The Talos Principle has another stable build with Vulkan improvements, much better than OpenGL

First, I love this game and I think Croteam are amazing.

GTX 1050 Ti (purchased because of solid performance with decent power draw):

Low - VK: 223.5 GL: 110.2
Med - VK: 132.9 GL: 80.1
High - VK: 64.7 GL: 46.4
Ultra - VK: 43.9 GL: 34.9

Personally, I play on settings that aren't much different than Medium since I can't see much change going higher than that. I originally played it using a GTX 750 (non Ti) at roughly medium settings in OpenGL and noticed no problems.

The performance jump from Vulkan is jaw-droppingly amazing. I was worried that Vulkan would be hard to switch on, but I did nothing more difficult than turning it on in the game settings.

Once developers get good at optimizing Vulkan across platforms, this has the possibility of really boosting Linux performance.

It is like Freeman's Mind except Gordon is just saying "oh no!" most of the time.

Hahaha

Narita Boy, an absolutely incredible looking 2D scroller with RPG elements is on Kickstarter

It has that Hyperlight Drifter vibe. I like it.

If they have solid mechanics and an interesting story, I will definitely buy it. I don't pre-buy things though...

Thanks for the reminder. I am really enjoying my switch to Neon!

Wine 2.2 released with even more Shader Model 5 instructions and work towards Direct3D command stream

Quoting: Whitewolfe80He was head of ID when they published Quake 3 on linux I think in a later interview when asked about Linux he said something along lines of we tried it once the market is not there.
Comments made all those years ago are hardly relevant today.
Show me proof that it is not relevant ideally by booting up fallout 4 and skyrim under linux oh wait you cant because Bethesda and ID still have that same mindset.
As I said, Linux will have to stand on its own as a business proposition. If Bethesda doesn't see the market, then that is what it is. Too bad. I still think that Wine has absolutely nothing to do with that decision. Blaming the lack of ports on Wine is sloppy reasoning.

The fact that I have over 300 Linux games in my library tells me that some people see a market.

Quoting: no_information_hereI may be wrong, but I have never heard a dev say "We don't need to port to Linux, those people will just buy it anyway and use Wine."

I think John Carmack said something like that [External Link]
Thanks to Comandante Ñoñardo for the link to the Carmack quote. I stand (partly) corrected.

However, I have always thought of Carmack as a technology guy, not a business guy. It is the business people who will decide whether Linux is worth porting to. People like Carmack can strongly influence that decision, but at the end of the day it is financial. If the linux market is promising enough, people will port games. My argument was that business people are not looking at wine as rendering the linux market potential zero. It has too small an impact for that.

Linux as a business proposition will stand on its own. Unless Wine suddenly become almost flawless in running 90% of all current Windows games, it does not really compete with porting games. To be honest, though, if was suddenly able to do that, I wouldn't mind at all.

Quoting: [email protected]Wine IS one of those reasons.
Do you really think that?

If the number of Linux desktop users is small, and the number of Linux gamers is smaller. What is the number of them who will buy a game just to manually run it on Wine? What if that game is already old and a percentage of us already own it from a bundle or a nostalgia sale?

A few of us do use Wine, but the "extra Windows sales" are minuscule for a developer. I may be wrong, but I have never heard a dev say "We don't need to port to Linux, those people will just buy it anyway and use Wine."

With that logic you should be against OpenMW because it lowers the chance that Bethesda will someday port Morrowind. Look forward, not back.

Gunmetal Arcadia Zero isn't roguelike as far as I know, so maybe try that one instead.
Thanks, that one is on my wishlist!

Fumiko! Possibly one of the weirdest platformers I've ever played was developed on Linux, lots of bugs

Looks interesting. The atmosphere is cool but I still can't get a sense of the game-play. Echoing your comment, one steam review mentioned some very hard platforming at times. Are the controls reasonable to the task?

Edit: I re-read your comment about imprecise controls. Do you think it is something you can get used to, or just a flaw?

Well, I certainly liked his other two games "You have to win the game" and "Super win the game." I will have to pick this up at some point. He has a skill at making adventure/platformers that reward practice and exploration.

I just turn off the CRT simulation, so it doesn't bother me. It is fun for the first 10 minutes, but my nostalgia doesn't include that particular thing.

YHTWTG is free, so everyone should try it!
