Quoting: t3gIt’s cute that WINE is at 5.18, but Proton is stuck at 5.9 since WINE broke esync/fsync and Proton likes to have it.
Any news on that front?
There was a recent release of Proton-5.9-GE-6-ST [External Link] that has backported fixes and newer libraries from 5.17 into the Proton 5.9 code. I think they are going to continue to try to add the game fixes and keep up with the WINE patches while Proton is remaining stagnant.

Its a good thing we have Proton-GE as it provides another option to standard Proton to get newer games to work.

I wonder what version of WINE the Proton team will use next, considering the latest version is based on 5.9

Quoting: gardotd426So this sounds like it's only possible for native games, too bad.
It's not bad. The main goal is to switch to native games. Proton is only a temporary workaround.
I've been gaming on Linux since 2014 and unfortunately Proton is the future of gaming on the platform. We are seeing fewer native releases and the ones we do have run better in Proton. They run better because the native port is not updated, while Wine/Proton is constantly moving forward and fixing issues.

Off the top of my head, Dying Light, Life is Strange, and Metro 2033 now run better in Proton vs their native versions.

I love GOG, but I wish they had Galaxy for Linux so I could track achievements and have cloud saves.

If not, at least open up the API so 3rd party software like GameHub and minigalaxy can link in to those features. Using this method, they would get an authorized key to contact the API.

xoreos, the FLOSS game engine for titles like Knights of the Old Republic has a new update

There's also revan [External Link], which is the 3rd KOTOR game engine I've come across in the past 2 days alone!

FLOSS is great and all when people can be creative, but maybe they should put their efforts together instead of having multiple projects doing the same thing.

This is more of a Proton thing, but I’ve had a blast with Titanfall 2 after getting for $10.

Quoting: BeamboomI really wish GloriousEggroll would join forces with the Valve efforts instead of operating on the side.
I don't think it's possible. GE uses some not-so-legal tweaks and Windows files, Valve moderators on GitHub even remove every mention of GE from Proton issues.
Quoting: BeamboomI try avoiding to do more "custom modifications" to my system than absolutely necessary.
Proton-GE doesn't affect the OS, it's just one folder Steam uses to create another folder with a game's wineprefix. Delete it, and it's gone. I also use Boxtron for playing DOS games on Steam, quite handy.
You are correct in Valve deleting any mention to custom Proton builds. Found that out here when I asked if the person tried the GE-MF version and it was deleted immediately: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/4031#issuecomment-652721381 [External Link]
