Valve reveals Steam Deck OLED for November 16th
10 November 2023 at 5:01 pm UTC Likes: 3

Yeah. From what I heard (Linus Tech Tips), they achieved it by shrinking the bezels. The overall size of the screen is unchanged. So, the original SD's screen might be upgradable. Let's wait and see...[/quote]

In the Gamers Nexus video on it touches on this with a "statement" from a avlave engineer saying it isnt possible to swap in the OLED screen to a non OLED model; see at below timestamp:

Well that is a much more palatable price to me; so I have picked one up, worst case it goes into my PC instead!

I plan on picking this up once Linux Native support is released officially.

If they dont then I may still pick it up once it hits the sales, so long as its Proton support is good.

Tempted to pickup the kickstand one; I saw the 'development' on reddit but your video on it is great at showcasing.

You could fitlter out the 'Meta' tag in your account profile it will then hide all these from the news feed you unless you specifically look at 'All'

SteamOS Plugin Manager should enable lots of fun on the Steam Deck

Will this need to be resetup after every update of SteamOS? I ask cause I notice it needs to be installed under Developer mode and installed to the root filesystem.

Looks interesting though.

Starting this Summer, iFixit will offer Steam Deck replacement parts

Makes sense that it is 'Summer' onwards for availability as they will need the bulk of components for production to eat into the queue and get the 'After Q2' lot fulfilled. If they weent to early with the spares it would probably rub some people the wrong way if they arent maximising production, even though a percentage of parts will always be alloted for spares and repairs.

Additionally they will be building their own component stock for RMA's etc.

Cant wait to get mine, part of me though is regretting the 256GB choice and should have gone for the 64GB, but who was to know how easy the upgrade of the NVME drive was going to be.

The Steam Deck has released, here's my initial review

Firstly, this is an excellent write-up of your first impressions, so much info and detail, it was great read and up there with the 'Major' outlets in quality, if not more so.

I wanted to address the below as you said you found it peculiar

Quote3). Additionally, sometimes the Deck may report less than a 100% charge as full, Valve explained over email:

If your device has been left on the charger for long periods of time, it may report less than 100% when taking it off the charger. This is normal – we allow the battery to slowly discharge after long periods of time under charge to optimize long-term battery health.

Personally, I find that decision a bit peculiar and will lead to confusion for users unless it’s very carefully and clearly noted.

While no means an expert in battery technology I do work with backup power supplies and we offer Li-ion batteries as an option, and it is pretty standard for these batteries to charge to 100% then self discharge to 80% in order to maintain longevity; in our case this happens over the course of a month but were talking about 100-250Ahr blocks here that are permanently connected to a power supply.
