First Steps with OpenVR and the Vive on Linux

Quoting: GuestThe only games playable in VR are:
- flight simulators and space dogfight games
- first person racing games
- stupid minigames where you’re stuck in place

And none of these are of any interest to me.
Wait what? Hardly. There are tons of other game types that works great. It's all about how you implement it. I've been playing both RPG games and multiplayer fps games that have been an absolute blast.

Quoting: bubexelI have HTC vive, and right now i will try run it on my fedora box.

Btw, in just 30 seconds using it you know its the future. I was waiting it for almost all my life, i preordered it and i had to wait few months to arrive to my home. My hype was really high. I was really scared it was going to dissapoint me. It will be immersive? i will see the distance between me and objects... and all that stuff. When i put that on my head i saw my expectations were ridicolous, it's just much more than what you can expect. All who tested my HMD said the same, it's the future. We had 2D and 3D atm, now we have 2D, 3D and VR.
Everyone that I demo my Vive to says basically the same. I'm going to demo it at the office this Friday and I can't wait to see what the people will think about it!

Biggest problem right now are the games, but only a bigger market and time can fix that, hopefully we will see tons of great releases this year!

Quoting: Mountain ManI'm still of the opinion that this whole VR craze is going to be another short-lived novelty like 3D televisions and motion controls (other than the Nintendo Wii) once people realize that it doesn't meaningfully enhance their gaming experience. Professional applications, yes, but entertainment? I don't see it.
Okay so, please stop comparing it to 3D or the Wiimotes - It's nothing like that. Sure VR headsets are lacking in many aspects like resolution, fov and more, but darn it it has to start somewhere and right now the technology is there.

And it do enhance the gaming experience, it's the whole point - to immerse the user even more. Sure not all games works great in VR but those that does do a good job. If you haven't tried it out I would recommend that you find a friend or some place to at least experience it.

Only problem is I already got it. Maybe I should gift it to someone to support Feral.

Quoting: grenadecxI managed to play through the SR2 without any performance problems at all. Buggy cutscenes and some mission gamebreaking bugs however, but that's about it. I'm not surprised that the performance here is terrible however. After playing the port of SR4 on Linux I lost all hope.
That's the thing about the SR2 Windows port. It was originally a XBOX 360 game and it seems like no thought was put into it ever being anything other than a XBOX 360 game when it was originally developed, so Volition used a bunch of tricks to squeeze performance out of it that worked great on that one specific piece of hardware but on other hardware like PS3, the game had problems. On PC, though, it was a complete crapshoot as some of the game's logic was tied to the XBOX 360's processor speed and other nasty hacks used to make the game run great on the 360 worked okay on some machine configurations, so so on others, and utterly horrible on others still. A machine having more horsepower wouldn't necessarily make the game run better, it would make it worse in some cases, because of the way the engine was programmed. It was a mess. Worked just fine on some PCs, not so much on others.
Right. But I played it on PC with a friend. No problems except those I mentioned, we were probably lucky.

Valve shoots down Itch stores attempt to get their client on Steam
12 Apr 2016 at 7:59 pm UTC

Quoting: PublicNuisanceI don't really care myself because i'd stick with the DRM free Itch store over Steam anyway but I find ut funny that Valve quashed this considering all of the low quality crapware they allow through. I get it from a business standpoint but it makes them look like petty fools when digital homicide can get their games on Steam but Itch can't get their store on Steam.
Do itch require client to download the games?

Nvm, someone already answered that.

This Heroes of Newerth benchmark video shows SteamOS as the clear winner

Quoting: coesetaIn Serious Sam 3 on Linux you will be always the first one on the server, at least in coop that was the case. So it seems to have quicker loading times :)
I could never enjoy SS3 due to poor performance even on a highend nvidia card. Not sure why, it had decent fps but there was lot of juddering during gameplay.

I've been playing HoN since the closed beta, which was back around 2009 and the Linux performance have been up and down but overall pretty good. At least for Nvidia users (I don't own an AMD card so can't tell).

However, I'm not sure how much I trust these benchmarks. I've been running this game in both Linux and Windows (and I still am) and it feels like I always have slightly better performance in Windows 10, especially when I look at the fps. To be fair, I don't run SteamOS, but I really doubt that the difference is huge when running on the same driver. I guess I'll just have benchmark this myself to find out.
