Valve overhauled Steam Deck 'As Mouse' Gyro option in new Beta

I usually will put gyro as a toggle on the right stick "click" input and that makes for some nice fps game play where I want a toggle style gyro control. Some games like Shadow of Tomb Raider have it on the right trackpad touch action by default too. I use gyro all the time. Makes for really nice aiming that makes me miss mouse input much less than just having the thumb sticks would. Thumb sticks in FPS still sucks in my opinion. I've never seen a controller thumb stick setup that didn't make aiming in FPS style games feel clumsy as hell. Gyro is a very nice solution and something that makes the Steam Deck much better in my opinion.
It also gives off a weird "almost VR" feel. When you hold the deck in front of you and move the deck to look. It's like having a less immersive VR feel but without the motion sickness and the cumbersome headset strapped to your face.
Overall Gyro is amazing and has become something that would be quite hard to live without on the Deck.

Quoting: PenglingThey also don't offer the Linux versions for games that already have them! I submitted an article to GOL about a native Linux game a little while back, and when I was writing down which stores it was available from, I had to leave out Epic because they only sell the Windows version.I think I would be more tolerant of Epic if they built in a loop hole for platforms they don't support. Like the Windows version is exclusive, but you can still put Linux and Mac version on steam. If they did that, It would be a bit nicer as it would encourage native Linux support in games. I still wouldn't buy their stuff though, no Tux no bux, hard pass.

I 100% do NOT buy from Epic games, ever. I sometimes consider buying from GOG, but not often. The reason is simple, no Linux support. Epic, in my opinion, actually actively hurt Linux when it first launched because of it's exclusivity deals. Games that were going to release on Steam with Linux support, Afterparty as an example, ended up going to Epic as an exclusive for like a year instead with NO Linux support. GOG at least releases games with native Linux support, but they don't support Linux with their official GOG galaxy application, so again Linux users get half-hearted support and are left out in the cold with no feature parity. If you want to see Linux gaming to continue to excel, we need to support Steam. They are the only store that actually gives us real, whole-hearted support. I get so tired of these companies forcing the Linux community to take matters in to their own hands so we can use their stuff. If they want my money, they need to support my platform with feature parity. *Mic drop*

Well it would be nice if they could include nftables and firewalld, even if disabled by default. The fact that the steam deck ships with no firewall seems like a massive oversight to me, particularly when things like kde connect and steam link exist on it. Would also like ossp installed by default for retro gaming compatibility, it's one package and it's annoying to reinstall these things every time steamos clobbers the file system with an update.

I emulate pretty much everything on my steam deck. My deck is basically a portable nostalgia machine. Pick a period in my life and I can play games from the time on my steam deck. It's crazy. So far, I'm able to get pretty much everything I've tried working. Even got SNES Scope game Metal Combat working with gyro motion control. Haven't messed with trying to get NES gun working yet though.

scp username@computername:~/zelda3.tar.gz .
Note the dot (.) at the end.
Next I extracted the tarball to my memory card via tar xvzf zelda3.tar.gz /run/media/memorycardmountpoint
Finally I added it to my steam setup as a non-steam game, and used steamgriddb plugin in decky loader to grab artwork and such for the game.

Quoting: jrgiaconeIs it better to compile on the desktop and move the folder over to the steam deck, or would it be best to compile on the steam deck? That's what I did. Just compiled it on my Debian machine via the make command and created a directory ~/zelda3 then moved the zelda3 binary, the zelda3.ini file, and then created a ~/zelda3/tables directory and moved the zelda3_assets.dat file into it. Those are the only 3 files you need to make it work, everything else seems to be unnecessary. Then I made a tarball by moving to the home directory and used tar cvzf zelda3.tar.gz zelda3. Then I used scp from my steam deck to transfer with:
scp username@computername:~/zelda3.tar.gz .

Works very well on a Steamdeck. Controls worked out of the box. If you run this, adjust the ini file to enable extra features like 16:10 res and other nice things.

Quoting: TrashHeap64There is seemingly a big issue with DNS on the steam deck that I would like fixed. I have two decks and for some reason only one of them requires that I add DNS manually or many things won't work. I've seen many people on Reddit saying they have the same issue with no acknowledgement from Valve. That's interesting, I've had my Deck for about a month now and haven't noticed any networking problems at all. I do, however, run my own custom dns/dhcp servers and I haven't really used my deck off network yet, so it remains to be seen if that will keep holding true.

I hope they improve the security around steam link. Steam link is amazing and if you're not using it on your deck, you should be. However, currently there is major room for improvement. For instance, currently you can set a pin for security, but that doesn't help much if you're streaming to a tv that uses only a remote. Typing the pin with a remote in a crowded room of onlookers is not ideal. It would be better if the steam link connections were initiated from the steam deck rather than the remote tv device, or at the very least approved from the deck. would also be nice if the security settings for steam link were per paired device, rather than global to all paired devices. Basically it's all or nothing for security and the pin is your only option. would be nice if i could leave some systems without and some systems with. My personal desktop probably doesn't need a pin, but the family room tv that everyone uses should have some security for instance. I would also love to see the ability to terminate steam link connections from the deck. Like if you have a steam link connection on your deck currently streaming, you should just be able to hit a button to disconnect that session on the deck. As of now I've seen no such button, and I find that a little unsettling. I also don't think the deck does enough to notify you when a streaming session starts. They kind of assume you and only you have 100% control of every device you're connecting to your deck. It's possible though that if you have a shared tv for your kid to start a streaming session while you're playing a game and you could be completely oblivious to that. That's especially dangerous if you happen to be playing/watching something "adult" oriented. Never mind that the tv can gain complete remote access and control the steam deck via the tv remote in some cases. Yes you have to pair the device beforehand, but if you don't set a pin and carefully guard the screen when you type it in, your kids could really mess with you if they're clever.
Also, Steam Deck needs firewalld/nftables built in. It was a huge pain to set that up and I feel it's 100% necessary with things like steam link and kde connect on the deck by default.
