Since years ago I'd taken to querying GPU information through the likes of lspci, glxinfo, s-tui and other tools. Though software like GPU-T certainly help to ease the break-in period for folks finding their way from Windows.

It is exactly the same kind of issue we've been fighting in the OS space "Every extra person using [Windows] is only adding to the issue." When people use something, anything, it legitimizes it.
One thing I've learned is that the masses will always make the wrong choice. Large populations of humans do not make decisions that collectively help the best interests of themselves or others.

Every extra person using all these AI tools is only adding to the issue. The more abstraction exists between the problem and those perpetuating it, the less likely you will be able to get the average person to recognize the problem. Less even to understand it.

Quoting: Liam DaweAh, but you've touched on a good point actually. With open source - nothing stops people taking a distro and doing a spin with a patch to remove it all huh? How will they deal with anything like that...By tying it to a 'must have' watering hole, so that people will want it a la Brave New World. Just look at how many swallow in-browser DRM just to pound down a few shows on streaming sites.

Quoting: melkemindThey could also try to sabotage Proton or pull some other shady stuff. While PC gaming continues growing beyond predictions, this is no doubt a move to protect the moat. It is one of the dangers of having normalized translation layers like Proton. Microsoft remains in the position to say 'jump' and any translation tool has no choice but to follow.
