Quoting: HamishYou are mistaken, at least when it comes to the source code releases.
I stand corrected. Thank you. Here's hoping that more developers follow his lead.

Quoting: HamishI was worried that when Carmack left id companies would just stop releasing source code, but within the past year we have had the Serious Sam and Postal code releases, and now we actually have Wolfire going further by releasing their legacy game assets. Onward and upwards.
If I'm not mistaken, Carmack had little to do with ID's open-source or linux support. I believe there was a couple of other people who pushed for it.

Quoting: OLucasZanellaWhy does it seem like sometimes developers don't really know about developing?
Welcome to modern game development, push button, get game.
To be fair, most developers don't care about Linux, so it doesn't matter if it gets done or not.

Happy New Year from GamingOnLinux

No rum, but I did chug a quart of chocolate milk after work. Here's to another year of big releases, and great posts.

I do hope Roccat steps up here. I would absolutely love to see not only support, but also their full software products on Linux. They have some really awesome and innovative stuff. It would be nice to have a hardware company that actually supports us.

Quoting: throghThere are hundreds of videos about Minecraft, where are the ones about Minetest for example?
Minetest is just that. It has no actual content or point. Don't get me wrong, I like Minetest. The performance compared to Minecraft is unbelievable. Open-source games in general are awesome. But let's face it, very few artist like the concept and most programmers have little artistic skill. So you end up with games that run well, but look terrible, or just have no depth. Frogatto is a fantastic exception, and there are a few others, but much like indie games can't compare to real triple-a games in sheer scale and polish, most completely open games are little more than working prototypes.

Worth buying for the soundtracks alone. I enjoy listening to them while playing other games. The first one is even on Spotify.

As for gameplay, you will need both hands, and reassign the controlls to the home row keys, which is about as good as it gets.

Using a mouse is certainly feasable. I even managed (poorly) with a Steam Controller. Still trying to figure out how to get that working well. Wish me luck.

Very fun game. Manages to do more with 4 buttons than you might think. Duck under a flung blade, grab it, throw it back. Kick a rocket into an oncoming enemy. Backflip over a chainsaw wielding wolf, grab his hard hat, fling it at him as he runs back, grab his chainsaw out of the air, unleash your piggy fury. It's fighting distilled to it's most basic and potent form. With a pig.
