Quoting: mylkado you think mircrosoft can make wine/proton somehow illegal if it gets too big?
Nope. Wine doesn't use any copyrighted code, and it doesn't use code injectors to alter the installed software. It simply takes Windows calls and translates them into ones that Linux can execute. Believe me, if Microsoft could shut down Wine then they would have done it years ago.

It reminds me of Titan Quest, which isn't necessarily a good thing because I found Titan Quest rather bland.

I'm always suspicious of games that try to mix different play styles -- in this case action RPG and strategy -- because very few do it well.

Quoting: elmapuli just wish we could find an way to stop using MS code entirely, even if we arent using the windows kernel and windows, we are still runing direct X and its libraries
We can only hope developers see the advantages of making their games Linux friendly and start supporting Vulkan.

Tried the beta. Batman: Arkham Asylum and LEGO The Lord of the Rings still refuse to launch. Pity, because those along with Arkham City are really the only Windows-only titles I care about.

What do people think is the better choice to run Windows games now? regular WINE? Staging? Proton?
I think the only definitive answer is "It depends." I suppose "Whatever works" is also acceptable.

As far as I know, you can't play Skyrim using Proton yet. Or am I wrong?
I assure you that you can, and it actually works extremely well.

Some thoughts on Valve’s new Steam Play feature and what it means for Linux gaming
24 Aug 2018 at 3:40 pm UTC

I've tried it with four games so far: Spelunky, Batman: Arkham Asylum Game of the Year, LEGO The Lord of the Rings, and Skyrim.

Spelunky worked flawlessly and ran like a native game, which isn't too surprising.

Skyrim works with a slight loss of performance; also, I can't see when swimming underwater. The most surprising part is that Steam synced my save games from the last time I played nearly 5-years ago! I was able to select "Continue" from the main menu and pick up where I left off. Now the only question is, do I prefer playing on my PC, or on my Switch?

LEGO LotR showed me the first loading screen and then immediately crashed to desktop, and Arkham Asylum didn't start at all.

So it's a good start for Proton, but it seems it has a long way to go. To be fair, it is still in beta, so there's a lot to be done. Right now Proton is closed, and your game will either work, or it won't, and there's nothing you can do. I hope Valve opens it up and lets the user tweak things for themselves (it is Wine, after all) and then maybe implement a system where custom tweaks can be shared with other users.

Too bad they also seem to have a "FCK LINUX" initiative. When is the Linux version of GoG Galaxy supposed to be released again?
