Interplay updating many classic titles on Steam to add support for Linux
18 Oct 2021 at 2:46 pm UTC

Ha, someone on Steam was complaining that the sound was terrible on Battle Chess. Yup, having played it somewhat recently on the Atari ST, Amiga and DOS... DOS definitely has crappy sound. The Amiga and ST version aren't great either, but still has better sound.

The ScummVM retro game project celebrates a 20th anniversary with a new release

Quoting: denyasisCrusader was such a good game. Even though it worked great on DosBox, I'm really happy these games also have an alternative home.

Congrats on 20 years!
I think the greatest beauty of ScummVM is the ports to things like the Atari Falcon and Amiga platforms, so people can finally play the games that never were released for it. Granted they have some limitations where some of the games supported by the ScummVM project don't work well enough on the old hardware. For this reason, the projects are usually dubbed something like ScummVM-Lite.

Crazy, I remember using the earlier builds of scummvm, it's come a very very long way!

Quoting: foggerYou can already play those games easily on Linux with DOSBox. I don't know why they are selling those games on Steam or GOG when most of those those games can be downloaded for free, legally, at archive.org.
Battle Chess was released by Interplay for the Commodore 64 in the mid 80’s
So yes, a bit of history there. But better full screen support with upscaled graphics
for modern displays would make the Descent series worthwhile for me.
Looking forward to playing Descent 2 on the Steam Deck.

So does this mean native Linux support, or through Proton?
Descent is already native.

Fallout 3 removes Games for Windows Live, works well on Linux with Proton

Quoting: slaapliedjeI believe they have stated in the past that if they ever went away, they would basically flip a switch and let people download their game collection with the steam requirement removed.
That may be the intention, but that only really applies if they decided to stop with Steam, which is very unlikely. It would be a whole different ballgame if they went bankrupt (also not too likely at this point) because then the user base would be the primary source of value and likely be sold as an asset.
Even if they went bankrupt, it isn't like they'd just disappear overnight. They'd be like the old Atari, and get passed around the block like a bong at a frat house.

Quoting: ArehandoroTo play Steam games offline, even if we were to have ALL games on our HDDs, we would need Goldberg Emulator, which to me is nothing more than another crack to bypass the online features of Steam.

Therefore, saving the difference in features, and not counting all the things Valve have done for the gaming community, etc, requiring Steam to play a game is not different as requiring GfWL.
Maybe I have all the wrong Steam games? Every time I've tried to play a Steam game when I didn't have internet access, it popped up a thing bitching about not being able to contact Steam and asked me if I wanted to play in offline mode; I said yes and played the game. I didn't need a crack or an emulator or whatever. So as far as I can tell, what you're saying just isn't the case.
It does bitch too. :P The crap thing is when you actually wanted to play something online :P Granted I think something like Valheim would have been fine, but it caused character sync issues last time Steam went down, and I lost all my equipment :(

Quoting: slaapliedjeCan we please have one with a 10key? People ask me, 'why do you need a 10 key' here are the reasons...
1) I use it generally to type in 2fa codes...
2) A lot of older games used the 10key as the controls, and I'm too lazy to rebind everything to more modern standards of WASD.
3) Emulation. Where the keypad is used either as joystick emulation or even more software that requires the keypad for movement.
There is the Wooting Two HE [External Link] which is a full-size version with all the same technology as the 60HE. Btw, related to joystick emulation, that's built in to Wooting keyboards as they are Analog
Woo hoo! okay, I may order that one. I should ask them if it supports the BOOT protocol.
If the BOOT protocol is the same as 6KRO, it does support it. By default it uses NKRO but you can disable that and use purely 6KRO
Hmm, I'll have to look into that. Easy test for anyone who has it, and a Mac (actually newer ones may not need it). My G5 tower for sure is one that needs one, as the keyboard won't work soon enough to be able to go to the boot menu.

Quoting: dubigrasuWell, for me is hello Ubuntu, goodbye Ubuntu, its days as my distro are numbered.
I had a short period using it, but I've been mostly a SteamOS user since 2013, and only resorted to Ubuntu when SteamOS 2.0 was clearly abandoned (or so I thought at the time).
I did tried to keep SteamOS alive by adding Sidux repos and having practically everything up to date, but it eventually it was: what's the point?

Ubuntu served me well and I have no complaints, but for now: So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish, looking forward for SteamOS 3.
I still think it shouldn't be called SteamOS 3 and needs to be 4... 3.0 was the beta branch based on Debian, and we all know Valve can't count to 3, but assuredly they can count to 4. :P

I also wish I could find some time to test it, but I don't know why you couldn't take SteamOS 2.0 and change the repositories to mainstream Debian and just upgrade to Bullseye and have a newer / stable system.
Well install a arch based distro and install steamos session + and you will have a SteamOS system without any hassle, or if you dont need the desktop install chimeraOS.
I actually triple boot on my main system, Arch Linux (had that install since pre-systemd switch), Debian Sid (for the past... 3? releases), and Windows 10. I've legit upgraded the hardware more than I've swapped out / re-installed operating systems. Though I did re-install Windows 10 to try to fix some issue, and damned if it actually fixed anything, it's still garbage :P Oh, it was because it wouldn't update to the latest version and that did get fixed by an install of the newer version :P

But installing Arch or ChimeraOS is not what I'm talking about here. My purpose was to prove out that Debian would have been fine to have stuck with, instead of them changing their base.

What is a 10key? something that inputs "10"? Never saw anything like that, especially not in keybindings.

The layout is not column-aligned (ortholinear or ergodox-like). I'll pass, I have enough typewriter keyboards :)

Plus, I've recently discovered the joy of binding games to esdf instead of wasd/zqsd: my fingers rest at their natural positions, I have more keys to bind on the left, and with a straight/ergonomic layout, it's a breeze to access the keys, like on a numpad. Good luck trying these bindings on a typewriter layout...

Also, I now have a gaming layer on my ergodox EZ: I rebind keys that would normally be meta, caps (ESC) and other to be more game-friendly. Basically, I can bind any key reachable by my left hand.
Ha, you know, the thing that has numlock/numbers. usually called the ten key, the numeric keypad, the thing that has been on the right side of keyboards since the old IBM computers and 16bit systems? The thing they chopped off the Amiga A600 to make it cheaper, but it was supposed to be the A300 and a cheaper model than the A500, but ended up being more expensive, so they called it the A600? The thing that companies keep chopping off of laptops.

Techland continue expanding the Hellraid DLC as they try to improve reviews

I still haven't sat down and played Hellraid, as I beat the game long ago and always find it hard to go back just to play some DLC, is it worth it?

Have we gotten any word about the second one being native to Linux?
