Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia releases for Linux on Thursday, will use Vulkan

I'm still not sure what makes this different than any other Total War game. They all seem to be essentially "re-skins" of previous games, with the possible exception of Total Warhammer which added flying units, heroes, and magic to the mix.

Quoting: tonRWarning: tonR harping about Linux/FOSS mobile devices again!

Well, nuff said. Mobile devices/Smartphone is right here and right now. It's no longer "the future". Apple shows they willing to throw away (not so) "open platform" Mac for (totally) "close platform" iOS. So, it is time for Linux/FOSS community to seriously R&D-ing on mobile devices. If not, our (not so distant) future generations might never know what is meaning of open platform.

And no, Android is NOT our viable future. I don't think "cocktail license" OS should become our future platform.
I've heard it said that the personal computer being an open platform was purely an accident partly because IBM didn't recognize the importance of controlling the software market, and partly because Bill Gates screwed them when he pulled out of OS/2 and released Windows 95 a short time later. Numerous companies have been attempting to "fix" that miscalculation ever since because an open platform is a threat to any company that wants to control their customers' spending habits, which is pretty much every tech company in existence today.

Quoting: JanAs a developer, if you also plan to release on iOS (which is the biggest mobile gaming platform) you have to support Metal anyway.
Pretty sure Android dwarfs iOS in that arena.

At least according to this source, Android sits above 80% of the market while iOS is less than 20%:

Quoting: EhvisA lot (if not most) professional software still uses OpenGL (older compatibility stuff even). Seems like a harsh move to kill that off. I'm sure Laminar Research of X-Plane won't be amused either.
Laminar are big Mac guys -- it's their development platform -- and have been planning to support Metal for a long time, at least since 2015, that is if they haven't added support already. I haven't really kept up with X-Plane news.

Quoting: minkiuThe only software that has no alternative is After Effects, it's not like other software could achieve similar results, it's how damn easy they make it to achieve that result (plus there is a heck ton of plugins).
I don't know if I'd call After Effects "damn easy" (ha ha!), but I understand what you're saying. I'm definitely a lot more familiar with Premier since I use it almost daily on the job.

Quoting: ulysses768What specific Adobe product would you like to see on Linux? Photoshop?
Premiere (Video editing)

For image editing, we already have GIMP & Krita
For video work, Premiere and After Effects are hard to beat. I just hate Adobe's subscription model. I know there are several video editing suites for Linux, such as Cinelerra and kdenlive, but I don't have enough experience with any of them to say if they're a good alternative to Premiere.

It's a good step in the right direction. Now if only we could just get more developers to take advantage of the multi-platform abilities of these engines.

Quoting: Mountain ManIs this a real RPG, or is it just an adventure game with stats?

And by "real RPG", I mean does it have actual choices and consequences that affect individual quests and the overall story? Or does it offer typical JRPG "choices", as in no choice at all?

"Do you want to rescue my uncle?"

>No

"Ha ha! You're a such a joker. Of course you want to rescue him. Let's go!"
...The line between RPG and adventure has always been vague.
Not really. I think Warren Spector put it best: An RPG is any game where you can change if not the outcome of the story then at least the way it is told.

Or as someone from BioWare once said, "Just because you put a 'J' in front of it doesn't make it an RPG."

The only JRPG I can think of off the top of my head that I would classify as a real RPG is ChronoTrigger. It has something like 16 different endings that depend on what decisions you make on your adventure, and in one case, you have the choice of either killing an antagonist, or sparing his life and asking him to join your party.
