You might try Insurgency or Ballistic Overkill. They're really good. As for that DOOM itch, I find that Shadow Warrior 2013 does a pretty good job.

This would allow similar (if not, better) benefits to Gallium 9+Wine, but would work across graphics hardware vendors/drivers, as opposed to being exclusive to the Mesa-based Nouveau and Radeon drivers.

But folks these endless upgrade cyles and delays for new kernels, drivers, software - you want new graphics drivers faster w/o adding 3rd party PPAs, but still stable: Since a few years now there are Linux Distros with rolling releases - perfect for gaming and time saving
