For those wanting to try out Steam Play, the new Humble Monthly has Yakuza 0

Good thing about these monthly bundles is that when a game appears in a bundle, its trade value suddenly drops. So yesterday I quickly went to barter.vg and made offers to anyone who had newly posted Observer, I made off with the game like a bandit. I would recommend to anyone trading your old unneeded game keys, not only do you get games you actually want to play, you also give a chance to others to play the games that just collect dust in your stash.

I used to be throwing a lot of money on video games despite playing very little, it's only when I started calculating all the money I've been throwing at games that I realized my folly. And since the games these days are generally pricier than few years ago and good bundles are rearer, I'm keeping a better watch over my wallet. I buy a monthly only if in the early unlock is the game I want (as happened with Civilization 6 and Rise of the Tomb Raider), but if the game turns out to be in the hidden part of the bundle, I trade for it afterwards.

Double standards?
Nope. What I liked I would always buy afterwards. Depending on how much I liked it, I might even buy it on smaller discount, get special editions, DLCs, etc. And I would make sure to promote good games as well.

But cheaper games meant I would risk getting more stuff, although I might end up not liking it. That meant I would get to try out more things, while industry gets more of my money overall, seems like a sweet deal for everyone. But now I see games that are over three years old cost 10+ euros on a Steam's biggest sale. Who does that benefit exactly? Whoever really wanted that game has bought it already, you're not generating any new sales with that strategy. Withholding art from people is wrong, developers should care to get their money, but also that their art is available to audiences.

I got to say that I'm greatly disappointed by Steam sales and generally the direction gaming market has been going lately. Not so long ago, aged games were decently priced, indies were bundled together attractively and I was buying way more games than I needed. Good for me, good for the industry, win-win.

But then in their greed developers decided they want to sell Steam keys in bulk to third party stores, key swapping and reselling sites started eating into their revenue, so they now try to squeeze every last cent from their games, prices remain high for way too long, there are no more good bundles and I'm struggling to find a good deal in a Steam winter sale that in the past was easily leaving my wallet dry.

Honestly, I might as well go back to piracy. The whole point of digital game distribution was to provide us with fair value so we don't pirate games, like I quit Popcorn when Netflix came along. But people are ruining a good thing here by getting greedy.

Some thoughts on Linux gaming in 2018, an end of year review

Yes, a bit of a slow year until Proton came and made all the difference. If proton keeps advancing to the point that we can play more than half of the Windows games without issues, I personally don't need anything else to satisfy my gaming needs.

Ah, S2 Games, how much of a mark they left on my life. I used to be avid Savage 2 player back in the days because it was the only game available on Linux that I really liked. Unfortunately, it was not commercially successful, so S2 moved on to HoN, which I played religiously for several years. I was not a very good player though and HoN faced some very tough competition in the rising genre. Then they decided to try to overhaul MOBA games with Strife, which I liked as well, but the MOBA market was already saturated. Strife went nowhere, so they tried to remake Savage, choosing the inferior Savage 1 game for a remake, as it did better financially than Savage 2 that was a better game.

Out of nostalgia, I downloaded HoN client this summer, but it wouldn't install on Ubuntu 18.04. Now it's officially dead as well and I say it was about time to pull the plug. Goodbye S2 Games people and thank you for all the memories.

What makes anybody think that this game will work better using Proton? I've seen Proton reviews for the sequels, they say the games run poorly.

A new Humble Monthly is out and it’s not bad with Cities: Skylines (and DLC) plus MGSV

I only bought two Monthlies so far, one that was perfect for me and the other quite meh. It's this random nature of the bundles that puts me of, but it can somewhat be mitigated by trading unnecessary Steam keys. Here is my profile [External Link], you can contact me if you have something from my wishlist and want something I have in the Tradable section.

The RPG 'INSOMNIA: The Ark' will not be having a same-day Linux release, to be worked on after

Let's not act spoiled, people. If the Linux version is few months late, no harm. They made a promise of simultaneous release, but it was not very probable that they would be able deliver on that. Majority of their target audience is on Windows, they need to take care of that busyness first.

What are you playing this weekend?

Deadlight using Proton. I bought that game years ago as devs said they want to port it to Linux. They never did and it ended up being wasted money. I will get some of it back now through trade cards, the game itself is so-so and visual artefacts don't help me enjoy it.

After that I'm off to Walking Dead and few other worthy games I accumulated before I switched to Linux or were freebies afterwards. In the future I plan purchasing only the white listed Windows games, but might roll a dice on a classic if dirt cheap.

You can get Rise of the Tomb Raider in the current Humble Monthly

What I can figure out is if both offered early unlocks are part of the same monthly bundle, you just choose which one you unlock first? Because I have no interest in the other 3 games, which devalues a bundle for me.
