Dell announce new XPS 13 laptop models, will support moving from Windows to Ubuntu

I think this is the PERCECT time for Dell to step up their game, and Lenovo to jump and maybe we will see HP and a few others of the big name ones. Acer and Asus are less likely. Here is why I think this...
With Apple announcing their move to ARM, I think more and more corporatio s who would by macbooms for their developers because it is Unix-like enough and has some good tools for developing in a Unix-like environments, a lot of devs would prefer Linux laptops. But historically, getting an IT team to support Linux in a corporate environment has been far more of a pain than getting macs set up.
But the unknown of the ARM performance, the previous lack of support channels for Linux on corporate laptops, and Apple's tendency to try to 'innovate' with bad ideas (that is right Apple, NO ONE wanted the touch bar! When devs are excited they are getting back the escape key, you know you screwed up!)..
I think this is a great time for some corporate push from the big guns to sell Linux laptops. I figure Asus isn't generally the ones that companies buy, and so they probably won't directly sell any laptops pre-installed with Linux. They may even still be bummed the Netbooks didn't kick off as well as they wanted.
On the bright side for System76 and Librem, there are still individuals paranoid enough and smart enough to buy them based on the privacy/security based mods they do!
Anyhow, if for my personal laptop, I would go with one of those two. Work orders Dells and Macs, would be awesome if I could convince them to give me a Linux one (though at this loint I would prefer something other than Ubuntu, give me RHEL 8.x or something!)

It's a race for me now... The Amiga inspired Vampire V4SA (ordered today) or the Atari VCS800, which will arrive first! Earlier this year I finally got the CosmosEx 3.0 for my Atari ST line of computers (Sort of a Gotek floppy drive hybrid mixed with a Raspberry pi for some sweet features).
Guess I could do a review of the VCS assuming I get one sooner than anyone else here.

Play more classics including one from 1976 with a new ScummVM release

I somewhat recently got an Atari PC4. Yup, Atari dipped their toes into the PC business for a bit. The PC was an 8088 like the Mega ST in design. Then the PC2 and PC3 were more like an IBM XT. The PC4 like I have was the last one with an Atari made motherboard, but was an 8/12 or 8/16mhz 286 system (2nd number is turbo). PC5 was a 386, but the biard wasn't designed by them...
Anyhow, Ultima V actually works fine on a 286... unless you install the MIDI and Graphic enhancement mod, which makes it require at least a 386! Mods for sure should not increase requirements...
Somewhat related to ScummVM, having an AWE64 connected to a Roland MT-32 is pretty sweet! I normally have it hooked up to my PC for ScummVM, but for now I have the SC-88 pro there.

Quoting: Avehicle7887I never used ScummVM since most games are not my type, Ultima 8 though that's hard one to pass up and I've played it to death on my old 486, so I'll give this a shot :grin:Want to hear something messed up?
EDIT:
Source code compiled fine, we have lift off!

Quoting: dudeIt was an ootb experience on Manjaro with Nvidia. Except the bluetooth connection to the base stations for power management, but there is an Android app, Lighthouse PM, that can be used as a workaround.Ha, yeah if I end up upgrading to a 3080, it will be for VR. I legit gor a 2080 so I could use the cool VR link... then they decided to not sell it...I still wonder if they couldn't get it to work.
Whole thing works better than expected. Beefy GPU recommended though.

Quoting: RafiLinuxYeah, but as you say, for sure there are examples where games are just simply lost to time because a service goes down, or the source is lost, etc. And Google simply does not have a great track record.Quoting: slaapliedjeThere are definitely games that are now unplayable because they depended on... now I can't even remember the name. It was a service that would hook people up for multi-player. A lot of games were patched so they don't require it anymore, but the services all were shut down (Neverwinter Nights (original) was one of them that used it.You mean gamespy? There are plenty of work arounds. For example No One Lives Forever used Gamespy but the game also installed a self-hoster so you can still play it online via of the old ip methods.
Games For Windows is another one.
Yeah, I've been playing games since the 80s as well, in fact I am heavily into collecting and playing old Atari 8bit games especially, but have an Ultimate64, and Apple IIGS as well. Nothing quite like playing it on real hardware :)
You can still LAN those games and use stuff like Parsec with it. Just saying that computer gaming community usually responds with solutions.
There was even a way to download Gametap games a while back before that server shut down.
Beamdog just gave Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition a big graphical boost

Quoting: mosI think the idea that while they are both fruit, the orange needs to be peeled, is naturally divided into slices, and also citrus flavored as well as have the tendency to shoot you in the eye with acidic juice! Apples have none of those qualities (unless you are odd and peel your apple skins off).Quoting: DrMcCoyYou're comparing apples and oranges.bravo you're just defeated your own point. apples and oranges have quite a few things in common you know. It's debating whether one is unequivocally better than the other is silly.

Here is the thing about Stadia or any streaming service. If you have a somewhat spotty internet, you are not going to be able to use it at all. If it gets encouraged, and more comlanies start streaming services, those that are unfortunate enough to not have solid connections will be left going outside to be entertained! As person that's been gaming on the computer since the 80's, nothing ever really goes away like that. I still rock MUDs with a good playerbase. I like Stadia a lot but my first choice for buying games is GOG but if it's online MP, I'm heading to Stadia.

Quoting: AnzaI ended up getting BL3 on the PS4 so my brother and I could play it online.Quoting: GuestI'm going to go out on a limb and point out that Borderlands 3 was an Epic Games Store exclusive for a while. Every time I see the name Epic become involved, Linux support seems to go away. Didn't something similar happen with Rocket League? Or am I remembering wrong? I refused to buy BL3 until I saw cross-play fixed for Linux on BL2. I guess I'll never know what BL3 is like. I'm stubborn like that. There was free weekend some time ago and I played most of the intro. At that point videos didn't work with default Proton, which prevented me from advancing further. Proton GE should have worked, though apparently switching between Proton versions needs some additional fiddling around. At that point I gave up.
So you haven't missed that much...

What I want to see is the performance difference between the 3090 and the rest of the line up. I mean what justifies that price jump? I also find it amusing that some places still list the 2080Ti up to 1900 bucks...

The marketing industry is absolutely salivating at the prospect of increasing ad presence in games, and I'm not talking just the free to play stuff. And the AAA industry is all too happy to take their money.
