TUXEDO recently revealed two more AMD Ryzen laptops

Quoting: cameronboschUnfortunately, I don't think either of these Tuxedo laptops are all that impressive for a few reasons, especially when compared to Framework's offerings:

<snip>

4. The Tuxedo Laptops are pretty much DOA outside of the EU and the UK, as they only offer ISO layouts, while the Netherlands and everywhere outside of the EU and the UK use ANSI, which Tuxedo does not offer on these laptops. Not to mention how expensive the shipping costs are outside of Europe, so they may as well not exist outside of the EU.

<snip>
Whenever I see articles about Tuxedo laptops, there is always a very quick reply saying, "they're rubbish, use Framework." but usually this is what is actually comes down to - you are not the target audience.

This very point in your list, is the very reason that many people do want Tuxedo gear. Sure, Tuxedo is DOA (hyperbole notwithstanding) outside of their target markets, but it works the other way around too.

I don't know many people who would relish the idea of having to RMA from Europe to the USA. I don't know what their repair/warranty policy is (they say 'limited warranty' for Europe) but my wife has had her Tuxedo almost five years. She works in textiles and the fans break down because small fibers gather inside. She is years beyond the warranty period, and they just send us a new fan whenever they start grinding - it arrives within a week.

Sometimes, it isn't meant for you, but it is for other people, if you can take a step back.

Quoting: torhamAre there any laptops targeted at Linux users that actually have a good keyboard? This one looks terrbile to me: a lowered key plate, no trackpoint, 10-key pad, iso layout, yuck. I'll keep buying Lenovo until something comes along with a nicer keyboard. While their keyboards have gotten worse over the years they still seem to be the best to me.
They do have a range with mechanical Cherry MX keyboards.

Quoting: JarmerThat pricing sounds pretty good. I've never heard of their flavor of ubuntu, I wonder if it's just pretty vanilla with some branding.
No, they have a lot of (viewpoint notwithstanding) improvements over vanilla, mostly their preference for .debs rather than snap.
They have an FAQ page here with the details [External Link]

Quoting: cameronboschWhat's the point of buying this over the Framework Laptop 16?
Aside from the Framework being ~£500 more for similar config, but no native keyboard layout?

Looks like Valve will sell refurbished Steam Decks

Quoting: ssj17vegetaAren't the prices, like, very high for refurbished items ?
I thought the same. I just bought a new (refurbished) Google Pixel 6 Pro for £260, just under half the price of a brand new one.

At these prices, I wouldn't consider it - I'd be looking closer to £320 as reasonable for the 512 model.

I presume to ensure Occulus Quest compatibility on as many devices as possible - they will be selling something down the line, for sure.

I am so glad for the UI scaling! That's a big win for me.

Roblox intentionally blocking Linux with Wine in their new update

Quoting: legluondunetDevelopers don't want Linux users to play his game, just don't play his game and advertise it.
His game is not important, we have today enough games to play on Linux for more that a human life.
I think you underestimate the potency of peer pressure in 10-year-olds. My daughter has a Windows partition on her laptop, JUST so she can play Roblox. We managed lockdown and remote learning, even over Microsoft Teams, in Linux, but Roblox forced it.

Seems I'll be replaying Half-Life 2 again soon but this time in VR

I wonder how the old HL2 graphics will 'feel' in VR. I was always rather saddened that the HL2 Cinematic Mod didn't run as smoothly on Linux. A massive graphical update would be sweet alongside a VR update.

Quoting: setzer22No wonder why this laptop looked familiar! The chasis for this is identical to the Slimbook PRO X15 I'm using right now! :huh:

This led me down the rabbit hole of research and turns out there's a bunch of laptop manufacturers (including Tuxedo and Slimbook) are selling the same computer from a Chinese manufacturer called TongFang: https://www.hk.tongfangpc.com/thin-g-series-2/ [External Link] (Note that their SSL certificate seems to have expired, so your browser may freak out when you click that link). I've also come to learn System76 is doing a similar thing with a company called Clevo.
<snip>
I don't know about the others, but Tuxedo does have a relationship with their OEM so they feed back into the BIOS for updates. I am pretty sure there's more going on that just sticking a different logo on the lid.

Flathub to verify first-party apps and allow developers to collect monies

Quoting: BlackBloodRumI know this goes against everything the linux community is pushing for at the minute, but it's my opinion and my choice.
I'm not sure if it is what, "the Linux community," is pushing, rather the vocal minority of 'value added' OS developers.
People with a financial interest speaking for us and, in many instances, not giving us a choice.

My hope is that there will always be some distros who stick to the package managing way, probably Debian and Arch, but we all know Ubuntu will get rid of .deb for anything outside of the core system as soon as they can!
