The upcoming No VR Mod for Half-Life: Alyx shows off amazing progress

Quoting: WorMzyI get that Alyx was supposed to be a showcase of VR potential and shoehorning keyboard and mouse support afterwards is unlikely to provide a comparative gaming experience, but it annoys me that I can't play the latest game in a series I've been playing since the late 1990s just because I can't splash out £1000+ on an sparsely-used gimmicky bit of tech that I wouldn't even be able to use unless I reorganise my living room.
You're right about the expense, so I think the trick is that you make sure that it's not "sparsely used". And if you think it's a gimmick, then you'll never spend that kind of money, I agree. I usually find that people who call VR a gimmick though just haven't tried VR on a modern headset. If if you have, and you still think it's a gimmick, I don't know what to say!

It's definitely not a gimmick to me though. The games I play in VR very different to what I'd play in "pancake" mode, but they're just as much fun, albeit in a different way.

I'm in VR about two or three times a week, even if only for 15 minutes in BoxVR to get some (much needed) exercise. My last big adventure in VR was The Room VR, which was superb, and now I'm enjoying Until you Fall which Liam streamed a while back. But I have hundreds of hours in Elite, which doesn't need any room to play at all (you just sit at your desk, as normal). Nor does Automobilista 2, or Ultrawings, or any cockpit-style game.

As long as you don't think of VR as being some big revolution that's gonna change gaming (spoiler: it won't), you'll get more out of it, I think.
I mean it kind of does change gaming.. it's just if they could bring down the price where more people are willing to impulse buy it...

I should spend more time in VR for sure. Also, someone should mod the rest of the Half-Life games into VR... I feel a lot will be left out / missing from Alyx's experience by making a flat version... Like being able to hide behind desks and throw grenades at the enemy. And realize how terrible you are at throwing things...

Paradox celebrate 1 year of Crusader Kings III with stats, like Cannibalism being popular

Quoting: ShabbyX> One of the stats they gave out showed that Cannibalism has been adopted 14,000 times! Oh my.

Well it's just a game. Like we keep playing games where we kill people and animals left and right, it's not like we have any desire to do that in real life.
Speak for yourself, let's all petition for the right to eat each other!

'Deckard' is apparently the codename for a possible standalone Valve VR headset

You may also start to quetion if you are a replicant.
You might choose Detroit: Become Human as first game for it... :)
I still need to play through that! Bought it many moons ago for the PS4. Loved Until Dawn.

It does seem like a pretty obvious correlation. AR over VR would be interesting given the formers greater complexity though. A standalone headset would definitely do wonders for pitching the steam deck, it will purportedly be capable of running other headsets, but one optimized for the deck could help match the performance gap.
Clever for sure. I am now waiting for Valve to announce a giant pyramid building, and that they are building androids.

Gonna have to fly in the Bladerunner...

Looks like Valve sent out quite a lot of Steam Deck developer kits

Quoting: EggbagI don't have many Steam games in my library to be honest, but once I get it I want to see how Battlefield games run lol. Of course I'll also be using RetroArch
It would have been nice to see the likes of the Dice devs ect messing with one, We could have at least some hope of the big boys seriously thinking about SD/Linux support.
For the later Battlefield games, it's just as much a curiosity if they'll run under Linux, as it is to see if they'll run on the Steam Deck with good enough performance! Those are some hefty games as far as requirements go.

Now that I've got a somewhat decent set up for playing Valheim on the Steam Controller, I'll have to see how to convert that over to the Steam Deck when I get one. Q1 for 2022!

EZ.
That will be a big problem if Valve keep selling their hardware exclusively on Steam and not in the usual store circuit. Particularly for the Deck, whatever people say it's not just an ultra-mobile gaming computer it's a handheld console. And console sell way better when you can found them everywhere.
I hope not steam had to cut their budget already. Distribution through other companies could make the steam deck .ore expensive aka less desirable then a switch for the normies.
Just get them in Wal-mart and Best Buy and Target. They worked hard on getting the right pricepoint so that it could work in retail.

What element has changed their mind ?
Everything is changing in rapid pace right now in our world. They can get on for a ride or stay with their old stance and wither out. What times being alive for Linux gaming and towards platform agnosticism :woot:
I am hoping that Microsoft adds to it by forcing people to deprecate their hardware or run Linux, due to their decisions on Windows 11.

Then again we have all hoped that with every bone headed release they do. Though the number of *nux users do increase from them, it isn't like a torrential flood.

The failure (I have always been convinced of this) of the Steam Machines were that they were not made by valve, and that there were too many models / tiers. OS wise it seemed fine for its purpose (to boot Steam). It was too pricey and too hard for the console users to pick a brand / set up. Then also manufacturers wouldn't even always put SteamOS on them and just loaded them with Windows anyhow...

But now with Proton, a handheld that is going to push the Linux based SteamOS without being 'just a small PC' with a bunch of different specs, it should be a winner. That missing piece of the anti-cheat methods (sorry, AC still means Armor Class or Air Conditioning to me...) certainly is one of the big blockers for games to work. Funcom at one time had rumored Conan Exiles for coming out for Linux. Maybe we can convince them to Proton it up, and we can have a dedicated server so we can run around and be eaten by hyenas.

or players instaling windows
What is funny is the Atari VCS full on supports installing Windows on it, but it is very much not as simple as putting the installer on a USB stick and then installing it to an internal drive (from what I have read, I wouldn't do such a thing myself). I think their instructions are basically to install it to a drive connected to a USB port, then connect the drive. If the same can be said for the Deck... it is not likely people will just put Windows on it.

Quoting: RossBCTo my understanding, you need to use the none eac executable and only get access to campaign and you need to use a external means to play on none official open servers.
Oh, I only ever play games like that single player. I don't like people enough to do it online.
