, but i'm really excited now!
not to mention, another big thing: trackpads! i hope those become default and the industry start develop more games specifically targeting this form of input, we need inovation in gameplay , not just graphics, and new types of controler is one are where we can start this inovation, imagine if we didnt had thumbsticks to this day!
looking at the device , it dont seem to be as confortable as the steam deck (i mean the position of some things seems awkward to use)
and this d-pad looks REALLY BAD, not to mention the plastic looks cheap, hopefully im wrong.

never mind its a prototype, forget everything i said

that sound like a great campaing, but it most likely will fail, we had install parties for years and the marketshare havent moved too much.
i know its different now with proton and etc but i dont think that will be enough, one of the biggest issue, i saw a lot of people try linux and give up in the past, its not just installing, instaling is just the first step we need to ensure that they will stay on linux, we have to provide helpdesk until people learn how to take care of thenselves to not need helpdesk anymore and to teach others as well, that is the biggest challenge, otherwise we will just make a lot of people hate linux.
even if we dont manage to convert people to linux, at least we have to make sure they are wiling to give a second chance for it in the future, when things improve and the issues they had that made then give up were probabaly already adressed .
