Framework announce the Framework Desktop, Framework Laptop 12 and upgraded Framework Laptop 13

I have the previous AMD Framework 13. I really like it and the company. Glad to see them taking a more official stance on Linux.

I really hope they stay successful. They demonstrate that all the big vendors could make systems that could be a lot more repairable.

Try the new demo and trailer for Rift Riff, a fast and "strategically tight" tower defense game

Love the design. However, by the third level it was pretty unforgiving. I tend to like tower defense (defence) games that increase the difficulty a bit more gradually. Will keep an eye on it.

Appreciate it being linux native.

These are just awful placeholder graphics, imho.
I think the art style is great!

Arch Linux Package Management (ALPM) gets funding from Sovereign Tech Agency
12 Dec 2024 at 12:50 am UTC

Quoting: poiuzIt says it on every page:
Supported by
Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Actions [with German "flag" & emblem]
on the basis of a decision by the German Bundestag
In a tiny graphic at the bottom of the page after scrolling down for 30 meters.

It reminds me of...

“But the plans were on display…”
“On display? I eventually had to go down to the cellar to find them.”
“That’s the display department.”
“With a flashlight.”
“Ah, well, the lights had probably gone.”
“So had the stairs.”
“But look, you found the notice, didn’t you?”
“Yes,” said Arthur, “yes I did. It was on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying ‘Beware of the Leopard.”
I do understand, every country thinks it is the centre of the universe. But some more so than others (the USA is the worst at this).

Quoting: BrokattI had to google it. Apparently it's a german federal tech agency.
Yes, my first question was Sovereign to which country?

It would have been great to have more context:

Even their website avoids saying anything about Germany on most pages. Weird.

itch.io store was taken down by Funko due to "trash AI Powered" phishing report
10 Dec 2024 at 3:20 am UTC

Quoting: hell0It sucks for itch and imo, their registrar is still at fault if itch did indeed reply (should have trigger a human check). But in general "shoot first, check second" is sadly the most efficient way to protect people from scams, phishing and other bad stuff.
Your first statement is true. In the age of algorithmic process, a human still needs to be in the chain of command.

However, the attitude in the second sentence is a problem. Accepting "shoot first" is a great way for people to weaponize any take-down process. Just look at DMCA removals on a lot of platforms.

AI vs AI is not a real solution.

New Steam Controller 2 and VR controller designs got leaked
28 Nov 2024 at 2:59 am UTC Likes: 2

Quoting: melkemindIt's funny that people are assuming it's big. There's no scale, so we really won't know until we can compare it to something. The main thing I missed with the previous steam controller was the D-pad, so I'm happy this thing has one. The D-pad simulation with the right trackpad just didn't do it for me.
I also love the addition of a D-Pad. Also, two thumbsticks.

Good point on the scale. On the other hand (!), if I can shift my hands up and down the controller in a natural way, it might work ok even if it is larger.

Steam Controller 2 is apparently a thing and being 'tooled for a mass production' plus a new VR controller
21 Nov 2024 at 7:38 am UTC

"...it appears Valve may be prepping a Steam Controller 2..."

Yes, Yes, Yes!

"...along with a new controller for their Deckard VR kit..."

Don't care.

Gimme SC2 now.

Fedora KDE gets approval to be upgraded to sit alongside Fedora Workstation
9 Nov 2024 at 5:57 pm UTC

Quoting: pleasereadthemanualThere are quite a lot of them: https://apps.kde.org [External Link]

I don't know which ones Fedora's KDE SIG thinks are core.
Including all of those as core apps would be lunacy. What I was implying was that only a skeleton number of them is required to make a perfectly usable desktop OS.

I have been glad to see a trend that some Linux distros install fewer things by default and leave more choices up to the user.
