'Distant Land': meh. Awesome when it's available, but not a feature I'm waiting for. We had no option of using it even under Wine until the last year and a half or so. Shadows though, the shadows 0.36.1 and earlier had were very nice, far superior to any of the options in the original engine with mods. But they're a really minor thing. Playing with 0.40.0, I don't particularly miss them.

This game is one of my personal favs. The mod community is small but strong, and they've given it a life all its own that feels *like* Elite, but definitely has some new twists.

Shame in some ways that I hadn't noticed postings of the tournament earlier, I used to be a big old school CnC fan, and have been enjoying OpenRA for a while. I'll have fun watching this later though.

NVidia has a beta driver with Vulkan already, and has had such for weeks, but it's not in any widely released beta or production driver for Linux.

There's a lot of things that run under Wine. I like Wine. But running under Wine is not the same as running natively under Linux. In saying things like 'Then I'll just run the original version' to play the original game, kind of invalidates the whole purpose of this project, which is, in addition to making Morrowind cross platform, to extend the engine to allow it to do even more. Graphically, previous versions also did things that the original engine couldn't do ( muuuch better shaders) that will need to be ported up to the new graphical stack.
There are some standalone games in development for use with the OpenMW engine as well. (Ports of Age of Apocalypse + Desert Region 2 are underway, as well as OpenMW's own testbed project)

There is also slow work on a demo environment. I'd recommend having a look through their forums. Also, there's a LOT of game mechanics differences between Morrowind and Skyrim/Skywind. Skywind also is taking a lot of liberties with their assets, it doesn't feel to me as though it will be anywhere near the same game to me. Also: OpenMW runs on Linux. Skyrim does not.

Hmmm. I own Falcon Gold and Falcon 4. I could never get the latter to run properly under Wine. So for that, this might be worthwhile. Soooo many hours in Falcon 3.0 as a kid, though. So many hours.

More development on Linux is amazing, as a linux user it means that I can be pretty certain that if there is a problem with a game, when reported the linux version will likely get priority for getting the fix in. It also means that the developer can spend less time dealing with the OS's instabilities, and more time dealing with the aspects of their games that they find important.
Developing on Linux naturally leads toward cross platform development anyhow, which means that of course the game will run, and likely run well with little modification on MacOSX, Windows, *BSD, IRIX, and any number of POSIX compatible operating systems, unless the developer focuses on using features that are Linux specific (which are very rare, and not terribly relevent for games)
Over the course of gaming history, I can think of at least two games that were initially developed on a UNIX plaform and 'ported' to the 'mainstream' OS of the day (MS-DOS) for public release -- Doom and Doom II. They've since come full circle and are better on Linux now than they were on their original plaforms.
