Mmm, I was wondering.. Step 2 is just placing a certain file in a certain dir so, couldn't proton take care of that? (And actually you could control which dir is it by changing the environment variable LD_LIBRARY_PATH) It would remove step 2 and 3 which are the most annoying I think.
Amazon hiring for Proton / Wine and Linux developers for streaming service Luna

My point is graphical performance is growing faster than game graphical requirements to the point of having a laptop SoC capaple of running every non-VR game through an emulation layer at 720p (Of course, I am taking of the Steam Deck). So, right now it would be arguable the need of a streaming service hardware-wise (even less in the near feature). And given steam prices I think it is actually cheaper to buy the games than to pay a monthly fee even if you have access to all games (which you don't). With almost all of videogames with 10+h of content, (a lot with 30h and a lot of replayability) you are not going to play a lot of them per month as you would with movies on Netflix.
But you could say:
1) I want VR!: well, the smallest lag in VR can make you throw up so I do not think streaming solutions are there yet.
2) I want to play 4k!: That's what FSR and DLSS are for. It makes more sense to use these technologies than to spend hundreds of euros in a beefed up graphic card when your old laptop can manage almost the same quality with the same performance.
I have been thinking about this for a time now and I wanted to share to see what you people hought about it.
TL;DR: At this rate in the near future every laptop will be able to play any game and upscale it to any desired resolution so the biggest boon for streaming services would be irrelevant. Also, steam is cheap. Any thoughts?

Quoting: mphuZIs it the future though? Some years ago I would have agreed but now I am not so sure.Quoting: Liam DaweI made a prediction / hope on a Valve streaming service back in 2018.Sure. After all, streaming is the future.
New players like Google and Amazon have already entered here. Microsoft is also pulling up.
If Valve doesn't launch its streaming service in the next year or two, they may lose everything. And no Linux will save them. That's why I'm a little scared for Valve. I hope Gabe and Co know what they are doing and will not miss the moment.

Quoting: TangoBakerUntil You Fall doesn't seem to work with Proton anymore.I loved Until You Fall till it stop working. At some point a proton experimental version claimed it solve the problem but then the black screen issue appeared. People in ProtonDB said they got it working with the "black-screen-fix" but I never understood what that meant.. until yesterday! Apparently there are a few beta channels available for that game, one of them is "black-screen-fix"; I opted-in and the game works again (using proton experimental, I haven't tried other versions)! yuuuhuuu
It did before release, didn't after, then worked if you used experimental and now doesn't. Not sure what broke it the last time but I haven't been able to get it to work again even with old versions of Proton.

Quoting: scaineWell, the devs don't seem to care about their game on Proton, judging by this lack of interaction:Well, the description of the beta channel is:

I fricking love it: Linux has better dx12 support than windows 7 (which doesn't at all). I know win7 is no longer supported but it is still used by 15% of win users!
The other day, one of my windows friends was saying he would have to update to win10 to play REVIII. I had to repress myself from shouting triumphantly "OR TO UPGRADE TO LINUX, THE GAME WORKS THERE TOO! HUH!?" but sadly the game only had initial support at that point :( Now I may have another chance :D
My point is we've come a long way

Open source OpenXR (VR/AR) runtime 'Monado', now passes conformance tests

SteamVR is also very close to be OpenXR-conformant meaning (I guess) we will be able to run steam games with Monado.
I would love to see benchmarks between Monado and SteamVR. It is specially strange since Collabora and Valve seem to be close partners but now they are going to be competing for the linux VR runtime. I wonder if Valve is also having a hand in Monado for some reason. I am very intrigued by this project. ^^

In February I assisted to the GodotCon in Brussels. At some point I was having a conversation with Juan Linietsky (Godot main developer and creator) and I thanked him personally for having such an amazing support for Linux. He told me he uses Linux in his computers, he develops the engine in Linux and he tests it on Linux.
So it is not like Linux is a first class citizen, Godot is being developed IN Linux, FOR Linux. And then it also works very well in Windows.
Very nice to here that from a project that is called to be one of the major player in game development.

Just a quick math fun fact:
There are around 7000M people in the world, therefore with ~20M it means more or less the 0.3% of the world population is connected at the same time in Steam.
Wow

Steam Controller On Ubuntu, A Tweak You Need To Do

I got mine a few hours ago. The controller feels great though I agree with the Ars Technica article when they say the face buttons are an afterthought, they are small and awkwardly place. I am running fedora 22 and with the controller I am able to emulate mouse on the system, I never thought web browsing with a controller would that comfortable.
I was loving the controller till I run into some issues: apparently my steam controller cannot load gamepad profiles (keyboard+mouse profiles work just fin) so I cannot play any game which requires a gamepad (ahh, bitter irony :P ). Searching around it looks like I am not the only one with this issue and it happens in all platforms. Have you guys experienced something similar? Do you know of any workaround?
I am running Steam beta client and I sent a bug report about this (they ask me nicely to troubleshoot for them :) )
