Quoting: Liam DaweA reminder to all: no fights in the comments. Don't quote other people to fight. I will remove any that do. If you have something to say you feel is important, that's fine, but don't quote others to fight on it.
I have something important to say!!!

Oh wait, no I don't... carry on. :P

Stop mixing magnets with the Steam Deck or face fan and temperature troubles

Quoting: CZiNTrPTI love the magnet on my dbrand killswitch though. Also put my additional sd card on there via magnets.

Just finished switching my delta fan for the better one this weekend (had it used together with killswitch for months now). I don't feel any difference though. If it just breaks the fan in the long term, I'm good with that tradeoff for overall convenience
I agree with you 100%. I haven't checked to see which fan I have, but I haven't noticed any change in speed or heat when the kickstand is on vs off. I absolutely love the case, the plastic cover for travel, and the magnetic kickstand; I am totally fine with the increased risk of heat or wear/ tear. It's too bad there's not more information about the percentage of circulating steam decks with the affected fan, as I'm pretty happy with my current accessories with magnets via dbrand and would love to see more. I guess we'll see what the mechanical attachment feels like soon.
You can also check your steamdecks components on the steam store directly without opening it. It's pretty neat
Link? That is way cool.

20 years later the open source Colonization game FreeCol hits 1.0
11 Jan 2023 at 5:24 pm UTC

Quoting: GBGamesSeeing 1.0 for FreeCol. Wow! That brings back some memories. I just checked my Projects/SourceCode directory, and I have fcca-0.8.0 in there (around 2008?), mainly to study. I never participated in the project, but I used to love Colonization back in the day, and this game was one I was excited about. I think I used to have an older version, like 0.1 or 0.3 probably from 20ish years ago, but I must have gotten rid of it or it is on an old hard drive.

Quoting: Deleted_UserThat being said i think that a Colonization Game should say a word or two about History of the Native Americans during the Colonization Era nowadays.
Totally agree.

I love playing older games, but Colonization was one of the only games I had trouble getting myself back to play due to the ick factor of playing as a colonizing power after learning more about how horrific that period of time actually was.
History is filled with terrible things. We shouldn't shy away from such knowledge, and try to learn to not do horrible things in the future.

Side note; I have seen recently posts from native American ancestors who point out the tribes were constantly killing each other off. The colonizers simply sped up the process. Not sure why Colonization is any more violent and 'ick' as any other strategy game. They all include a virtual mass of casualties.

After playing Assassin's Creed: Odyssey for a few hours, I wonder how many people that were just guarding some random place I had murdered. Must be in the thousands at this point... but hey, I am doing it in a video game.

Nice!!! I just ended up putting my old Bluray drive into an external case; as not all computer cases are including a 5.25" bay these days...
A shame 5.25" bays are going out of fashion really, they are handy for more than just disk drives. I remember buying my father a bay accessory with a car cigarette lighter on it, as a bit of a joke, and he ended up using it for years until he quit smoking.
Ha, I enjoyed the jokes about optical drives being cup holders... and then someone built a bay device that was a cup holder.

The most gnarly thing I ever saw was an early teledildonics device, where you would use it as a... well they had little animations of a dude banging his PC tower :P
You should be more careful of the things you say that people won't be able to un-see.
Another mind ruined!!

Quoting: GroganI generally don't like "simulators" but one thing this has going for it... at least it looks realistic, not all multicoloured space etc. For example, no, a system with a green spectrum star doesn't have... green space. Maybe green light reflecting off dust clouds or something but space is not green! :-)

That's something that bugs me about a lot of those stupid space games.

I might like this one. Cargo missions etc.
Ha, this is how I play Elite: Dangerous. Mostly flying around doing passenger / cargo missions, and getting some Exploration money. I play the game to relax, not have high anxiety that pirates (or other players) are going to loot my corpse in space...
So, Elite: Not Very Dangerous!
INDEED!

Speaking of dbrand, got an email from them yesterday about them starting shipment on their replacement for their screw up. Crazy that others are still designing things with magnets based on how they had to eat the cost of the design.

I sure wouldn't like that. Worse are those games where even your "single player" game is online, and people can come and mess up your shit while you're not there. They added that to No Man's Sky in an update (I turned it off from the get go, but it digusted me that it was added in an update)

I had a friend (gone now) that used to play this game on his PS4 where people would come and raid his base. The only way he could sleep was to set up a bunch of automated defenses all over his base before he went to bed. I forget what the game was, but it was a tactical combat game. Maybe Metal Gear 5 or something like that (it was a popular franchise that I didn't like, if not that one)
Elite: Dangerous does it in a great way. They have Solo, Group, or Online modes. All are technically online (as Solo uses their servers to generate the worlds) but you won't encounter other players. Group play means you can play with a group of friends only, and the universe at large can't mess with you. Then the full online is where all the player interaction can happen.

The real beauty is you can flip back and forth between the three with the same pilot.
