Wine compatibility layer sees a 5.16 development release
29 Aug 2020 at 1:16 pm UTC Likes: 11

I've re-tested this 5.16 + mfplat patches. Can happily confirm the Darksiders 3 intro fmv is now working perfectly, and since this is a UE4 game, most likely it benefits other games too.

Updated list of mfplat related games:

Darksiders 3 (UE4) - WORKING
Shadow Warrior 2 (Custom Engine) - BROKEN
Outward (Unity) - WORKING
Shadows: Awakening (Unity) - WORKING
Darksiders 1 (Custom Engine) - IN TESTING BROKEN

EDIT: Darksiders 1 fails to launch entirely when the mfplat patches are applied, works fine with a vanilla Wine build. Also tried a new build with the mfplat patches from github commit f6495b2 but to no avail.

Stadia Pro gets 6 free games for September, with 3 leaving

I think Devs are more inclined to release on Stadia rather than the normal desktop for various reasons:

- Less expenses on support tickets since devs only have to target a specific set of hardware and distro (hiring and training staff might also be a contributing factor).

- Companies such as EA, Ubisoft, Rockstar....etc won't have to port their clients (UPlay/Origin etc) to Linux and this is probably a big plus, otherwise providing a Linux download would prove complicated (imagine asking less tech savvy Linux users to install Wine to play a native game ~ confusion??), Stadia does away with all of that.

- Linux marketshare is low, devs might have no issue porting, but the ones up higher probably think the revenue will not meet their costs/expectations (I feel this applies more to large companies since indies seem to be more Linux friendly).

I don't believe that developing and porting to Linux is the problem, especially with Vulkan around. It's the same old cycle where Linux is not very popular on the desktop so devs don't target it much and in turn refusing to help it grow.

These are of course my thoughts, I could be wrong.

Quoting: berarma
Quoting: Avehicle7887Been thinking about getting a Logitech wheel. Anyone know what's the support like in Wine?
Most Logitech wheels are well supported but...

G920:
+ It has the most complete firmware, all the effects are implemented in the hardware.
- You might need to update the firmware to fix some bugs and you'll need Windows for that.
- The Linux driver has an issue with games sending effects updates at high rates. I guess the driver in Windows drops commands to stay in synch with the game without glitches but the Linux driver queues the updates and creates enormous lags in the FFB. I've heard that ACC (after pausing the game) and ETS2/ATS without VSync can be affected.
- Lack of settings and emulation modes. Only the rotation range can be tweaked.

G29/G27/G25/...:
+ Besides setting the rotation range it can emulate older models and combine brake/accelerator pedals.
- With the default Linux driver most effects aren't supported and some games will have incomplete or missing FFB (ETS2/ATS for now and some Proton/Wine games).
- It has the same issue than the G920 when effects are updated very fast.

G29/G27/G25/... with driver new-lg4ff:
+ Supported effects are almost on par with the G920. The inertia effect is still unsupported and the friction effect is seemingly not working properly but these are seldom used.
+ Effect updates at high rates are managed correctly and don't cause any lag nor performance problems.
+ It has settings for fine tunning the FFB and combining clutch/accelerator pedals.
- Currenlty, it has to be installed manually and it's only maintained by me.

G923: I don't know.

Proton had some serious FFB bugs up to version 4.11-10 (I think). It works fine now. I don't know what's the status of the FFB in Wine. If it doesn't work already patches might be on their way. DR2 at least needs a recent kernel (maybe 5.8?) for the FFB to work.

The new-lg4ff driver: https://github.com/berarma/new-lg4ff [External Link].
I came across your github a few days ago prior to this thread. My current local choices are between the G29 and the G920, of which I think I'll go with the G29.

I've prepared the kernel and loaded your module in advance to make sure I don't run into any bad surprises (hopefully).

Thank you for your work

Wine 5.15 is out with XACT work and Direct Input improvements
15 Aug 2020 at 1:27 pm UTC Likes: 7

Also to address the elephant in the room, this weekend's Wine Staging 5.15 release comes in with Media Foundation Platform (mfplat) support. For those new to it, this component adds FMV support to many games in Wine, particularly games using Unreal Engine and Unity.

Tested a few games:

Shadow Warrior 2 (custom engine) - Still no FMV's (terminal also throws errors pointing to gstreamer).
Outward (Unity) - FMVs working.
Shadows Awakening (Unity) - FMVs working.

Also tried Darksiders 1 and 3 however both are not running with 5.15 for some unknown reason.

The surprises with Wine related news don't end here. This week the Wine staging team have also added the Media Foundation patchset (mfplat) to the list: https://github.com/wine-staging/wine-staging/commit/af56d3821a32c84305fcc55b03b7ece4e1f7b3d9 [External Link]

My experiences of Valve's VR on Linux
12 Aug 2020 at 8:31 pm UTC

Nice article, I've been interested in VR for a while, the issue though is that it seems way too focused solely around Steam on Linux. Has anyone actually tried playing games on VR without Steam?

This may ruffle some feathers but I don't like Steam and having to depend on such a platform to run VR isn't my cup of tea. I would welcome any suggestions for a "game client agnostic" method.

Challenging sci-fi action RPG Hellpoint is now available

Quoting: DaiKaiser93I'm trying to run the GOG version on EndeavourOS and I get:
Running Hellpoint
Set current directory to /home/daikaiser93/Storage/GOG/Hellpoint/game
Found path: /home/daikaiser93/Storage/GOG/Hellpoint/game/Hellpoint.x86_64
./start.sh: line 16: 117614 Aborted (core dumped) ./"Hellpoint.x86_64"
Anyone know what it could be?
I've been trying to run the Pre-Alpha demo and I get a similar error. I've attempted a few fixes but nothing so far.

For a better idea of why it's not running, open up ".config/unity3d/Cradle Games/Hellpoint/Player.log". It's probably a library issue somewhere.
