Racing game 'DRAG' with impressive visuals enters Early Access on August 11

I don't do early access, but once this is fully released I'll be all over it, it looks like tons of fun.

What have you been playing recently and what's your pick this weekend?

I've been playing Desperados 3 via Proton. A native Linux version is inbound, but I got impatient. The game gets hung up on the loading screen when it tries to play startup videos, but if you just rename (what I did), move, or delete the folder that has the videos then it starts and plays just fine, on my system, at least. Awesome game. If you played Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun, or any of the classic Desperados or Commandos games, then you know what to expect.

Quoting: razing32Also , that dynamite in the trailer should have killed the protagonist ten times over :P
That was my thought as well. The protagonist lit the dynamite and took like 3 steps back and I'm like "RUN!!!"

Anyway, I'm not going to dismiss it on the grounds of that, nor the 2006 graphics. I'll check out reviews when it releases, hopefully they are positive.

I've been playing X4:Foundations. I'm a long time fan of the series, I've been playing since X2:The Threat and have loved all the games except X: Rebirth. I'm slowly building up my fleet so that I can eventually wipe the Xenon from the galaxy. I'm currently sitting at a destroyer (poorly equipped because everything for that size ship is so expensive), 3 frigates, 3 fighters, 3 scouts, and 2 freighters. I have 2 stations generating money for me, I really need to expand that to supercharge my economy.

This is probably the closest we'll ever get to Hellraid being an actual game we can play. Better than nothing, I guess. I was super excited when it got announced forever ago...

Some thoughts on Linux gaming in 2019, an end of year review
16 Dec 2019 at 12:42 am UTC Likes: 4

Depending on how you look at it, this was arguably the best year for Linux gaming ever. On the purely native side of things, this was a lean year for sure. However, Proton has made SPECTACULAR strides in making gaming via compatibility layer incredibly pain free. A really high number of games released this year and continue to release that provide an "out of the box" experience within days of launch or even from day 1. For example, Code Vein (great game btw) worked beautifully out of the box from day 1. Great performance, no hoops to jump through, if that little pop up box in Steam didn't come up the first time I started the game telling me that it would launch via a compatibility tool, it would have been the same experience as a native game.

Keep up the great work Valve, Code Weavers, and everybody else contributing to Proton, DXVK, D9VK, wine, wine-staging, etc. Y'all are doing yeoman's work.

Quoting: BotonoskiReally seems like they're rushing this out the door as quickly as possible when they're adding to their launch roster so soon before release. Really ought to make sure things are set in stone before you announce them in my opinion.
Yeah, but Black Friday is right around the corner. This is the busiest shopping season of the year. They'll push whatever slapped together garbage they can out the door to get that sweet sweet money then worry about the backlash and making things work later.

What have you been playing recently and what do you think about it?

I've been playing Code Vein via Proton. It's anime Dark Souls. I like it so far, Bamco seems to have a good grasp on what makes the Souls formula work and the game has enough special abilities to spice things up.

A little look over ProtonDB reports for Steam Play in September 2019

Proton is amazing. Code Vein was working, and working well, out of the box on many people's systems DAY 1. I can confirm this on my Intel/Nvidia system. I bought the game 2 or 3 days after it came out and it works great out of the box, no workarounds necessary. I did encounter a visual glitch during character creation where hairstyles would layer on top of the preset default you chose rather than replace it, so to get around that I just used a short buzz cut preset and layered on top of that, though I don't know if that's a Linux specific glitch. Regardless, once in game that goes away and everything shows correctly. As an aside, this game has one of the best character creators this side of Saints Row.

Anyway, the game runs great, no issues (outside of the aforementioned graphical glitch during character creation), and with very good performance. I can't compare to Windows, but I'm running at 1440p on a laptop variant GTX 1080 with graphical settings nearly maxed (turned off film grain and motion blur because yuck, and turned anti aliasing down to medium, whatever that means, everything else is max) and everything is running smooth as a baby's bottom.

A big thank you to GabeN and everybody contributing to WINE, DXVK, D9VK, and every other project that makes up Proton. Y'all are doing yeoman's work.

Steam Play Proton 4.11-6 is out with newer DXVK, support for The Surge 2 and GTA 5 launcher fixes

Valve quick on the update as usual. I read somewhere that DXVK 1.4 may yield The Witcher 3 improvements. Maybe they're for AMD users because I'm not sure how much more you can improve performance on my Intel/Nvidia setup. I don't have a Windows partition to compare against, but it runs so well it's gotta be really close to Windows native performance. Anyway, always happy to see progress.
