What have you been playing recently? We've been tinkering with a Raspberry Pi 4

My gaming time has been cut in half ever since I got a new puppy. Yesterday I took my system apart for the bimonthly dust cleanup, and also updated my distro to the latest point release.

Today I'm going to make an image of my HDD as a backup and then I don't know what's next. :)

Stadia Connect July 2020 - what's coming and new announcements
14 Jul 2020 at 11:26 pm UTC Likes: 4

So far devs have done nothing but treat Stadia as some form of "Console platform" - as in Devs know which hardware and drivers to target for their games, which API's to use, the OS will be the same just like on a console or Windows PC and are aware users will probably contact Google not them for issues. Also in their minds, users will be running Stadia, not the Linux based streaming tech behind it (only people like us will see it differently) so they got nothing to worry about.

In their corporate minds, offering a Linux desktop version of their game would mean additional resources spent in porting their launcher to a different platform as well as supporting it (and probably train or hire staff that speaks Tux-ian). I'd wager they also take in consideration the lame excuse of "multiple distros".

On one hand I can imagine myself in their shoes, in the IT company where I work, we never install Linux unless specifically requested. I'm the only person among the staff who knows his way around the OS, and our clients are not tech savvy so we'd end up with job re-entries and wasting time reformatting to Windows.

If a company is to expand though, sometimes you need to take some risks and a leap of faith.

NVIDIA 450.57 is out for Linux with DLSS and NGX, Image Sharpening plus more

In their own way Nvidia's Linux support is pretty good, and I've been mostly trouble free. There are however a few things which affect me and I also dislike, nominally having to re-install the driver after a kernel update (and I do those a lot), then there's the occasional issue with the driver refusing to install on latest kernels (my Nvidia system is still at kernel 5.5.19 cause of that).

Having said that, I can feel myself leaning towards an AMD GPU in the future. My secondary system is running with the RX 5500XT, it performs great and I have no issues whatsoever with it. Happily running Kernel 5.7.8 + Mesa 20.1.3.

In case anyone's wondering about Vulkan in this release, this version comes with Vulkan spec up to 1.2.133. Whereas with the Beta driver (currently 440.66.17) Vulkan is at 1.2.145.

Started the first game in the Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky series, which has been sitting in my library since the day I bought it. I like it enough to say that eventually I'll end up buying the rest of the games in the series.

Wine 5.12 is out - better RawInput and WebSocket API support

Quoting: tpau
Quoting: Avehicle7887I hope the Staging release will bring back esync/fsync support, it has been disabled for some time now and I've stuck to Wine 5.8 since some games perform better.
According to https://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-devel/2020-July/169359.html [External Link]

NOTE: Currently the esync patchset has been disabled until it can be
rebased.
Thanks for the link.

I just got home and found out the hard way by digging into the staging patches, the esync definitions file has the "Disabled: true" flag.

Wine 5.12 is out - better RawInput and WebSocket API support
3 Jul 2020 at 11:16 pm UTC

Quoting: TheRiddickApparently Cyberpunk 2077 will be DX12 exclusive. Could be a issue for running it under Proton as the DX12 component is very early in development still, and no word on RTX features working under that. Windows wins again, :(
DX12 support (vkd3d) is not in a bad condition, I tried a few games with it - Deus Ex Mankind Divided, Control and Metro Exodus which worked fine. Performance is inferior to DXVK though, so maybe it will be playable at launch but with a performance hit.

One line in the changelog that caught my eye: Xanadu-next: Multicolored rainbow textures

I remember this issue being present for a very long time. Maybe it's finally time to buy this game the next time it goes on sale.

Supraland stops supporting Linux shortly after leaving GOG entirely
27 Jun 2020 at 2:05 pm UTC Likes: 3

I could forgive the dev for not able to support Linux and opt users to use Wine/Proton. However, delisting the game from GOG was the last straw for me, I contacted GOG support at which point they've returned the money in wallet funds.

Shame though, the game was fun when I played it.

Managed to finish off Metro: Exodus today, it was a joyride all the way through. Started the DLC "Sam's Story" which picks up right after the main game ends.

I don't know what's next but I need a change of genre, most likely I'll start the first game in the 'Trails in the Sky' series.
