Knights and Merchants strategy game to return to Linux using Wine, now in beta

Quoting: lucifertdarkWill these people PLEASE stop with the Wine wrappers? it's NOT helping get decent games on Linux as it gives developers an excuse to not bother as they can just say "run it in Wine" when we ask for a port.

I REFUSE to use Wine, it sucks & should never be used to port games to Linux.
Totally disagree. Wine in current state is perfect for bringing old titles to our beloved platform. As long as licencing of all the middleware used in the game allows to use Wine, I would love to have as many old games ported this way as possible. Why? Because more classic titles we have, there are less reasons for people to stay on Windows. Just keep in mind that some old games have their issues on newer versions of Windows as well (I remember some time ago I wasn't able to run Worms Armageddon on Windows 7 (now it runs ok on my girlfriend machine win Windows 7) while at the same time I was able to play it fluently on Wine.

Using Wine for old titles if it is seamless for the user is a right path.

Quoting: TheBossOld games like this wouldn't even be worth porting as it would probably make a loss. So, it's either we don't get it at all, or we get it with Wine.

Wine is an amazing bit of software for old games.
Totally agree.

Knights and Merchants strategy game to return to Linux using Wine, now in beta

Quoting: fagnerlnExcuse my ignorance, but these games released as "WINE port" generate a new prefix, uses the same prefix installed or use different ways?
Hmm, I don't get the question. Uses the same prefix as what? All the Steam apps that uses wine are provided with it's own Wine in the bundle and it means you actually download the whole Wine prefix. For example on my machine I can go to the local files of the K&M and it is in:
<SteamLibrary>/steamapps/common/Knights and Merchants Historical Version/Wine/prefix/

Anyway, on my machine K&M correctly runs in full screen which was problematic when I was trying to use it through wine prefix installed by my own. However I don't remember if cursor was not changing on Windows if I was hovering over enemy unit (it does not in beta) and unfortunately I was able to alt+tab from game to other window but not able to alt+tab back. When I alt+tab back to the game window, the window is frozen and it is impossible to use it anymore. The same happens when I'm in Big Picture mode and try to open Steam overlay - window with game freezes.

Having that in mind I have to say that bringing old games to Linux through Wine is from my perspective great, because if I have to choose between being not able to play my old game at all, being able to install it on Wine by my own and fight with major issues or have the game bundled with Wine and have all the major issues fixed - I choose the third option. And there are future users to come, that have no knowledge of Wine at all.

However in my opinion issues with Alt+tab and Steam overlay have to be fixed in order to promote from BETA to public release.

You should update this post ASAP, it was confirmed in the thread that it won't be out until next quarter. So April at the earliest.
I am starting to be more and more disappointed with each new information about Rocket League...

Rocket League due on SteamOS & Linux very soon [Updated]

Quoting: wolfyrionAt the end all these Games will be released at the same time and I am gonna freaked out!!! :dizzy:

- Darkest Dungeon
- Rocket League
- Mad Max
- Evolve
- DiRT Rally
- Tomb Raider
- Hurtworld
- Master of Orion
- Street Fighter
No, they won't. I know GDC is going to take place in one 4-8 days from today, but I don't expect anything more than what we had last year - few big titles announced and a year of waiting for them with some titles just being cancelled during that year. Sad, but realistic.

Arma 3 Linux port to update to 1.54 tomorrow, there's more good news too

Quoting: WorMzyIf only they'd properly commit to supporting Linux. I don't want to buy this game while there's a chance they're just gonna pull the rug out from underneath it and drop Linux support.
I imagine considering how far they have gone with it now, even if they dropped Linux support it would have to remain as a playable branch opt-in on Steam.

This is a very positive sign that they are updating it, doing BattlEye and all later too.
What you're saying is in conflict with Samsai's motto:
Quoting: SamsaiMy motto is "DON'T BUY BEFORE IT'S OUT".
Personally I agree with Samsai's more in this topic - I will consider paying for a game only if it is officially on Linux.

Overlord, Overlord: Raising Hell and Overlord II look set for Linux ports soon

I do have all of them in my library (from Codemasters bundle I guess). I will give them a try, and if they turn out to be good and keep me in front of pc for more than 10 hours, then I guess I will provide some money to VP, just to support them for the new port and will give the key to someone in need (maybe my girlfriend, maybe someone from this page, let's see if this happens).

Looks like Homefront: The Revolution might not have a day-1 Linux release
3 Mar 2016 at 11:18 am UTC

Quoting: kit89I look forward to its Linux release.

Any news on Rocket League, was it not meant to be released before the Xbox One version?
@kit89 I have some news - once again Linux users were treated in a very unfair way (In comparison to console gamers [External Link], but according to Rocket League developers - because of Valve.

XCOM 2 patch now live for Linux & SteamOS
27 Feb 2016 at 1:04 pm UTC

Thanks @tuubi, it seems that's it. I gave it a try and I must say it is a nice way to do a benchmark, but for most cases Steam in-game fps counter does the job (without temperature of course).

Anyway, always nice to learn something new.

Quoting: Renzatic Gear
Quoting: Mountain ManI've heard the "engine tweaks" were of questionable value anyway.
Oh, and the red sparkly tint in the shadows [External Link] is still around.
Those values showing FPS, temperature on the cores and your graphic card on the left top corner - what software gives you that information?

SUPERHOT, the time-bending shooter released on SteamOS & Linux, some thoughts
27 Feb 2016 at 9:16 am UTC

I have to say that I agree with most comments regarding "price for hour" ratio. Most of the games I love (which are not necessary super cheap) have much better score in this ratio. For example let's start with some good PS4 games. I've bought Witcher 3 for 40 euro, game gives you approximately 200 hours of fun which is 0.20 euro per hour. GTAV gave me about 40 hours of fun for 40 euro (on sale), which is 1 euro per hour.
From Linux titles:
Witcher 2 gave me 35 hours of fun for 4 euro (when it was released on Linux), which is 0,11 euro/h, Pillars of Eternity (so far) - 55 hours for ~14 euro - 0.25 euro/h so far and this value will decrease, Broforce - 6 euro (on sale) gave me 10 hours of fun, so 0.6 euro/h.

And I know many users bought SW: KOTOR2 for 2.99 euro and I can imagine it is possible to achive much better ratio in this game then any ratio I've mentioned ;).

And while I understand SuperHot is innovative and worth to try, I will buy it when game reaches at least 2.5 euro / h ratio. And it can be achieved either by doing a sale or by providing more content to the game.

P.S. Just for you not to judge me - there are a games that I bought from Feral and did not even play (like Shadow of Mordor or Company of Heroes 2 that costed 25 euro, so I do not buy games on Linux only because they are super cheap ;)
