KDE developer suggests Plasma needs to be simpler by default
4 Dec 2021 at 4:55 am UTC Likes: 1

What are my thoughts?

Sane defaults are critical for a desktop environment that holds your hand and doesn't give you much choice (MacOS). The product would fail otherwise.

Sane defaults are wonderful but not critical for a desktop with a wealth of customization options, like Plasma for example. But they sure would be welcome.

And hey, you can never win them all. "Sane" defaults will always annoy somebody, so DO NOT go the way of Windows 10 and try to hide all the computer settings behind walls. You could be a power user in Windows 7 but then they treated you like an ignorant bafoon in Windows 10. So if Plasma wants to take more time thinking about user experience and presetting the most popular options, cool. Just don't make it any more difficult to find those settings.

Ubisoft suggest posting on their forum for Proton support in Rainbow Six Siege

I don't buy Ubisoft games on PC, and it has nothing to do with Linux. I started that practice many years ago on Windows. Their multiplayer technical problems on PC sucks and has wasted too much time and money from my friends. So, I only buy single-player Ubisoft games on PC, or I buy them on Playstation.

It would be cool if Siege worked on Linux for those that wanted to play it, but I would not be one of the people buying it (already own the PS4 version). If someone wants to play a good shooter now that is sort of tactical, Insurgency: Sandstorm is an excellent game!

Caves & Cliffs: Part II has arrived for Minecraft

Oh yeah, I'm definitely excited. I haven't had this much desire to play Minecraft in years. The kids play all the time and I've played with them a bit. The new world generation is the strongest thing to pull me in. The variety of biomes and mountainous areas looks WAY better than it used to. They took some tips from Minetest mountains I think. I generated a new world and it's just a lot more interesting to walk around in. There is a lot of stuff everywhere. I also really appreciate the easier crafting system. It's probably been this way a long time, but like I said, I haven't wanted to play for a while. Used to be that you'd have to look up the recipe for everything you needed to figure out.

In case anyone is wondering, you can host a Minecraft world on an Odroid C4 no problem. What? No one was wondering? :)

More BattlEye titles for Proton on Linux including DayZ, ARMA 3 now supported

Great news about ARMA 3!

Also applicable to me is Final Fantasy XIV. It works with Glorious Eggroll, but I'd rather keep to standard release stuff when possible.

GOG to go through some reorganization after suffering losses

Quoting: kaimanI find it rather difficult to rack up such a loss from selling digital goods....

Could this pertain to GOG Galaxy and the associated backend functionality for achievements, cloud-saves and such? Though even that doesn't look like something you could sink $2m and likely more, assuming the actual selling of games is profitable.
$2M is about 10 developers for one year when you think about industry salaries, benefits, equipment, training, etc.

My own feelings about this news have pretty much all been represented by others:
- I like GOG but am held back from liking it more because Linux users are given minimal support, like that cousin you don't like but your mom makes you buy them a gift every year anyway, so you get them the cheapest thing you can find.
- I don't have to run my own cloud server to share game saves with Steam.
- Proton games are often click-to-play, whereas the GOG version requires me to fiddle with minigalaxy + Lutris so I can install the game easily and then actually run it

So yeah, Linux native games that are either single-player or LAN multiplayer are the only thing you should buy on GOG to have a convenient experience.

I have a couple gripes for Steam as well, but I am not going to write out a complete comparison.

KDE developer thinks they will become the 'Windows or Android' of the FOSS world

If one DE becomes pretty popular and kinda the default choice, doesn't mean other good DE's have to go away. So yeah, let's have a star front-runner.

Take down the enemy capital ship in Deep Space Battle Sim out now

8-16 players on each side... what you're saying is someone needs to run some dedicated servers with free, public access and then pay a Twitch streamer to rally their followers to play this game on stream. Seems like the developer needs to hire out some marketing help if he doesn't want to take care of those kind of things. The game sounds cool, but if it requires that many players and there are none, then my couple friends would not be enough to form a team.

Kinda stinks that only 10% of the donations goes to the prize pool. Looking forward to what comes out of this.
