Oh, that is lovely. I keep looking at the game longingly, that's me one step closer to finally getting it.

Quoting: PublicNuisanceA good first step but to get me interested in even a discount purchase they also have to banish the need for a Bethesda.net account.
Oh, is that actually required for this game? At least in the Unity engine ports of Doom and Doom II, you can cancel out of the prompt and it'll never pester you about it again.
From the Steam page for Doom Eternal:

"Requires 3rd-Party Account: Bethesda.net (Supports Linking to Steam Account)"

https://store.steampowered.com/app/782330/DOOM_Eternal/ [External Link]

I don't know if I can opt out but I won't be taking the chance.
You have to not have internet when you start the game to bypass the 3-rd party account. It then works fine. Annoying.

I got the game to look at ray traced reflections on SD back when they enabled support. Despite the drm and online account activation it plays very, very well. I'm sure I'll get around to it sometime.

Apple runs an app store on their phones and one on their computers. The store on the phone removes old software regularly. They break APIs all the time and software (including games) needs to be maintained and updated constantly to remain usable on new os versions. As far as I can tell they run their computer store the same way.

Gaming is huge on their phones, possibly on their computers as well, but it's not the kind of gaming we think of. Their approach perhaps makes sense for general software and throwaway phone endless runners or farm sims, but "traditional" games (that get updated for a limited time) do not fit this model at all.

I, personally, treat my games very seriously and want to be able to keep playing them after years and years. The Apple ecosystem does not allow for this.

They obviously don't care about Steam and games Mac users buy there. It makes them no money and they made a lot of them useless when they dropped 32-bit support and surely will again as they obsolete APIs.

The only thing they're interested in is keeping the money coming in, which in turn forces developers into constant revenue stream models like subscriptions, micro transactions or ads. And Apple clearly supports gaming in this scope.

Steam is having a festival for Visual Novels until August 14th

I'm going through some rough times in life now and visual novels are basically the only thing I "play". I just don't have the energy to overcome hardships in games for the moment.

I have some money in my Steam wallet from a recent refund, but not for long, not for long.

I'm sure to get Higurashi 6 soon, even though it's not in the sale. I got the first 5 parts in some bundle years and years ago and started reading last year and am now nearing the end of 5 and I can't imagine just stopping there, I need more. It's so unbelievably slow to get going, but once it does... oh my.

Thanks for the various recommendations all, there are a few I hadn't heard about. As for boobies... I like boobies.

I’m glad the silly stripes on folders are gone. A small thing for sure, but it was a very weird decision.

Mint is a very solid distro, I enjoy using it for my non-gaming needs.

Quoting: damarrinI am sort of curious if I can get the new Zelda running well on the SD. I've been playing it these past few days and I was vividly reminded how uncomfortable the Switch is. It's fine with the controllers detached on the TV, but handheld... eugh.
Yeah that's my biggest problem with my Switch, how flat it is - absolutely terrible ergonomics. Gives me serious hand cramp if I try it. My Switch is an original model too, so I should technically have no problem using it for the needed bits in yuzu emulation if I wanted to. Which I will admit has been tempting me more recently.
I've been playing TOTK on my SD and am about 40 hours in. It's been a blast, especially without the hand pain I get from playing on switch. It's not a stable 30 by all means but it's absolutely playable and patches like these keep coming to get closer to that.

There's even a mod that changes all the button prompts to SD ones [External Link] and one that sets the game to 16:10 [External Link].
Aaargh! That's my weekend sorted, then. My Switch is a launch model as well, so I'll be able to keep as close to legal as is possible.

Quoting: legluondunetNintendo is an innovative company and produces user-friendly games, switch emulators must be costing them a lot of money.
I'm mostly curious as to how nintendo has innovated in the past decade and even since the release of the switch. Also yes bleem was definitely a thing and its legal precedent is still massively important.
The Switch was a huge innovation in itself. The Steam Deck is a complete rip off of that, as are all the Aya and other devices. Add to that that they make the best games and they don't need to be innovating any more in the near future.

I agree BTW they're a backwards and customer hostile company, but it's their IP and they can do anything they want with it.
I am not certain the Switch can be given credit for being innovative here, last I heard the Switch was the hardware from the Nvidia Shield Portable after Shield died on the vine.
I'm not talking about the hardware, Nintendo doesn't compete on power. I'm talking about the form factor and having one console that's both portable and docked to a TV, running the exact same games with varying power depending on how it's being used at a specific time.

Before the Switch handheld consoles had to be tiny like the PSP or Vita AND only ran games specifically built for them, or some monstrosities like the Nvidia Shield or the GPD Win devices. Nintendo basically came up with the "modern" portable console design sort of like Apple defined what a smartphone should look like with the iPhone.
