Developer of Banished writes up his thoughts on Linux

I wonder if his approach will make it difficult (or impossible) to use a Steam controller. Will Steam itself even handle it correctly?

Also, regarding his troubles installing Linux, I've occasionally had similar trouble installing Windows on machines. I was only able to save them by using CD-ROMs (yes, remember those?) with third-party drivers on them. No OS has 100% out-of-the-box compatibility with all current and future hardware.

Two Worlds: Epic Edition now available for Linux in beta form, uses Wine

Quoting: TheGZeusMissing executable :\

I wasn't that excited, tbh.
I got it cheap a year or two ago, ran it in wine, and my thoughts amounted to "this feels kinda janky, and why is there a first-person mode when combat always switches to third? ...ok, now I guess I went to the wrong area, and now I'm stuck in a death loop. Great."
I love that you used the word "janky" in a sentence. :D I don't know about this game, but you, sir, get 10/10.

Quoting: NyapWait, they ported sleeping dogs? but not for linux?
Hopefully it gets ported to Linux in the future. We've already had Squeenix dip their toes in the Linux poor with Tomb Raider, so hopefully Sleeping Dogs follows in the near future, since part of the work has already been done (translation to OpenGL).
Or maybe they'll just let sleeping dogs lie. You had to know that was coming.

EVERSPACE, a fantastic looking 3D space shooter with roguelike elements coming to Linux

Quoting: Picoboom"Singleplayer Rogue-like gameplay with persistent progression,"

Could someone help me understand this statement? It seems like an oxymoron to me.

Whatever else it might imply, I've always understood that the term rogue-like means perma-death will be involved.

When I see "perma-death," I think "gormless-tedium," and skip on to the next game description. But Everspace's claim to persistent progression gives me hope there might be more here than meets the eye.

So "Rogue-like gameplay with persistent progression." Any ideas?
It probably means it will still have permadeath, but you'll get to keep some of your items, skills, etc. Personally, that seems to take the fun out of space games. Think about how long it takes to get from one sector of a solar system to another. Then, bam! You die. Are you going to have to travel that distance all over again because you're not allowed to save? It just takes some of the freedom and exploration out of it when you're constantly starting over. But I reckon this is not that type of game anyway. It'll probably be a quick shoot-em-up kind of game that you play in small spurts rather than hours at a time.

Quoting: MuffinmanIf this game brings the same fast-paced joy that Star Raiders on the 5200 Atari brought to me in the 80s, then it's a winner in my book. Far too many space game developers are pushing for realistic physics, complicated gameplay, and too much depth. Some of us just want to jump in, blow some stuff up, and leave in a 20 to 30 minute session. The Star Raiders of the 1980s gave you some depth, but not at the expense of fast paced action-packed gameplay.
LOL See, I'm one of those people who wants more depth. I'd like to be able to explore, mine, etc. in an open world rather than just dog-fighting, dying, rinse, repeat. I don't really need another Strike Suit Zero. But hey, I hope this game gives you what you want. It's always nice to have options.

I certainly love space games. I just wish it wasn't "rogue-like".

Quoting: lucinossupporting only closed source drivers, is of course better than nothing, but is should never considered a job well done that does not need fix.

This example demonstrate why.
It didn't run all that well on closed source drivers anyway. I found the framerate drops made it unplayable.

Atari Vault released for Windows, Linux build coming soon

Isn't this the same publisher as RollerCoaster Tycoon World? It sounds like Atari has some serious internal and external communication breakdowns.

Quoting: Mountain ManNot just AAA titles, we need big players like Blizzard and EA to come aboard. I would especially like to see native Linux builds of Diablo 3, Hearthstone, and Heroes of the Storm. I love what companies like Feral and Aspyr have done, and Valve, of course, but they can't do it all.
Both EA and Activision are very greedy. Don't expect them to join Linux world any time soon.
They're not human beings, despite what some U.S. laws might say. :) Therefore, they can't be greedy. They're emotionless corporations, and the driving factor behind corporations is profit. All it takes is an executive with some foresight willing to take a risk on something like Linux, which won't be immediately profitable. In the absence of someone like that, a corporation is going to stick with whatever makes it money.

As Zelox suggested above, it's going to take a lot of patience and hope before Linux will become a competitive gaming platform. Maybe it never will. We just have to wait and support companies that make an effort to sell games for it, but there's little point in having ill feelings toward those companies that choose not to, including Microsoft, because it's not personal at all.
