OpenSAGE, an early WIP game engine for Command & Conquer: Generals adds Linux support

This opens up a possibility for Emperor: Battle for Dune and Command and Conquer Renegade to get native Linux ports. Both games used the C&C Generals engine. Hell C&C3 and Red Alert 3 both used the SAGE engine after it was upgraded. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SAGE_(game_engine) [External Link] )

Intel has confirmed their plans for a discrete GPU to release in 2020

Here in Australia, my salary is pretty average at $4000/month, an NVIDIA 1060 GTX 6gb costs $499. I suspect Intel will struggle to make a decent GPU. There are patents covering tons of aspects of GPU development and most of them are owned by NVIDIA and Microsoft (acquired from SGI). I think the biggest threat to NVIDIA/Intel/AMD is actually the Chinese electronics industry. I am very curious to see if chips like the Sunway Taihu Light supercomputer uses will become available to the western markets for consumer PCs/Corporate servers.

PSVR is running on Linux with OpenHMD and OpenHMD-SteamVR

Why didn't I use HDMI Passthrough? Because my monitor is a 30" dell which hasn't got HDMI input... dual-link DVI only (It's not even capable of taking a HDMI input signal which is standard DVI-I It will only take a DVI-D signal, it's 11 years old). BTW When SteamVR is running, the 30" screen was being blanked out by Steam's compositor. Also the only capture rig I have that's capable of capturing a HDMI signal, is downstairs and stuck in a 4RU server chassis. The OpenHMD project and libPSVR have had the PSVR running under Linux for over a year. Really it's been engine implementors that have been slow to uptake the support. There's been too little standardization in VR which has held it back. For example, Descent 1/2 have had VR support since they were first released but haven't had any of the new APIs for VR integrated into the engine yet. Most games are picking HTC or Occulus and not bothering to implement the other models. The whole scene is a mess. OpenHMD needs to get promoted more as the Open Source VR standard, it also needs some more work so proper positional tracking works on all headsets that have it.

Hi Guys,

I made the videos in the article. The support is very undercooked at this stage. You can turn your head and the PSVR gyros are working, but actual positional tracking is non-existant so my head ends up almost at floor height. It makes for an interesting experience haha. There are still a lot of issues with SteamVR and controller support. The system actually reports a missing gamepad.so driver file in the logs so I think it'll be a while until there's something usable. I'd really like to see someone add OpenHMD support to Freespace 2, as well as Descent 1/2.

Turns out Linux market share on Steam did not go back up in December

Content is king and at the moment there's not enough AAA content to make me bother firing Steam up again. The other problem is that AAA gaming in general has been pretty lacklustre outside of the Playstation 4 platform.

The PS3 emulator 'RPCS3' has a new development report out, progress is great

Yay. I am so ridiculously happy about this. My house got broken into two years ago and they stole over 50 PS3 games. I didn't have insurance and was screwed. This will let me replay all my old games without having to re-buy everything. Very very happy to see this news.

Neverwinter Nights Enhanced Edition is coming from Beamdog, Linux support confirmed

Back in the day I hacked in BINK support by hacking libSDL. I made it so you preload a custom SDL that forces the bink commandline player into fullscreen mode and deletes the cursor. Combined with nwmovies it does the job. Native Bink playback.

Overload is the original Descent developers from Parallax. Descent: Underground is some guys who paid to license the rights to Descent from Interplay. Overload's gameplay is closer to Descent 1/2/3.

The NWN sourcecode does exist last I heard. I'd like them to fix the videos and actually recompile the engine. The sad truth of NWN2 is that they cancelled the Linux port when they chose to make an Xbox port of the game, which was then later cancelled. The engine hasn't had Linux support since then. There won't be a NWN2 Linux release.
