Work is under way to get proper Steam Controller support in the Linux Kernel

I think the biggest benefit of this will be things like the RetroPie, where there is no steam client, and the sc-xbox.py does something funky with the triggers (probably due to them having analog/button ranges.)

Here's to hoping they work on NWN2 next.

Yeah I know about the pains of NWN2 and it using Windows specific APIs. Then again, Baldur's Gate and all the other EE games they worked on were written for earlier DirectX. So who knows? Obsidian is definitely more Linux friendly than most though, at least now they are. Previously everyone thought they were turds for changing NWN's engine to be DX only for part 2.

I think there was hope that the toolset would be ported finally, but from glancing at some of this it's a weak 'maybe'. https://forums.beamdog.com/discussion/66930/linux-version-of-the-toolset#latest [External Link]

Quoting: slaapliedjeIn case you missed these RPGs; Wasteland 2, Shadow Run, Bard's Tale (4 is coming!), Pillars of Eternity, Tyrant, Neverwinter Nights:Enhanced Edition, plus all the other EE games. Of course if you do like old school RPGs, GOG has all the gold box ones wrapped up for Linux too.
They are all old school /sometric RPG (i.e. Baldur's gate style). That's nice, but we have zero first person RPG with a non linear story and/or open world. Maybe Dying light (rpg/action) but that's all. One game.

Some games like Skyrim, Gothic 3, Kingdom Come: Deliverance etc. are really missing on Linux.
Feral and other porters can only port games that fulfill a few basic criteria

1. The rights holder must want, or be open to, a Linux port.

2. The porter must believe the amount of work is justified by the potential return,

3. The porter and rights holder must be able to come to an agreement.

Many of the first person AAA games fail on the first criterion, as the likes of EA and Zenimax currently dismiss anything to do with Linux out of hand; but some are also excluded due to porting and support costs, or an inability to agree terms.

Personally, I like both Paradox grand strategy and CA's mix of strategy with real-time tactical battles, so I appreciate those ports.

However I also like CRPGs, both Isometric and 1st/3rd person, and both directed-path and open-world, so I also understand the frustration that these are thin on the ground. I am certain that Feral are aware of these frustrations, but it doesn't mean they can do anything about it.

One thing that interests me is the fact that Beamdog are releasing a new version of NWN. As a Bioware game, that should be EA property, unless they sold the rights off. Maybe I'll go look on the Beamdog web site...
Actually I think the rights to Neverwinter Nights might belong to Atari, Bioware wasn't publishing through EA until after NWN was released. The second one was as well, though it was developed by Obsidian, which I believe also developed KOTOR 2, which also has a Linux port, not to mention Pillars of Eternity. So NWN2 confirmed for Linux? :p

We've got good old Witcher 2.

I guess your definition of rpg/action should cover Mad Max and Shadow of Mordor as well. And Tomb Raider? Personally I wouldn't call these RPGs though. I like open world action games with plenty of exploration, but their stories don't leave much room for role-playing.
Ha, not many crpgs actually allow for much roleplaying, usually their rpg-ness comes from being able to customise your character, in which case Mad Max and Shadow of Mordor qualify. Tomb Raider less so.

Also, and maybe this is just me, but the party based isometric RPGs are the best ones. The Skyrims of the world are like graphical errand runners. :P. Well, less so than say WoW, but there are still plenty of quests of gather this, steal that, etc.

To be fair, I have been playing a lot of Horizon: Zero Dawn lately and it has a few rare choices to make, and really is just a game with a decent plot, but a huge amount of eye candy. Very often though I feel like I am doing quests just for the xp, or to get a trophy. A really good RPG doesn't need a particular style, it just needs a good story, a rewarding ending and some opportunities for making a difference within the game. Too many of the ones with fancy graphics fail at that. (Skyrim is good though, just trying to be a completionist gets tiring....)

Hypergate, a new space-combat sim will support Linux

Quoting: iiari
Quoting: slaapliedjeI keep meaning to try it, but there is that BSG conversion for Freespace 2 out there
It's really worth trying. It's a lot of fun and a very polished effort. I was never able to get the Linux open version to compile correctly, though, and only got it to work (with effort!) in Wine. The Freespace 2 engine, though, is starting to show its age and feels old in comparison with newer, Newtonian efforts like Helium Rain and Astrokill, just as Freespace 2 made Wing Commander feel old...

And yes, it's been a great time for space sims on Linux. Early versions of Everspace, Helium Rain, and Astrokill dropped in '17. I think Helium Rain is being developed on its way to classic status for space traders and it now has a combat skirmish mode to play around with that's quite fun. Astrokill is a ton of fun, my favorite space combat engine to date and, according to those who use it, its VR mode works well in Linux!

For those willing to use Wine, the excellent House of the Dying Suns works well as does the early access Angels Fall First.

Arguably, the only 3 big space Windows titles we lack on Linux are Elite: Dangerous, Star Citizen, and Eve: Valkyrie and, frankly, I'm really not missing any of those (flawed) titles.

I'm curious to see how Hypergate handles multiplayer since, as big a fan of the genre as I am, I'm not sure space combat lends itself to multiplayer very well. Even on the classic, vaunted X-Wing vs Tie Fighter multiplayer was "meh" and the compromises crippled the single player engine. It basically devolves into jousting in open space. Eve attempted to introduce some skill and strategy with complex environments to dodge and hide in. In Elite Dangerous there's some Neutonian mastery that can put you ahead of opponents without such skills. Otherwise, though, it's a tough nut to crack. Space sims seem more fun as solo players...
That's why I like how Elite: Dangerous did it. You can either play in the open world and randomly get nabbed, in solo mode where it's just you against the universe, or in a group play, where it's you and friends against the universe. But the universe stays consistent throughout so you can play in all of them.

I still need to give Astrokill a try, especially in VR. Just haven't had time to play much lately.

Microsoft is rumoured to be looking to buy Valve, EA and others
22 Feb 2018 at 9:03 pm UTC

Quoting: GuestEA purchased by Microsoft would be a fitting fate.
I sadly still have some nostalgic feelings toward Electronic Arts. Back when they had a ECA as their logo. Great games like Lords of Conquest, Racing Destruction Set, Starflight, etc. That was before they became a sports game publisher and all the other crazy money making schemes.

Not sure if Origin is as shit as G4WL though, is it?

Season-changing action platformer 'FOX n FORESTS' to release this Spring
22 Feb 2018 at 4:38 pm UTC

Looks pretty, but what I would love to see is the Rayman games ported. They're one of my favorite platform games, ever since the first one was released on the Atari Jaguar, and I bought it for a dollar.

Still haven't beaten the first one, but I have completed Origins and... one of the other ones.

I'll have to buy this one when it's released.
