Looks like EA might be banning Linux gamers using Wine to play Battlefield V
6 Jan 2020 at 12:52 am UTC

It seems fishy that Battlefield V works fine for many Linux gamers in Wine. My hunch is some sort of cheat was ran inside Wine or cheating behavior (like camping or wall hacks) and they got reported.

It's clear Linux isn't the OS to game on if you are wanting to play Windows-only AAA online multiplayer games. It seems a better solution would be to play these game via PS4 Remote Play with the Chiaki client if you own a Playstation 4 or Steam Remote Play if you own a second computer running Windows. I have both myself but use the latter mostly. Fortnite and Destiny 2 are fun to play and Remote Play over Crossover doesn't have the router lag / latency.

All you need for a headless stream server is a long Ethernet or Crossover cable and an HDMI or VGA dummy display adapter. You'll also want to set up VNC to easily remote into the system outside of Remote Play when needed.

The Origin client still appears to be broken in 5.0-RC4. It says Offline mode after you sign on.

Remote Play Together released out of Beta, big sale now on Steam

I'm surprised Valve is allowing people who don't own to play remotely with friends in Co-op. Only one person needs to own said game?

I'm also surprised that game developers are okay with this as well, since it means a friend can play without owning the game and thus less game revenue?

The sad case of Trine on Mesa and Linux in 2019

Quoting: Hamish
Quoting: eldakingI would say this story is a good example of the benefits we could have from games being FOSS.
I had thought of mentioning this, but I could really turn this topic into an article in and of itself.

The original Unreal Tournament is stuck with a similar issue on Mesa [External Link] that makes the old native build unable to launch. Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is plagued with the wchar bug [External Link] when using modern versions of glibc.

Playing both of these games through WINE is now often easier than doing so natively, due to it being a stable environment. Both modern Windows and Linux are moving targets.

Frozenbyte released some of its source code in the past as part of the Humble Frozenbyte Bundle, although I doubt they are likely to do so again any time soon.
I just tried the old Enemy Territory: Quake Wars demo on an updated Arch and it works fine. Some bad screen tearing though.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider Definitive Edition arrives on Linux on November 5th

I'm in favor of buying this game on Steam for Linux rather than Feral store directly.

IMO, Valve deserves some of my money for funding Proton / Wine development and DXVK and D9VK funding, which have helped keep Linux gaming on the map. Feral gets 70% and Valve gets 30%. Seems fair.

Google have confirmed the Stadia launch date is November 19

If I ever try Stadia or Vortex.gg, I'd only use it to play games that have anti-cheat systems that aren't supported by Proton/Wine. No point if the games run in Wine, unless you want to play on your phone over the Internet or your computer is a toaster.

There is some hope here:

"I can now make IL2CPP Linux builds on Linux with the beta version 2019.3.0b4 of the editor. It don't allow to make Il2CPP Windows builds on Linux but at least I can continue working on Ubuntu. :) – Duolc7 Sep 29 at 20:28"

Chiaki, an open source PlayStation 4 Remote Play client is out and it works on Linux

Pretty sweet.

I've previously used Sony's official PS4 Remote Play app in a Windows guest on VMware on Linux and it worked satisfactory but a native app is a big win too. Looking forward to playing some more Uncharted 4, Lost Legacy and upcoming Last Of Us 2 on my PC.

Steam Play Proton 4.11-6 is out with newer DXVK, support for The Surge 2 and GTA 5 launcher fixes

While the launcher seems to behave better with this Proton version, GTA V still isn't launching for me. It get stuck at the Rockstar logo.

Anyone have any success without using a launcher bypass hack?

Accelerated OpenGL in a virtual machine is advancing with virglrenderer

Very cool. I think this feature is mainly for Chrome OS users running Linux inside a Crostini VM but can be useful for Linux desktop users running Linux VMs. Chromebooks will need big GPU performance upgrades to make vGPU an acceptable experience. The integrated Intel graphics are poor and even worse when emulating a GPU in software and factoring in the overhead.

What I really want to see is DirectX 11 support for Windows guests with a virtual GPU, so that Easy Anti-Cheat protected games can be played on Linux.
