why 64-bit linux client
The idea is that if Steam is 64-bit (but still able to launch all those 32-bit games that will never be updated) then distros (and users) can drop all those (poorly secured) 32-bit packages that are no one wants to (or even really does) maintain.

The reasons for Ubuntu's (premature) desire to drop the maintenance and packaging of 32-bit packages at the same time as they dropped their 32-bit install images are still true, it's just that the infrastructure for ruining 32-bit proprietary applications on an entirely 64-bit system weren't yet up to the task. Without a significant push, it'll never be up to the task, and Valve dragging their feet on removing their dependency on 32-bit packages delays that push.

As I understand it.
Will still need those (poorly secured) 32-bit packages for games regardless so no thats not the reason per say but will still be better for the client to be in 64 bit

Quoting: tohurSteamDeck=1 only applies if you are using a Nvidia GPU I think as my game launches just fine without it. also highly suggest using gamemode with gamemoderun %command% . I got this thing included with the GPU I bought over the summer so if you do not own the game yet I would wait TBH for a sale or after some updates because the game is poorly optimized on PC as it runs like crap on both Linux and Windows for me
I have a rx6600xt and yesterday I tried the demo. It doesn't launch.
I'm sure with this parameter it uses dx11 or a version with less features with dx12 (wine can emulate/adapt many dx12 features but not all).
It's not worth it 80€ for a game. For me I think 60€ it's the maximum for a AAA game.
We are on a recession plus inflation and they are increasing the price.
For me it's a pass even if it were a native game.
Hope they fix it for the next update. It's not complicated to make a function if(linux) then, else other.
Funny considering I own a 6600 XT and do not need the SteamDeck=1 idk weird

Ubisoft fixed The Division 2 on Steam Deck and Linux desktop

Quoting: sarmadWhen you say it now works, do you mean online multiplayer works as well, or only the single player mode?
If online multiplayer works as well, and it was a tiny and quick fix, then what excuse do other developers have?
None if they are using Battle eye or EAC for anti-cheat as they both support Proton and Linux

State of the industry: MSI offered a chance to win the ability to buy a GPU

The current state of the GPU market will crash the PC gaming market if this goes on another generation or so.. Nvidia, AMD and all the board partners need to get their act together to be frank

Quoting: tohurThis doesn't make any sense at all .. Valve has NOTHING to do with Havok.. Microsoft owns Havok.. so this story is a bit off and is pretty much a lie from the leaker.. Pretty sure this is a Inside job as highly doubt Valve gives access to their assets to ANYONE even if they are a partner other then the assets that are already included with the source engine
To clarify for you: previously if you used Source to make things, you needed to pay a fee which was waived back in 2021 [External Link] when Valve made a deal with Microsoft on it.
Ah well guess that makes sense as Microsoft acquired Havok in 2015. but still to me doesn't make no sense valve were putting out all their assets other then whats already included in source when you download it. IDK if they did this leak is on them.

Quoting: tohurUltimately this is where SteamOS will lead us.. Proper fully supported Linux ports that are not half baked and not handed off to porting houses but developed for Linux from get go. still going be some years before this is the norm but if Valve pushes SteamOS to the same heights of Steam itself thats where we are going. For now Proton is just a means to an end which is pushing SteamOS/Linux growth to the point there won't be the excuse that Linux is not a big enough market
I'm not sure about this. I'm into point and click, and I cannot remember running out of good games running natively on Linux in the last years. I think the experience is differently for other genres (like non-indie action games?) - and might stay that way?
If Valve grows SteamOS properly it get to the point of proper ports of everything just about. AAA publishers follow the money and if there is money to be had you best bet they will move to that point.. Indie devs mostly make games out of passion and typically push their games to as many platforms as they can not for the money but for as many people as possible to be able to play their games.. money is just a side effect of their passion projects
As usual, the question ultimately comes down to: How many Steam Decks sold?
If it's enough, the good scenario happens. If it's not, it's just a step in the right direction.
I think Valve has more plans for SteamOS then Steam Deck. So then the question is what are those plans and will Valve execute them properly and not repeat the steam machine situation
