Why Linux games often perform worse than on Windows

Could not agree more on Luke Nukem, we desperately need the porters, they are the ones that will make Linux recognized as a serious market in the future.
And as long as the port runs fine and I have a good experience, I am fine with it. Ok my system is quite strong (Xeon E3 1231, GTX 970, 16GB RAM) so long everything runs at max setting in FullHD. And that is what counts for me.
But the day will come when developers will start using a dev workflow tailored
to multi platform. And some companies already do multi platform development (I look at you Obsidian)
And a small annotation on the OpenGL part: OpenGL is fine if used correctly. Most of the devs just have a lot less experience with OpenGL compared to DX. Take ID Software, they made Doom with OpenGL 4.5 on Windows, and it runs with >100FPS with max settings on my machine, and it looks superb. And yes, OpenGL 4.5 can do multi threading, already programmed with it myself. But the issue with porting a DX11 multi threading engine to OpenGL remains, this will give a shitload of problems.

Beefsack, you deserve a cookie too for being such a noble hearted man! Next time we should make a fundraiser and ship them a shit-ton of cookies :D
And all praise to Feral and Aspyr, just bought Shadow of Mordor yesterday (still downloading this huge thing with my crappy countryside DSL :D ) and working through Tomb Raider at the moment. Can't wait for Mad Max! And please give as Shadow Warrior 2!

Using Nvidia's NVENC with OBS Studio makes Linux game recording really great

Ah cool, thanks for the guide, was just setting up OBS on my Ubuntu machine to start streaming, and really wondered why I can't use gpu encoder in OBS like on Windows. Thanks Liam!
Now there is only one question left, does anyone know of a software tool which let's me configure the zoom of my webcam? Because my facecam captures a lot of my room and my face is to small. On windows I can just zoom in the capture settings of OBS, on Linux this option is missing, and Video4Linux2 doesn't have a zoom option. Some advice would be cool

Puh, my system reaches recommended (Xeon E3 1231v3 roughly equivalent to a i7 4670, GTX 970, 16GB RAM), so I am set for this game. Just waiting for a sale, but that's ok, I'll have to finish Tomb Raider and Shadow Warrior first ;)

Ah damn, didn't see that coming, I was just refunded for this game, as it sucked balls in it's current state. Well, I will wait for a sale price then ;)

Wanted to post the same as wolfyrion, as the shitstorm over Gearbox was real :D
I own Megaton Edition on Steam, and Atomic Edition on GOG, so I am a lucky guy for now. I also bought the Anniversary Edition, as I really want to play the new levels, but I have my issues with this edition of the game. The normal game sound is already bad quality, but I assume the even dumbed that down. When compared to my native eduke32 version, where you can use a 44kHz sample rate for audio (the original in 1996 had 22kHz), the Anniversary Edition has worse sound than in 1996. Except for the "Duke Talk" which has been rerecorded with the original voice actor, but it feels so out of place. There is an option to resort to legacy Duke Talk, which sounds much better in my opinion. The also changed the Next Weapon/Previous Weapon system to be much slower then in the original, which is completely fucked up if you know the original. Things like freezing enemies from far away an finish them with a pistol shot and switching back is not possible with this. And my biggest issue, they changed the maps, e.g. E1L6 "The Abyss", has now one more secret area than in the original. And some of the sprites changed their appearance, for example the iconic six-pack aka big medikit. Oh, and it is not possible to bind mouse button 4 on onward, only left, right and middle. Come on Gearbox, when a hobby project like eduke gets this right, you certainly can also.
If I was not over the two hour mark for refund, this would be the first game ever I refunded, and this as a hardcore Duke Nukem fan. I am really disappointed by Gearbox.
P.S. And for those who asked, yes if you download Megation or Atomic Edition from GOG or Steam, you can copy out the game files (you only need the DUKE3D.grp) and play it with a source port like eduke32.

Tomb Raider for Linux is currently super cheap on the Feral store

I already bought it in the last Steam summer sale for like dirt cheap. I still haven't completed it yet (something around 40%) but so far I have no issues, it runs great on my machine (xeon e3 1241 + gtx 970 with 357 prop driver), and the game itself is rock solid, fun and entertaining.

Thanks for the great article Liam, some really great info in it. And I can also only encourage all other Linux gamers out there, buy from creditable sources, and always directly from the developer if possible/feasible. Steam and GoG are also good options. I never did buy from any other source, because it is the internet. Most of it is shady or illegal. ;)
And as someone here already pointed out, voicing your opinion and contacting the developer and wanting a Linux port, is as equally important as making a valid Linux buy. Raise your voice for Linux, tweet them, email them, make them feel that Linux is important for Gaming! Sales figures are one thing, but a personal impression on one of the developers can make up for a lot. Marketing 1x1! ;)
On a final note, moral bashing should not be part of such an article, although I somewhat agree with Liam on this topic, it was just misplaced in my opinion. Making clear that G2A and consorts are shady dealers is alright and very well placed.
And a final final note to all people who defend shady deals because you are poor, turn your situation around and start making your own games. Hell, we are on Linux and have some of the best dev-tools right at our hands (or package manager). Get a FOSS game engine, and start making a game. Or get yourself GCC and start learning C++ by programming your own games. It is no rocket science or witchcraft. As a passionate (and professional) software developer I can only encourage everyone who is eager to try it for themselves. It is tons of fun and entertaining to craft your own software, even if you are only making your own little text adventure (which I once did, it was still the best game I made myself to date ;) )!
