Happy Birthday, GamingOnLinux - 16 years today

Happy birthday!

It's all hand-crafted spelling errors and terrible grammar here.
Lately, I keep finding myself cherishing all small human mistakes I find. Like enjoying how a vinilo slightly dirties the sound

In any case, keep up the good work and all those handcrafted small errors!

Slimbook reveal the upgraded Slimbook Fedora 2 with 14" and 16" models

I live in Spain and I really really want to like Slimbook laptops. But why, oh why, do they keep shipping laptops without AMD GPUs? I think it is really clear that among the linux crowd AMD is the preferred option by a wide margin.

Quoting: fenglengshunHm... and the NVK isn't a kernel driver? I think it's in Mesa, so does that mean it's the userspace driver? Sorry, really don't know about the details - all I've been hearing is about how NVK is supposed to be a replacement for Nouveau.
nvk is a Vulkan implementation that uses the kernel driver, so no, it's not a kernel driver itself. So it's either nvk + nouveau or nvk + nova.
Or NVK + Zink, which at this point seems the efficient solution. I do not know, I cannot bring myself to be interested in this project

Time to blow the dust off your VR headset - Metro Awakening is coming

I joke – a little, there hasn't been all that many truly great PC VR releases that I've seen recently. I still feel completely spoiled by how exceptionally good Half-Life: Alyx was to play through. Still probably my top 5 gaming experiences ever.
I read similar things in a gaming magazine: Alyx might have been so good that it actually was hurting VR.
Besides being a GREAT game all around, the last two chapters of Alyx are the most exhilarating experiences I have had in videogames. The vast majority of other VR games are divided into promising cool experiments (but experiments nevertheless) and lengthy cash-grabs, there are a handful of other titles which are nice but they are not even close to be in the same level of Alyx.

Damm I want to play Alyx again but I'm afraid it won't be as good as I remember :dizzy:

What is out of what tree?
Out of Godot main repo. In this context it kinda means without official support. If not for Nintendo's license, this could be a pull request to the Godot main project so it would be maintained by Godot maintainers

SteamVR 2.0 Beta continues improving on Linux

Quoting: MohandevirI'm wondering if it's not the biggest missing link for the SteamOS 3.5 release and the Sephiroth official reveal. **Fingers crossed**
I think if it was for Deckard then it would have a much higher priority than it has seen. I imagine how it's being rendered is different, especially since from the previous leaks we saw it would have a standalone mode.
I dunno, linuz VR had been pretty much abandoned for years and suddenly there are lots of improvements being rolled out continuously very fast. I, for one, am very excited for what this could mean ^^

Blender enables Vulkan as an experimental option

Quoting: BlackBloodRumI never did get why Apple decided to ignore Vulkan and keep only Metal.

I understand technically, Metal came first, but they could have added Vulkan later on. I mean, I like heavy metal as much as the next guy, but I can't help but feel they kind of shot themselves in the foot with that one.

But then, we're talking about Apple here, who intentionally killed the majority of MacOS native Steam games on their OS (they won't run on the latest OSX due to Apple's changes).
I think the result of MacOS gaming being thrown under the bus due to metal is just collateral damage of their strategy with iOS. Most mobile devs develop for iOS and then they port to Android, best case scenario both versions are developed in parallel. Metal is just putting sticks in the wheel to that situation,

With iOS they have the majority of the (paying) users, with MacOS they have a niche audience and it seems they do not mind being mistreated.

Valve fix up more SteamVR 2.0 Beta issues

Is it me seeing things or Valve is lately focusing more on Linux VR bugfixing?

On VR we have been left drifting alone for so long I wonder what all of this means ^^. Could it mean something is coming? :D

Robot Gentleman dev of 60 Seconds! blasts Unity, switches to Godot and increases funding

Quoting: Purple Library GuyI'm actually starting to feel sorry for some other open source projects that don't have as much name recognition and momentum as Godot. Everyone's reacting by supporting Godot (and in Terraria's case, FNA, which is cool) but Liam had an article listing quite a few other alternatives, some of which are both open source and seem pretty neat, and I hope some of those get a bit of love too.
What we, FOSS enthusiast, see as options, competition and customization others see as fragmentation. And there is a point there, many of these companies are switching out of necessity and they need these tools to keep working so it makes sense for them to focus resources in the next thing best established, with more features and biggest community.

I am sure all other engines will (somewhat) benefit from this too but I think this is mainly Godot's opportunity for big growth. I, for one, am rooting for them

Latest trailer for Crowsworn has me desperately wanting this Hollow Knight-like

Quoting: EhvisDon't agree with the reasoning that a game should be 10 times bigger and better because of the backing numbers. That sort of creep never works out well.

Game looks cool though. And if you're going to copy (eh, let yourself be inspired by) something, taking Hollow Knight is a good choice. And I see some Ori in there as well. If it stick with the native build I will definitely give it a good try. I wonder how the difficulty will feel though. I managed to get to the end credits in Hollow Knight. But getting to the "full end" proved to be a harsh punishment and I might be running up against my own limitations.
Dunno, "being inspired by" HK is a double edge blade: it's a great place to start but the mark you are going to measure against is really high.

Actually, though I really like metroidvanias I've been having problems loving titles like Ori, blasphemous or ENDER LILLIES because I was feeling like "yeah, they're alright but they have some issues". While I'm sure if have loved them if wouldn't played HK.
