DoomRL or 'DRL' as it's now called has gone open source

That said, it's true that you're still not exactly "forced" to defend it and you're also free to grant an explicit permission which I think would've been a good thing to do in a case like this one. With "Doom" you could also talk about whether or not the trademark has been granted on a word that's too generic like we saw with Wasteland earlier but in the case of DoomRL that line of argument isn't so convincing because the game is obviously referencing the Doom brand.

Quoting: MyeulCAs @liamdawe and @m2mg2 pointed it out, they don't have to. But it's well within their rights to do so.While your link is at least on the correct area of legislation -- this is *not* about copyright law, it's about trademark law -- using a trademark of a video game brand for your own derivative video game is simply not the same thing as including a trademark in an article critizing the holder of that trademark. The latter falls below fair use [External Link] while the first does not. Failing to defend your copyright doesn't cause you any issues when later seeking to defend it in another case but failing to enforce your trademark might [External Link]. I believe the reason is that in the case of trademarks you are able to defend yourself on the basis of laches [External Link]. Genericization of a trademark is also a real threat although I'd say it's a real concern only in very few cases.
I will repost the Eff link I put in the comments last time :

It's an interesting and not too long read, especially by lawyers' standards.
Disclaimer: IANAL
That's nice to see them going open source, I could see myself contributing some day (So many open source projects... :D)

Quoting: GuestWon't buy a new x86-CPU until they remove their microcode. Why exactly? CPUs have had microcode basically forever and you've been able to upload new revisions for a long, long time.

Quoting: CodeEyeHe said "from a Linux PC". TrinusVR is Windows only.Quoting: InverseTelecineWhat I really want is an option to stream VR content from a Linux PC to the likes of Cardboard or GearVR using phones/tablets. I have a set up right now that I'm pretty happy with using a Samsung refurbished tablet (so no cellular contract) and a Homido VR goggle set that is big enough to fit the tablet. Works great and cost me about $250 for everything. I don't know of anything that can match that price for VR right now. The problem is all phone VR games are junk, and all the streaming from PC software I know of is windows only. Hopefully this will be an option soon, because I won't be able to afford Oculus/Vive anytime soon.http://trinusvr.com/ [External Link]
seriously though, google is a thing.
and i use this program it works great.

Make sure you play 'Gone Home' this weekend, as it's free for a short time

I don't think this is really a free weekend. Seems more similar to something like Dirt 3 being free for a limited time. After all it's a download and you'll get the files permanently with no extra effort. I doubt they have anything disabling it afterwards.
GOG Connect has new games for you to grab from Steam for free if you already own them

I like GOG but for me the lack of Galaxy for GOG stops me from buying them only because of convenience. I've become too accustomed to the ease of using Steam so I pretty much only go for GOG when getting something not on Steam. I'd be very likely to get everything on GOG if they had a functional Linux client and I'm not making any kind of a stand out of principle here.
Linux overall market-share percentage falls on Steam in October

One of my pet peeves about mainstream media is that they like to report on the results of polls as if ones that show changes that are within the margin of error have any significance at all. This article seems to guesstimate that it's 0.065 percentage points for the Steam hardware survey: http://cheesetalks.net/steamsurvey.php [External Link]
If his assumptions are correct a change of 0.04% is completely meaningless like you're suggesting but his conclusion would seem to suggest that surprisingly small changes will be worth talking about.

There definitely are some better games on the Vive but there are also tons of wave shooters and this one seems like a one that stands out among those. There's also tons of crap on the Vive so I'm willing to bet this is still in at least something like the top 10% unless you really happen to dislike/have grown extremely bored of wave shooters.

I find it likely that a nice free software developer is going to use his own time to reverse engineer their file format changes and then you'll be able to use a source port again. Pretty scummy thing to drop the Linux/Mac and demand full price for a bit of additional content in a package that actually breaks some things and hasn't apparently been that lovingly crafted for sure...
Looks like VR support for Linux will be shown off at SteamDevDays this week, about time

Awesome, this'll make me more interested in the Vive over Rift if that's what it's for.
