Windows compatibility layer Wine 7.11 is out now

Quoting: slaapliedjeWould be lovely if the powers that be would update the build in ArcaOS. It is so old it is about the level of where wine was able to load notepad, and not much else! Granted, it isn't like ArcaOS is a 'gaming' OS, but it would be awesome as one, if only to avoid Windows...
With so much still needing to be done, there's not much of an incentive to get Wine to work on some proprietary OS that barely has home users.
Yeah, the 'powers that be' is the ArcaOS / OS/2 Warp community. I don't expect the Wine project or Crossover to do it.

Quoting: eldarionA couple of days ago nobody knew Daggerfall unity gog cut was a thing and we lived our lives happily. GOG and GammerZakh released this pack and now people are offended because there is no Linux version.
Seriously dude, stop this unhelpful attitude. There's just no need for it.
Not offended, just annoyed. It would have been a minimal effort support, instead I've dropped the latest Linux build in the directory, which does make it start up... but can't seem to get any of the mods to show up in the mods screen.

Quoting: slaapliedjeSeriously, GOG should be more multi-platform friendly, especially for something that they have to only put in very minimal effort into.
Not sure of context here - GOG itself is multi-platform by virtue that you just need a web browser to download a game. What are you suggesting GOG do, as opposed to developers and publishers?

Daggerfall "gog cut" wasn't done by GOG, though obviously GOG have permitted some name use.
Sure, but any sort of multi-platform support is pretty random for things. Like Daggerfall, where there is a Linux build out there, even a macOS one, and neither are bundled up on GOG. Funny enough GOG Galaxy has a mac port, I should count in my library (as anecdotal as that would be) and see how many games I have in it that support Mac vs Linux natively, and see whether or not the effort for an official Galaxy app should be something we should have. I'm betting that ratio is pretty close, though my library is likely to favor ports for both, as I buy a lot of DOS games...

Are we going to get a Steam Cut? :P At least then I could use proton instead of messing with Wine or trying to get it to work natively, it would just be tidier.
Well, it's not up to GOG to decide a lot of that, is all I'm saying. Wanting a packaged GNU/Linux native version is one thing, expecting GOG to do it alone is another. GOG doesn't really have the power to say "all platforms or go away" (not even Valve does that). As for GOG Galaxy...yeah, ok, they probably should've, but then GOG _do_ insist that it's not mandatory for a game.

Funnily enough my "messing" with wine has always been wine-vanilla, install dxvk through the provided script, and....that's it. Kind of lets me use all the benefits outside of Steam, and why I might ever entertain the notion of this recent Starship Troopers game (on sale, of course) because it's also available through GOG.
Yeah, it's the lack of managing updates, that is really the only thing you miss when not having the client (can't remember if there are achievements or not, as most of the times I don't care about such things). Ha, just now I was trying to get the update through Heroic Game Launcher and it kept failing, and I couldn't get the game to start there, but then it said I didn't have wine configured.. /me sighs Unfortunately don't have time to mess with it much this morning :P

FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE arrives on Steam — plus it's Steam Deck Verified

Quoting: slaapliedjeAs I grew up on the Ultima series, and never really had a NES, I have not played any of the Final Fantasy games. Even during that era I had a Sega Master System, so Phantasy Star was what I played (though I never did finish it). Finally bought all the FF games the other day on Steam and the first one has been remade and looks like a SNES game, so I suppose I'll have to start with that one, right?
Ultima and FF are drastically different games. While the NES ports of Ultima 3 and 4 look very similar to the FF games, Ultima games are open-world CRPGs ported to a console while FF are largely railway JRPGs. Very very different gameplay in most cases even.
Yup, hence the reason I never got into them at all. Figured I may as well 'see what the fuss is about.' Though I'm not a huge fan of railway RPGs and have never really gotten into JRPGs specifically. Closest would be Phantasy Star. I do find it amusing that when Ultima IV was released for the SMS, it was (and is) the best looking version of it, and it very much followed the computer version. But Nintendo never wanted that, and so they all look / play similar to the JRPGs.

Quoting: scaineNot gonna lie, if I'd bought this, I'd have refunded it in a heartbeat, even knowing that this fix exists. I have so little patience for developers and publishers expecting their own goddam customers to fix their shit. I used to - but something in the past couple of years has zeroed it out. I think it's my own expectations, which have been raised by the developers and publishers who do actually care about their reputation and customers. Because of them, I have no tolerance for this kind of ineptitude.

Great that it works though. But no money from me until they do the bare minimum I expect - their game to launch when I press the Play button.
This especially holds true when the developers / publishers are just purely lazy. Like the new free release of Daggerfall - GoG Cut. Sure it's free, because they can't legally charge for it. And sure they did some work to bundle a bunch of mods with it. Problem I have is that the project for Daggerfall: Unity has a Linux binary, and they couldn't be bothered with including it...
Get over it! It's just a bundled daggerfall unity with a bunch of mods. Can't you do it yourself?
You get over it! Ha, sure I can probably do it myself. But laziness is a factor. Seriously, GOG should be more multi-platform friendly, especially for something that they have to only put in very minimal effort into.

Total War: WARHAMMER III released for Linux with a port from Feral

Quoting: MohandevirDid they revamp the Feral launcher for better Steam Deck integration?
On Deck Feral titles are usually defaulted to Windows builds.

As most Deck users are normally Windows users and save file incompat, multiplayer incompat is not so desirable.
That sounds sloppy. Seems to me that Feral's ports (especially for AMD users) have performed better than Windows+Proton?
Nope. Just tested it and performance in semi-native version is much worse than in Proton on RX580 8GB. Also missing multiplayer with Windows and Mac version = broken port.
I just recommend to stay with Proton anyway. This is just bad port.
To be fair, though, I don't think most of this is ultimately Feral's fault.
That the port is so late - who knows when they got access to the game? The code sure changed a bit in recent months, given how broken it was on release...
And if CA doesn't "order" the multiplayer to be made compatible with Windows, which might be extra work = extra cost for CA.

In my experience, Feral ports have performed better than Proton, albeit not significantly (maybe 10-20%).

Still, while it's somewhat painful to say, Warhammer has generally been one of the cases where the Proton version is preferable due to mod compatibility, multiplayer compatibility and speed of updates. And WH3 is no exception.
It just seems sad and pointless to me; put in effort for a native port... only to have it work in lesser ways than the original. Granted this is why I hope with the Deck, more companies will just release cross-platform from the beginning. If they do it right, then it won't matter what OS you run, things should just work the same across the board.
It would be really nice to have to write one code which will run on any OS, just compile it for the specific OS. But I don't think this will never be true. Especially in the games, because of the optimizations and DRM.
It's kind of the whole purpose behind using Unity or Unreal. Not to mention Java, etc (the whole write once, run everywhere). Now when using some third party middleware stuff, that definitely doesn't always work out as well as plan, but it's perfectly possible.
