Dwarf Fortress releases December 6 on Steam and itch.io, Native Linux support later

Quoting: anewsonI'm quite curious how spin-off games like Rimworld have paved the way to the masses for DF. I suspect the answer is "not much," but I suppose there is a world in which DF does become a massive hit.
Friend of mine has played more hours of Rimworld than I think I have played all of my Steam games combined... damn, I remember when I used to have the patience to play that long, I sadly do not anymore. Though I am trying to refuse watching shows and play more games though. 😜

I don't think he, or a lot of people even are aware of Dwarf Fortress.

Quoting: amataiWait, what ? Wasn't this a NCurses game on everyone's distro repos ? How can it be not available on Linux ?
I was going to reply with 'never have seen it in the Debian repos!' but it IS there. Did they only just add it for Bullseye?
Looking at the changelog, it has been in Debian since 2017.
So weird! Ha, knowing my luck I was looking for dwarffortress and not dwarf-fortress. By the way, everything should be written in NCurses, graphics are way overrated.

Elon Musk completes Twitter takeover, Nextcloud to ship their own social network app

Quoting: CyborgZetaI deleted my Twitter account a couple days ago. I had it for years, but pretty much never used it. I'm just not a social media person, and I actively dislike Twitter.

Signed up with Mastodon back in August and used it for a while. I like it better than Twitter, but I eventually ran into the same problem; I'm not a social media person. However, I will keep my Mastodon (Fosstodon) account active, in case I decide to use it again.
Ha, I literally created a Twitter account only because that is where Rockstar was posting fixes for GTA V... and I looked at it about three times, and gave up. Twitter has always been something that I apparently am just 'too out of touch' to consider useful in any way. Granted I also hate Facebook, but generally use it for getting project updates where people post there first before old forums and such. Forums are still far more useful than Facebook/Twitter, as you can then search through years of posts for the info you need.

Quoting: WorMzyPity the Linux version isn't going to be available on day one, I'd love to buy this to show my support. Hopefully the graphics make it more accessible for people who were put off by the text/tileset-based graphics, although I'm sure the steep learning curve will still be there. :D
Yeah, I think I'll wait for the Linux native release as well. Proton is nice and all... but I'm tired of chasing around what version will work on the desktop vs what will work on the Steam Deck, as they occasionally are not the same (not sure if that's a conflict between nvidia and AMD, or what the deal is).

I never saw the point in Twitter, so I suppose it affects me very little that Elon bought it. I just thought it was funny when he did. It definitely hasn't ever been a well balanced place from what I have read.

Quoting: ShmerlOn one hand, or on the other hand complexity of games increased to the point where they became less profitable to release with more bug fixes due to budget / development time balance. That's why we see them released as beta quality and only gain fixes over time after that.

Players want more complex games, players want games bug free. To me it looks like these two are at odds.

There's an additional difference. You don't have a problem to install an update and another one and yet another one for any of your games.(*) It's not like you're sitting on your DVD version forever. Won't make people loving it, but it decreases the pain for the player.

(*) Well, for those with decent internet connection and pricing.
Yeah, long gone are the days where you'd pick up a floppy disk game from a shop and take it home to pop into your floppy drives, make a backup of the original, and then play off your copy until it irritates you so much that you take the floppy disk out and throw it at your brother who the game is glitching for. These days devs put their games up as 'early access' and then stay in beta for years and years, and when there are game breaking bugs, they just can shrug and say it's early access...

One can argue which way is better; getting the full QA tested game that never gets updated, and is considered a complete game when you buy it. Or getting a potentially incomplete and buggy game sooner, but then having to wait to play it? (Looking at you Cyberpunk 2077, which is definitely the worse case scenario for this option)

First setup I'd seen this way was the AtariVCS. Definitely made me think of other possibilities for other uses of such a setup.

Quoting: ArehandoroI'm both happy and upset about the news of more remakes.
In my mind, what they should do, if they mean a 'proper' remake, is redo all three so you can beat one right after the other and keep some progress on your character like some older RPGs did.

My take is that remaking 2 and 3 on Unreal 5 will depend on how successful this first one is. As to beating one after the other, keeping the progress, that's already possible. In 2 you can import saves from 1st, and in 3 from 2nd.

Awesome, I wasn't aware you could do that with the series.

Quoting: slaapliedjeSweet! This has always been my favorite RTS. Warwind is probably the second, though I need to play that more.

I have seen you post often on these kind of news and was curious (no joke) about what would be your RTS poison of choice.
Good pick, this is from the "golden era", really the other ones on the race could be Total Annihilation and some C&C.

Between OpenRA and 0AD, they are doing an amazing work here. OpenRA engine offers potential long term survival on a game like this, especially if we consider multiplayer.

Command and Conquer series is also good. Myth is an amazing series. Generally I like ones that break the mold of the typical Warcraft II / Star Craft clones.

Like I prefer the games where your units have a bit more personality (as in they can get better over time, and you want to make sure they live through a battle, Myth captures that in an amazing way, as does Warwind.)
Soo.. WarCraft III?
Blizzard had already pissed me off so I never bothered with WCIII :P
